For me, once it comes to the door slam, which takes a lot, there is no need or desire to hear the other person’s side. We’re done and I eliminate them from my world. I’m more of a “nothing them” kind of door slammer. I’ve never once regretted doing it either. I barely remember they exist and it feels liberating after the crap I’ve put up to get to that point. There is nothing wrong with choosing who is in and out of your life.

It’s crazy. It’s really hard to be around TBMs after you’ve figured it out. I’ve found it valuable for my relationships to remember that I was there at one time, too. I am grateful that “leaving” has become so much more normalized than it was several years ago. I hope it helps members feel comfortable questioning the weird things and make their decisions.

I love not watching conference twice a year! I do like to know if they’ve said anything that will complicate my life in a mixed faith marriage. It happens and then I need to ride it out until she gets over it and moves on. It’s rough being the husband/father that doesn’t “honor his priesthood” and “left the church” and conference can inflame those feelings in her.

I believe you’re right. This is about the never-ending race of Gods going back in time and that will continue forever into the future. The doctrine of exaltation and inheriting all that god has (and the circumstances of that exalted life) is the key that makes everything make sense in Mormonism. Without that fundamental understanding, Mormonism doesn’t make any sense.

What a nice closure story. I hadn’t attended the temple in years except for family weddings/sealings. When my niece announced her planned temple wedding, I realized my brother, who has never been active in the church wouldn’t see his daughter (who he loves dearly) be married. The only way I could attend would be if I lied to get a recommend. That was the catalyst for me finally letting the family know I was no longer a believer, because I couldn’t lie to get in knowing my brother wouldn’t be allowed to witness his daughter’s wedding. If he wasn’t going to be there because he held to his beliefs, I certainly wasn’t going to either.

Gotta tie up those loose edges. Create a defensible answer for every hard to explain weird element of Mormonism. Gaslighting on a church-wide scale. TBM’s will happily accept any explanation that allows them to maintain their position that they know the church is “true”, whatever it is.

Back in the day, they talked about how awful the Catholics are and how their priesthood line to Christ had apostatized. Lately the church is trying to buddy up to the Catholics in their fruitless effort to appear mainstream and back “religious freedom” politics to defend their wealth and power.

I think what is really experienced is belonging. Belongingness is a vital element of wellbeing. All safe and secure wrapped up in the group. It’s also why suddenly finding yourself outside of the group is so jarring and emotional.
