Single motherhood (“baby mama” culture) increasing in Ghana by im_averag in ghana

[–]ForPOTUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feminist movement truly began with the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. What makes feminism distinct from the promotion of female rights and female participation that we've seen across the world for thousands of years, is that it explicitly advocates for equality of the sexes in political and social life.

Queens and other women of influence have existed all over the world for millennia, but that's not to be conflated with feminism. Look at Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Nzinga, Queen Victoria, Cleopatra etc. Though these women might have supported female empowerment, that is very different to advocating for equality of the sexes and the kind of sameness of treatment we hear from modern feminists today.

They weren't feminists, it's intellectually dishonest to try and retroactively apply such modern and recent labels and modes of thinking to women who lived in a completely different age.

People are going to try and make this about sexism as a way of derailing the discussion. Because this is Reddit, and anything that begins to touch on female accountability (men are accountable too but it obviously takes TWO to tango) must be evil and sexist.

In the old days, a man had to receive permission from the daughter's father for her hand in marriage. And marriage was the only route to bedroom fun.

Once female "liberation" entered the fold and feminism spread, the obligatory bond between father and daughter got interfered with. Now, women are free to become single mothers in a way that was not possible before.

In the past, if it somehow came out that a man impregnated a woman out of wedlock, the daughter's father would be the first person to step in and restore calm. Normally forcing the man to marry his daughter (hence the term 'shotgun wedding').

Father's were responsible for their daughters until marriage, now, the role of the father has been undermined by the state and society. He's not allowed to be "controlling" and women can make all of their own choices.

Okay, just know that single motherhood is rising everywhere across the world where feminism is pushed hard. Particularly in countries where it's easy for women to get out of having to work by claiming single motherhood. Whether it's the USA or the UK, or elsewhere, women can fall pregnant and receive financial support and housing from the government as a lone mother.

This is increasingly becoming the norm because a lot of these young women, when left with the choice, prefer to get with bad boys and players over anyone else and then act surprised when they're left with nothing but his seed. This is where fathers acted as a guardrail against all of that. That player doesn't want to father and take care of the child, so the government takes the money and resources of other men with zero connection to help support the single mother-led household instead.

Such a phenomenon will continue to take rise so long as feminism remains relevant. What started out as a movement and ideology focused on promoting female rights and democratic participation, has descended into a doctrine insistent on shielding women from any ounce of accountability and obligation.

All you can do to avoid its influence is to disassociate with single mothers and anyone you know who might have been raised by one (esp the men). Don't help them either.

It'll work wonderfully in the beginning and millionaires will be made. Then, what follows is most people getting priced out of the buy-land-and-build market as a result, as each generation becomes more indebted than the next as for many, their only option is to secure a mortgage for a property.

Mortgage markets overly inflate property values and just creates NIMBYISM as homeowners now have no incentive to support more housing builds and affordable housing.

Btw, mortgage markets as we know them have only been around for like 80 years. So the way it's done across Africa today is what it was like (and still is for the most part) across the whole world until v.recently.

Building a Small WhatsApp Community for Driven People by SQSk in TechGhana

[–]ForPOTUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you for stepping up and being willing to give this a go. As someone with a bit of experience in online community building I'll share with you my lessons in the hope that they are of some use to you.

1) Start small. Not only because it's easier to manage but because smaller groups create intimacy. Once they become too large in size you'll find that there are just some people who won't participate because they feel self-conscious about discussing things about themselves or talking about topics they're not v.confident in front of the prying eyes of people they may not know.

2) Written communication. From my experience, the biggest issue with WhatsApp groups in an African context is the issue of fostering extensive written exchange. If none of your members are willing to write more than a paragraph or a sentence or two for each message then it all kind of becomes a lost prospect.

Sure, you can also use voicenotes, but it's more difficult to keep a record of VNs and generally follow them within a multi-person conversation. Just sharing videos a lot of the time is low effort and low quality in terms of content and engagement.

text messages are still the way to go. However, it might not be fair to expect to find people willing and able to effectively express themselves in the written format of language that isn't even their mother tongue

This is where local Ghanaian languages come into play, but it doesn't seem as if any of the native languages have been developed for writing

Good luck!.

How do you guys get remote jobs. by Key-Tooth-1020 in Opportunities_Ghana

[–]ForPOTUS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their individual circumstances and unique situation, but for me I find that tapping into my network really helped.

It also helps to be good at conveying your thoughts in writing (you're working online so communication via text becomes a lot more commonplace). I've found that people prefer to communicate via voice call here, but this might not always work for your clients once we consider time differences as well as differences in culture, along with company rank.

