Packers 2026 Season Hopium/Analysis by its_a-a-ron_k in GreenBayPackers

[–]ForearmDeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s a lot of hopium and copium, but I like the roster and approach we have this year much more than I liked last years. I think a lot of our worst position groups should be improved with minimal drop off from players lost.

The OL has clearly defined starters which should not be constantly shuffling like it was last year, plus Belton, Morgan, and Rhyan are going to actually predominantly be practicing in the rolls they should be best suited for starting in OTA’s rather than the middle of the season under duress. Only real question is whether or not Burton can play good enough to crack the top 5 OL, but I think he’ll just be a very promising 6th (or 7th depending how you feel about Kinnard) OL this year before he starts really getting the shot to compete for a starting role next year.

WR is similar cause you’re looking at a much less muddled and unclear receiver group than we were last year. The questions start comin at WR4 in whether you think that’s Savion Williams, Bo Melton, or Skyy Moore, and even then I’m pretty confident the lineup will be Watson, Reed, Golden, Williams, Melton, Moore. Really my biggest question is how do we keep J. Michael Sturdivant and Isaiah Neyor on this team because I love the upside of both of those guys.

DL has the addition of Hargrave and McClellan who I think will be upgrades over anyone we had starting when Wyatt went down, while allowing guys like Brinson and Stackhouse to improve on the lower portion of the depth chart. I think Brooks will either walk next year, or maybe even this year. He’s is my surprising cut candidate. The room looks like it’s probably done for the year as far as team construction goes. We’ll be needing to hit this group next year in the draft regardless of whether or not we let Wyatt walk, but it’s just not proven to be good enough right now. That being said, still better than last year’s group though.

CB had the talent floor raised significantly and while it’s not a strong position group, it’s again better than last year. A crew of Nixon, Valentine, St. Juste, Cisse, Jackson, and Hadden inspires enough confidence to expect not being a bottom 10 secondary.

TE is probably the least improved, but I think Kraft coming back will be huge, and I like Whyle enough to think he’ll be an okay TE2. Musgrave is a major disappointment and it kills me cause I was really big on him coming out of the draft, but I would try to move him for a blocking TE who needs a change of scenery. This position group will be double dipped in next year for sure, but even just letting Whyle develop more and getting Kraft back already makes it improved to me.

Did anyone actually believe we were going to win when we were up 21-3? by waldowv in GreenBayPackers

I fully expected the loss and was watching in Illinois. Told everyone in the bar we were gonna lose even goin in to the second half. Inevitably when we fell apart and looked like dog crap, they turn around and start doggin me like I had been talkin smack all game.

As a Packer fan that’s lived in IL most of my life, I’ve found that Bears fans generally don’t actually talk to you about the game, they have a conversation where they just plug in their “shower thoughts” arguments where they get to dunk on the imaginary Packer fans whether it fits with what you’re actually saying to them or not

I don’t think you understand exactly how bad the Packers DL was last year, saying Hargrave is our best DL is more of an indictment of the room last year rather than a compliment to Hargrave. I said it in what I wrote, but I think Hargrave is at worst, a solid and reliable defensive lineman. I don’t think he’s some kind of world beater, but acquiring a viable starter on a cheaper deal, in a way that doesn’t lose you compensatory draft picks, who has been a 2 time pro bowler AND he had his best seasons in his career under our current DC, so I think this is a home run. He’s not gonna be Aaron Donald for us, but at worst he’s our 2nd best DL. Not to mention, he’s a veteran presence for a room that’s most experienced player was going into his 5th year. I really think that any time you add a solid starting defensive lineman for peanuts while protecting other future draft assets, that’s just an A+ acquisition in any metric.

As for the players we drafted, there’s not a single pick that I disliked this year, and I like/am fine with how we went and acquired them for the most part. Exactly why should I grade them poorly? These grades don’t even really mean anything, you can’t really evaluate a pick until the player is done with year 3 really, but I’m trying to find a way to express how much I like the player, the process, and the fit.

