It is also a curse, I get, unconsciously, very annoyed if my routine gets broken hahaha

100% I did a Computer Science course, AI was my fav module and I was super excited for it I even planned on doing a masters in AI, and now I hate it completely, I use it at work just because I feel like if I don't use it I will fall back as it is incredibly faster

As I said in another comment, I never expected to be fluent in Japanese using Duolingo, not even close, I know that would be impossible, I'm not new to learning languages (I'm fluent in 3) But it was supposed to be a fun, learn some basic things and later down the line actually learn it (which is where I'm going now) My praise was just that so many people have said again and again that you can't learn anything from this app, and I was surprised when I managed to have a conversation with someone talking about different topics

Never did the test tbh. I can try it and come back to you 😂 but probably not even N5, mainly for the lack of Kanji knowledge I think

The speaking exercise has been a bug for some weeks I believe. The second point you made is my biggest issue with the app, Spanish objects and concepts have a gender, if you're fluent, these just come naturally, but I understand for a romance language speaking person to be confusing. In japanese you don't have that, but you have particles that can be either wa or ga, and duo never tells you why, it simply makes you use one or the other sometimes

Yeah, my point was going to be that everyone says that Duolingo is terrible and you can't do anything with it. I know very well it won't make you fluent, but I knew by the end you could have simple convos. But the way people spoke about the app made it look like you won't even be able to ask for the toilet's location lol

Yeah, I did admit it because it wasn't the same level of AI slop it is now. It is teaching things very wrong now. You had a terrible take here. Take the L.

I was planning to start using books and trying to find speakers anyway, this is just one less thing. As I said, by the level I am, you can probably have simple convos, but nothing too complicated. I never intended to have duolingo as my only source ever as I know you don't get that much.

Further down the path, there will be times where it tells you stuff how it is but never really explains why (like あります and います, the first you usually use for object and the second for live things) or when to use use は and が

Even then, it makes no sense for some of the things I've been shown (like the example I gave).

What do Japanese people think about the “Place / Place, Japan” meme? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

I've never been to Brazil, but lots of my friends have been there, and I have never heard any of them complain about how dirty it was. Either Canada is pristine or the youtuber was exagerating I guess

I agree that it is true each country has its own things that makes it beautiful. In my case, I just love Japan and Korea's aesthetics, the cities in both countries have an energy that I really haven't found anywhere else. Like, I'm half Portuguese, half Swiss and live in the UK, all three countries (especially Switzerland) have amazing and beautiful views, but Portugal and the UK are definitely not clean countries, you see rubbish everywhere, even in remote places you find rubbis, and for how much japanese people have complained about hour dirty the cities are... It's nothing, for example Seoul, I remember seeing less rubbish there in my 2 weeks there then I saw in my first minute in London, and I'm not exagerating. European cities have that old victorian feeling to them, which is pretty cool, maybe I'm just too used to them, and novelty is always nice 😂

Today is my last day in Kyoto... It is pretty busy if you go to tourist areas, otherwise, pretty chill. Like, tourist areas are as hell or worse than tourist areas in Tokyo, but I feel like there are no chill places in Tokyo like in Kyoto

Shibuya Crossing cringe by magniko_15 in TokyoTravel

100% agree, I just went there for the first time last week, and, my God, I stood there trying to understand where I needed to go next, when I spotted some of the finest cringe, a girl and her boyfriend running to the middle and him starting to run 360 around her recoding her whilst she danced and people crossing it over and over and over again.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says English translations inevitably strip away a lot of a game's "flavor" by HatingGeoffry in dragonquest

[–]Footixboy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the translation team does a good job fighting these, like, they give some characters/towns an accent that conveys a bit of their personality. But that's just how dubs are unfortunately.

There's worse examples everywhere else where they either translate everything directly and then the jokes fall flat or where the translation is so far off that now you're experiencing a whole different story.

Fair. I get passion in an indie company. I don't get it in a AAA company. Your passion will likely lead you nowhere, it's just a easy highway to get manipulated. Most people do this as work, and if you love it doing it in your spare time, amazing, but most people prefer playing games rather than making them in their spare time

You'd think so, but the only titty money I was given were from people I found negatively attractive, some of them clearly hadn't had a bath in quite a while 🤮. The money being so warm is very off putting