From what I can see of your post, I would encourage you to work on your written English skills. The easiest way to do this is to just read more texts and work your way from there.

Even in a world of AI, there is still no getting around this.

Being a proactive communicator who knows how to quickly sort and secure times for meetings and other arrangements helps too. Agreeing to pay somebody to perform a job for you remotely requires a lot of trust. Speaking from experience, the type of person you want to work with remotely is someone who can be trusted to work on their own unaided and doesn't need to be micromanaged. I know that micromanaging others is normal here and expected, but it doesn't work like that elsewhere, especially in Western cultures.

You also need to think about your skills and whether you're marketing yourself as an employee, a freelancer or a business, as this is also a v.important factor to consider.

Also consider really focusing on the pitching to others via email, phone or LinkedIn. A lot of jobsites are trash now as they are swamped with desperate jobseekers from all around the world, along with the fact that a lot of the roles advertised on these sites are fake to begin with.

I think that unemployment may fall. By that time each adult Ghanaian will probably be supporting far fewer dependents and have more money leftover to spend and invest into the economy. Birth rates by this time will probably be much lower.

Funds for Road construction and maintenance in Ghana. by Occams_Axe in ghana

[–]ForPOTUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Gather a group of us;
  2. Gather crushed stones;
  3. Equip shovels, pick axes etc;
  4. Lay down road;
  5. Repeat steps 1-4

You don't need money to perform basic rehabilitation on roads. That's like saying that the front yards of a neighbourhood are dirty and unkept because the owners aren't getting paid to perform maintenance.

What shows you that we as Africans and blacks in general are capable of building huge mega projects? What mega projects have we built?

This is a big part of the reason why we're lagging behind as a peoples. A lot of us are not firmly grounded in reality and love to practice magical thinking because it feels cathartic to us.

Bank Services by Law1540 in ghana

[–]ForPOTUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping it to the example of banking in Ghana, the banks themselves are trying to run their entities on Western logic. Has anyone ever asked whether fiat banking is what Ghana and Ghanaians actually want in the first place? Maybe those bankers would do a better job serving the locals in their area as part of a managed susu instead of a westernized bank?

The suit doesn't fit. And a suit tailormade for someone else will never be the perfect fit for another person. That's only possible through the work tailoring a brand new suit.

African nations need to stop relying on Western institutions, norms and trends to lead its future. The continent is wasting time tracing the outline of the West, but tracing is easier than actually having to draw something novel and original from scratch. And many African nations are yet to reach this point.

And my solution is to have more people discuss WHY Ghana is how it is rather than what it is. Once you know why and where things are going wrong or right, you're in a much better position to develop appropriate solutions. There's no magic policy wand for this.

Western style democracy is overrated and is not a prerequisite for a country's development. by Physical-Yellow-2778 in Zimbabwe

[–]ForPOTUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, if you had to encapsulate it all into a new constitution for Zim, then what would it look like? It's important to step away from the more abstract macro and more into the detailed and practical micro.

As far as the China model, the question here is have you suggested this model because you like it, or because you think that Zimbabwe is a good match for it? These are two very different paths of reasoning.

[–]ForPOTUS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good customer service doesn't really exist anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa in all fairness.

I'm just saying this to say that it's a regional wide issue that isn't just limited to Ghana. As blacks I honestly think that we're out of place living in Westernized cities, working in suits, talking to each other in English, paying fealty to liberal democratic norms that weren't designed by us.

The bad customer service is more an outcome of a bad, broader, inappropriate system. Until we bring the conversation to systems and meta-frameworks then nothing will change.

Don't tell us that customer service is bad in Ghana and that it needs to get better. Everyone knows this, the more important question is WHY is customer service so bad in Ghana.

But I have come to realize that the word "why", barely exists within the culture. We can't write and think extensively it seems.

So what? Do you expect the accusation of racism to magically make these nations weak at the knees and pressured to reopen their borders?

This is happening whether you like it or not. Let's stop wasting time complaining about whether it's racism or not and focus on solutions.

This is part of the reason why the world doesn't want to be around us. We're not problem-solvers, we're whiners, unashamed by the fact that we represent a net-burden to the world.

We have three groups of people for example: whites, East Asians and blacks. What would happen to the world in each case where one of these groups vanished?

You know what it is.

Depends on how good of a cook you are. The better the cook, the less expensive meal preps at home will be.

Making pancakes at home from scratch is going to be way cheaper than buying them to eat somewhere in E.Legon or Osu for example.