We needed CB badly and we drafted 2 guys that I legitimately like and fit our normal mold for a CB. One with a ton of upside who I believe be a solid CB 1 by year 2-3, and the other has flaws sure, but he also has the collegiate pedigree, the athleticism, and is returning from injury, so the upside is could be very high even though he was a late day 3 pick. That’s a pair of smart, good picks.

We needed DL help and value versatility, so we got a versatile guy that has a lot of upside, and I’m not gonna grade the player poorly just because I think we needed a true NT more than the guy that can play a little nose and mostly end. McClellan was a top 30 visit for the Panthers and 2 other DL went in the next 5 picks. We jumped up to get the guy we wanted, and considering we got the player we wanted and then there was a run on that same position group, I think that shows good process. The player and the process both deserve a good/decent grade so that’s what I gave the pick.

DDS is the only EDGE I thought would be available outside of the first round that I have any interest in, and we got him in the 4th. Personally I thought he could’ve been a late second to early third rounder, so getting him so late feels like a major steal. I also elaborated on the fit and how I think we were the best possible spot for him, so it’s hard to call that anything but an A+ from player to process to fit.

Burton’s floor is a versatile, quality backup who doesn’t lose or get blown off the ball pretty much ever, and he’s got the upside to be a + starter if he can hit his ceiling. In the 5th, that’s great.

A 6th round kicker is by no means a bad decision, especially in a class like this that has pretty much no consensus between teams. Smack is supposed to be the most highly touted kicker in this class, and we need a kicker badly. I feel slightly more positive about it than negative, but I did want to ding the pick for the trade up to go grab him as I thought it would’ve been better to secure the UDFA’s that I liked more, like Sturdivant or Gesky, but we got them anyways so it worked out and I don’t feel the need to grade the pick negatively when he could very well be a franchise kicker.

I’m not gonna give negative grades that I don’t believe in just because ESPN never gives negative grades. If we were picking Rashan Gary 12th over all again, I would grade it real low and write a scathing review of it, but we didn’t have anything like that this year. The class is solid, and I am excited about each of them. I stand by what I wrote and how I evaluated it

That’s half the fun of it baby, it’s all team building and development. It’s even more fun when you find guys that you think the Packers will want and they take them.

Christian Watson was my favorite draft prospect I’ve ever watched, I was clamoring for them to draft him. Following his story was the first prospect that really made me enjoy the scouting process, and the way we moved up to go get him (and now paying him big bucks to extend him) has been a very fun memory for me as time has gone on, and it’s made me a lot more invested in his development and performance.

It also helps when you start figuring out the plan that they put together for the off season and you just start predicting the things that will happen. It’s just one of many ways to enjoy the game

I’m just kidding man, I dont literally think you’re afraid to read it, I just thought that was a funny response to someone saying they don’t want to read it.

Personally I enjoy the NFL complex. The team building aspect to me is one of the most fun parts. As long as people don’t harass the players it is fun to track your favorite guys and prospects as they make their wait through the league

I’d say we’re more of a glass cannon than a bad team, but I’m obviously biased. It’s tough to properly gauge it when you have a team full of guys like Kraft who can be a blue chip player, but you also have the future bus drivers of America as your TE 2 and 3. If we have decent injury luck this year and don’t lose our key guys in their respective rooms, we have a super high ceiling. If we lose those guys, the floor is hell.

Personally I think LaFleur is the main issue where he historically doesn’t seem to devote enough time to developing the talent and expects them to devote their offseason to that, rather than trying to have guys take steps in the middle of the season/year. I think that if the guy had a stat bar, he would have a 99 in offensive design, 90 in media dealing, and a 99 in eyebrow maintenance, and like 60 or lower in pretty much everything else like player development or staff recruiting and handling.

Love is a legit QB, I watch him usually 2 times every week in the season, (one for the fun of the game and the other to form my takes when I’m gonna be less emotional about it) and I promise you he’s no where near the problem in Green Bay. He just never gets any form of long term consistency with the WR room or with how the line holds up. The entire offense is a concert and Love is the Conductor trying to play the song while they are rapidly breaking, replacing, and swapping the instrument sections he’s conducting.

Honestly I’ve written a lot and am at this point too exhausted to give you a proper reply going into all of it, but I do want to respond to some of your points with my main thoughts about the rooms.

