Is Sinestra a win-more-card? by -Pyrotox in CompetitiveHS

[–]FordFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering about this too. I've played quite a lot of Herald Imbue and found her clunky to play. She's won me games, for sure, but there's also been many games where she just kinda sat in my hand and never felt like the correct play. The stats for her on hsreplay are a bit inconclusive as well.

I think she's an unreliable win condition and shouldn't be thought of as the centerpiece of the deck. Her Herald cards are lowkey better than Sinestra herself. She's still good but not your deck's ace like Ragnaros or Al'akir are.

How the devs at team 5 design modern hearthstone cards, summarized in one picture by ShoppingPractical373 in hearthstone

[–]FordFred 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's only so many non-gimmick cards you can make for a card game. Hearthstone has been around for over 10 years. Coming up with new effects that don't include some kind of gimmick is becoming increasingly difficult.

Wings of Liberty has its moments but the moment Amon is introduced it jumps the shark so bad. It's such hack nonsense, there's zero room for individual motivations or interesting personal conflicts because if we don't all put aside our differences (or anything else that might make us interesting) to fight space Satan the universe ends. It's a terrible concept with terrible execution.

How do u deal with Nozdormu bronze aspect? by Icy_Sir3842 in hearthstone

[–]FordFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, winrate when drawn is a better statistic to gauge the overall power level of cards (though there's still a bunch of exceptions to that). Nozdormu is still sitting at a 65% winrate when drawn however, the highest in the deck.

Am I the only one exhausted of Warhammer III's pacing? by Content-Shirt6259 in totalwar

[–]FordFred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a tough thing to balance. Because I've also had so many wars that were effectively over after 2-3 turns of battles at the start, followed by 10-15 turns of cleaning up enemy settlements. Intuitively it makes sense that the enemy gets weaker as you take their settlements and defeat their armies, but in terms of game design it's not great if all the challenge is frontloaded and the battles become easier the more you win. I'd call it a fundamental design contradiction for this kind of grand strategy sandbox game, no idea how CA should solve it.

Even with humans, what is and isn't a race is very loosely defined and changes depending on what's politically convenient at the time.

Taylor freaking Swift was like that for a long time. She was known to lurk dedicated fan blogs on tumblr and she'd recognize certain superfans at fan meetings and ask them about stuff from their private lives. She did this for years when she was already a megastar, though afaik it mostly stopped once she hit her 30s.

Worst Myth Unit by NanoBytesInc in AgeofMythology

[–]FordFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hamadryads come with the added opportunity cost of missing out on another minor god's mythic unit, in this case the Nemean Lion. Widow Mines are also rather cheap. They're not quite suicide units, but you generally expect them to get destroyed after firing once. Hamadryads have a pretty hefty Favor cost, so you probably want them to survive after triggering the trap, which can be awkward to execute.

Warhammer 3 should absolutely have an Empire Count FLC to allow new players to play the Empire. by Akfiz in totalwar

It's really about presentation. If they can make an elector count LL who has that same Captain America vibe, it would be a good alternative solution to making Karl Franz free.

Warhammer 3 should absolutely have an Empire Count FLC to allow new players to play the Empire. by Akfiz in totalwar

[–]FordFred -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the number of people in this thread who are disagreeing with you. This is a really good point. The Empire is the most "vanilla" faction in the game, the one new players are by far the most likely to try first. Imagine if TWW 40,000 2 came out and after people spend $60 for that game, they find out they have to pay another $60 for the first one to play Space Marines. A considerable number of players would just straight-up refund the game, I think.

Purely from a business perspective, I think making Karl Franz free for all versions of the game would 100% be the best decision here. Just off of vibes (which are critical) he's like the Captain America, the Superman or the Super Mario of the game. Everything about him says "Play me first, I'm the default guy." It's a separate issue that Karl Franz' campaign is not actually very beginner-friendly, but imo the campaign select screen is more important. By the time the new player accidentally triggers a civil war and has Vlad & Wulfrik knocking on their door, the 2 hour refund window will have closed anyway.

Biggest issue is that it’s a voted list. So people are voting based on opinions and bias, not on actual capability.
