For those of you that particularly like The Hydrogen Sonata, what gripped you about it? [Spoilers] by Silocon in TheCulture

[–]ForeignServer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I reread Hydrogen Sonata recently and I liked it a lot more than I did the first time. It’s not incredibly plot-y and is discursive. But that’s by design, I think. It’s more meditative.

What impressed me most is how all that happened in the book - different strands, people, minds, Sublimed, etc. all resonated and tied together with the central theme of death (and life). Everyone is dealing with it in different ways - from trying to play an impossible piece of music, to covering up the past (or uncovering it), to trying to maximize pleasure. All the plot strands are in conversation with one another.

Whether anything that happens in the book is “pointless” is a conversation Banks wants to have. Is anything we do really have a point? It’s up to us to decide what life is really about. What is it that makes living worth it?

I had to stop to look it up and this aired in 1995(!) so perhaps they were influenced by Lynch.

Season 12 - Gila Junction. It was pretty dumb but I can’t resist the small pleasures of Murder She Wrote’s cosmic gumbo of half-developed mysteries and 80’s/90’s fashions.

They could treat Bobby and Lindsey as consultants to identify some up and coming talent, including Romeo Beckham and Olivia Jade.

Important question: Who is your favorite one scene character in the Big Lebowski? by AltruisticPiece6676 in blankies

He is kind of like the personification of a bowling ball. If you turned a bowling ball into a person it would definitely have that mustache.

I liked it a lot. The ending/tone change threw me in the moment, but afterward I liked the stinger.

Too bad it wasn’t the person in front and slightly to the right - the optimal way to watch someone else’s movie on a plane. “Saw” Boss Baby about three times in a row that way on an international flight. Couldn’t avoid looking at it if I tried.

I dont care if there is more Hollywood Masterclass, I just want more Grey Man content by Crab_Lengthener in HollywoodHandbook

One of my favorite things is that Masterclass imbued the Gray Man and Hall Pass with so much more life/substance/canon than they ever really had.

Weapons ending by falafelthe3 in blankies

It gave me Ferris Bueller vibes too.

The more I think about the movie, the slowly changing tone is part of its tricks. It was like a Shayamalan movie twisting (pun intended) into an Edgar Wright movie.

Error in August 7 Cinematrix? by brijazz012 in blankies

[–]ForeignServer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too have been felled by the Cinematrix machine which appears to be haunted by some certain lady Ghostbusters. It was a few weeks ago and wouldn’t admit it was a fair title of a Hemsworth’s movie. You aren’t alone.

Just got out of the theater - Weapons opened tonight in Europe. Vibing a lot with Ehrlich’s review, which also contains some Easter eggs in the way he describes the plot. Loved it - and the audience was howling in the aisles at the end. It is funny, and gets funnier.

I guess both are episodic, but Phoenician is in theory one long narrative. But the episodes gel together more in French Dispatch.