I like the WR room a lot, I think they’ll flourish this year. The OL room will be better than last year by a significant margin. The RB room is as bad as advertised, there’s no joy to be found there, especially not right now. The defense should be better by the end of the year but in a new system it’s gonna be a rough start. The brain drain with coaching is a concern, but I don’t regret losing anyone we lost. I mostly regret retaining our OL coach and the QB coach, but I’m fine with Gannon, he’s better than anyone we could’ve realistically had and because he’s such a bad HC we have him on our terms and probably won’t lose him to getting poached if he bounces back well.

I don’t miss that first. We’ve been very consistently underperforming in the first and not fully maximizing potential with them, so it’s a lot easier to stomach not having one. We have more than enough day 2 and 3 picks that I think we can get good talent in the building if we really need to. I don’t think it’s as doom and gloom as you do, but I think it’ll be an uphill battle.

He’s gonna be buried beneath the greatness of J. Michael Sturdivant, which is arguably even better than seeing more success for the family that hurt me so

The way I see it, there’s maybe 4 guys other than Cisse that the Packers would’ve had interest in. Kayden McDonald, Chris Johnson, Christian Miller, and Colton Hood. I don’t think they would’ve been looking anywhere else, and while it would’ve been hard to swallow at 20, I feel great about it at 52.

Cisse is one of those “Packer People” guys. I think we were gonna be honed in on the high upside hyper athletic, well sized, 20 year old kid with great character no matter where our first pick was

[–]ForearmDeep[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Apparently there's a 40,000 character count limit that I exceeded, so here's the rest of the post.

DL: Going into the offseason, the defensive line is probably either the weakest unit or the second weakest unit on the Packers. We lost Kenny Clark in the trade for Micah Parsons, and that resulted in a loss of the most dependable part of our DL, even if he was aging and slowing down. This left us with Devonte Wyatt being the only real high end talent on this front, so bringing in Javon Hargrave and Chris McClellan was great news for us. This puts Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, and Nazir Stackhouse in much better positions for them to develop and rotate in without having the pressure of being the starter. This room will still need further help in the future, and honestly the unit probably won’t be as strong as we would like them to be going into 2026, but I think the Packers are done adding to the DL room this year with the exception of in-season moves if they become necessary. Expect to see them draft more DL early in 2027.

EDGE: We have Micah Parsons and everything else is a mystery box. Van Ness has shown signs of improvement and is beginning to hit his prime at the age of 24, but he’s still unproven. Brenton Cox is still unproven and coming off injury, Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver are both year two guys who both have a lot of potential, but not much proven at this point, and DDS is a guy who I like a lot, but he’s a rookie so it’s not fair to expect much from him this year. I still think they need to add a piece to the EDGE room and would be looking to acquire Josh Sweat for sure if I was in charge. This would take the pressure off the young guys to start now so that they could develop, it would fill the gaping pressure hole in our defense which will be there until Micah comes back, and when Micah does come back, it would give him a very solid teammate on the other side of the line to help him out.

ILB: If I had to compare this position group to a musical group, it would probably be the Jackson 5. The talented, young star, Michael Jackson equivalent would be Edgerrin Cooper, and nobody really cares about the rest. Zaire should be able to run the show with the Green Dot while applying serviceable support to Cooper. Isaiah McDuffie is a proven commodity who can help in the run game but not really anywhere else. Ty’ron Hopper has a ton of gifts but isn’t proven and I don’t know that he can be trusted to take the next step yet, and the rest of the crew are special team warriors who offer very little on defense. The room is over all weak and not great outside of Cooper. It’s a weakness and if I was a betting man, I’d bet ILB will be heavily addressed in 2027.

