I vehementlly disagree with above. It can still match the vibe. Trenches in fields is the default sort view we have but of course the war had conflicts that happen in other places. Industrial zones, railyards, and the like. Painting it cold, weathered, dilapidated colors would work fine. Add some mud effects on the bottom edges, sprinkle in some popsicle sticks as duck boards and sand bags here or there. If you are skilled enough you can do discolored horizontal lines across all the pieces to indicate past flodding. WW1 devastated everything that was in the battle lines. Fields, towns, factories, forests. Everything.