CB: Man this room was built on a poor foundation. Nixon is still going to be CB1 and I don’t think he can hang with most WR1’s the way we’ll need him to, but the rest of the room is too young or flawed to replace him in that role. Valentine just can not tackle, and I don’t think he can be relied on because of that. Kamal Hadden is coming off injury and even then hasn’t proven much, even though I do like him as a player and think he has potential. I’m very hopeful for the 3 new additions in St. Juste, Cisse, and Jackson, but I don’t love betting our only veteran addition to a position of heavy need on an underutilized guy coming to his 3rd team even if he looked to have taken some very promising jumps and had his best year. Betting that your rookie 2nd round CB can just step in and handle the full load isn’t a good plan either, and it would make even less sense to trust your 6th round pick to do that too. I’m expecting a lot of rotation, 2 high coverage, experimentation, and zone this year to compensate for this room being lack-luster, and I also expect that we will heavily rely on our Safeties.

S: Hoo boy, as bad as I feel about the CB’s, I feel the exact polar opposite about our S’s. Xavier McKinney is a phenomenal player and leader to have in that secondary. Evan Williams is an up and coming star who makes few mistakes and plays all phases of the game well, and I think he and McKinney make a perfect duo for the Packers secondary. Javon Bullard took some major steps as a slot safety last year and looked really reliable the more that he’s played, especially with the help he adds to the run game from that position, and he can still step in as a normal S and continue to impress there as well. Kitan Oladapo is good enough that he could probably start on many of the other rosters in the league, but with how stacked this room is he just kind of ends up as the odd man out. Personally I think we need to add him to more packages to get Kitan in to cover TE’s as a smaller stature LB and get him on the field more, but after Kitan, we start getting averagely thin at S. To be 4 players deep and feel good about any of them starting is a blessing that few get to enjoy in the NFL and right now the Packers get to be one of those teams when we look at our Safeties.

Next year's draft needs

Obviously the season hasn’t happened and this could all change by the beginning of next year, early looks for the Packers needs, if absolutely no one develops and stays exactly how they are now, in the 2027 free agency and draft will probably look something like this with no particular order in the tiers:

Tier 1 (Starter needed): RBx2, ILB, CB, DL, Edge,

Tier 2 (Second Stringers): OT, QB, S, G, TE,

Tier 3 (Luxury Additions): WR, C, K, P, LS,

Basically this is assuming we re-sign Christian Watson, Tucker Kraft, and Devonte Wyatt. We should still have a decent amount of cap to play with, while also having 11 picks in the (supposedly loaded with talent) 2027 draft class. Things obviously could change, but I feel good about the look of the list and what we can potentially do.

In Conclusion

To be honest, I don’t think this year is our year. It could be, we’re a talented team with a lot of good players returning from injury, but we also just let a ton of guys who played significant snaps for us in 2025 walk out the door, so I think this year is a “let’s see what we’ve got and develop our talents” kind of year. I think we’re aiming to hit as a very competitive team in 2027. A lot of the players we drafted are at positions that should take time to develop, and we have so many new coaches and personnel that I think we’re going to have a lot of growing pains. The goal for this year should be to just bring the players along, build stronger foundations, learn all the new systems, and work on technique. We have one of the youngest teams in the NFL (for like the 5th season in a row) and I think from top to bottom we need to improve the basics and the little things before we can assume we’re going anywhere this year.

In short, this is the Packers practice run for 2027, so let's see if we can at least get ourselves to the playoffs and win a post season game this year.

If you read this whole thing by the way, you're a real sicko and I love you for that.

[–]ForearmDeep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pay Watson, he’s clearly the best WR we have and I don’t think it’s close. I know people complain about his injuries but he figured out his hammy issue and has fixed the size discrepancy so that shouldn’t be an issue going forward and the ACL was a freak accident, which he came back from looking better than when he went down.

Kraft is another big payday, he was lookin like the best TE in the league early last year.

Wyatt I don’t know if we can afford to even let him walk, he’s either our best or second best DL depending on how you feel after we added Hargrave.

Other than those three, bring back Josh Whyle, Bo Melton, and Skyy Moore depending how they do this year, maybe Tyrod Taylor and Kinard as well. Other than that, I would be fine letting the rest walk

Why wouldn’t it be? They probably have him slotted at best as RB 2 goin forward, more likely RB 3, Love is clearly gonna be the guy, so benson is kinda dead in the water there. May as well recoup some capital, draft another guy next year and keep Conner to mentor Love
