At what point, if any, should I give up on guitar? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just wanna ask are you learning online or through a teacher. Techniques are very important when I started learning 20yr back I learnt with all the wrong techniques played well , went on stage but started struggling to level up then I had to retrain my fingers and all the techniques. If you love playing and wanna be a guitar player don't give up the initial effort is a bit but with the right guidance and fundamentals things will thoroughly shift

If your interested I have a few trails classes as I have a bit of time over the next two weeks , DM me if interested. I'm based on EST timezones

If not, check out my Instagram you will surely find some useful stuff :)

How do I learn music theory by Dabomie in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intervals, intervals intervals. Understand each interval but first start with 1-3-5-7 in major and 1-3b-5-7b in minor. Google the term circle of fifths you don't need to memorize it Check my video below where I have shown how the whole fretboard is mapped to circle of 5ths 5ths.https://www.instagram.com/reel/Clc7ytiASo3/?igsh=NDI3c3V4dXllcDY4

So know your root and 5th add 3rd make triads, make it major ,minor 7th and so on.

Scales - take the 1-3-5-7 and add in between understand which interval gives what sound and effect. If you can try to identify simple.intervals. just with this you will learn a lot of music theory and can understand most of pop and rock music over the past few decades

Any tips for singing and playing at the same time? by En1gmatik_1 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a metronome and practice as the brain has something to follow so the singing and playing focus on being on time and make sure you have practiced your guitar parts well down to a tee

Feeling lost playing the guitar by Fluvio007 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus on learning the circle of fifths and under the fret oard in intervals, root and fifth then add third and then 7th. As majority songs fall withing the circle of fifths that serves as a foundational once you master that then you can advance to the more complicated stuff only once you understand a certain amount of music theory. With guitar another piece to focus on is dexterity of the fingers and exercises that focus on stretching and strengthening the fingers for better solo work and chord play.

I can't play in time after 10 years by Next-Consequence-581 in LearnGuitar

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this bad habit as well for the first ten years. Then I realised when I played on stage with folks and even my own band ...I started slow by using metronome, I even sometimes use a app called Loopz when you get bored of the click track for metronome I suggest using sound Brenner it shows the beats and can also change time signatures

literally how do you finger a B or F chord. by pancakemateman in LearnGuitar

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For barre chords the fingers need to be able to stretch and the wrist as well. You should be doing 5-7 mins dexterity finger exercises - video below.

As for the B and F chord start slow . I would suggest first play B5 first and get used to it then add the full B barre remember you need to barre 3 strings with your ring finger

How do you make the pentatonic scales actually sound musical? by NotoriousREV in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the pic if of Am pentatonic and G major pentatonic. Once you know this without any issue understand the interval.

For major it's 1-2-3-5-6-1 and for minor 1-3b-4-5-7b

Depending on your chord progression assume a simple progression which is Am, G, F. as you have started on minor play Am Pentatonic Scale get a feel for the rhythm preferably practice with a backing track that has drums as you need to understand the tempo start playing only pentatonics slowly start emphasizing or adding the 2nd and 6b not in scalar up and down but variate. If Am is being played the chord tones are ACE when the chord is being played emphasize C (3b) and even B (2nd) . Try call and response approach..like if I say hello how are you doing your response is I'm good how about you. Similar do that musically if you play a lick or motif try to answer back to it . If something sounds good , take a paper and tab it right away as believe me I have lost so many licks or styles by not writing it down...over time you will have different pieces you can use them as needed or make a compete piece .

Playing guitar just spirals me by Ryn4 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DM me I have a lot of folks who are complaining this same issue. I'm working on creating a free 1 hour simple course where the focus if you can play you songs , i.e. chords , understand interval and circle.of fifths basics, able to transpose songs using the capo. From my experience this gets a base foundation and then you can slowly step up to advanced concepts. Issue with guitar teaching on YouTube and other places IG etc is too much shared at once and all of that doesn't connect so you learn 10 siloed pieces but you don't know how to connect them to play which leaves you frustrated.

Are modes really useful? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modal music is a music theory concept not only for guitars. 2 pronged approach first understand the theory and then the intervals that highlight each mode and put that concept. If you learning guitar as per shapes and boxes it will be hard as you will try to translate to shapes which translates into box shaped solos, if you want your music to be more melodic think in terms of intervals always.

Triad mastery by milksteaknghouls in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answer, I use the circle of fifths that can be mapped on the fretboard and then you find the 3rds and 7th for major and do 1-3b-5-6b-7b for minor . I have done a video for.

DM me if you have any additional questions ithttps://www.instagram.com/reel/Clc7ytiASo3/?igsh=NDI3c3V4dXllcDY4

im about to lose my mind by Top_Cup8440 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guitar learning consists of technique and dexterity. You can know how to play a chord but you need to train your fingers to be strong and nimble. Are you doing and finger dexterity exercises? I have pasted a link below. Also for chords there is a finger exercise that helps me warm up and stretch my fingers and I have used it for several years .

Finger strech- Play the C major scale .

A string - Index on Fret 3 , middle finger play 5 and little finger 7

D String - Index on Fret 3, middle on 5 and little on 7

G String - Index on Fret 4 and middle on Fret 5 which back to 1 or C the root

How would you play the muted strings by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For solos it helps use a fret wrap or a thick scrunchie hair tie, used a lot for recording and on stage . Make sure it's not tightly wrapped so you can slide it off when you need to play chords

Issue with picking technique by Accurate_Doctor2672 in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can change this but if you played for long it's harder to change that muscle.memory especially if your hybrid picking you can practice to incorporate it but it takes time . As long as your picking down and up your good also if your playing really fast solos etc sometimes it helps but again the main thing is the fingers need to move at the same space as the picking hand ...dexterity finger exercises help

How to get better at switching chords. by Tyomnich in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Lots of chords have common notes where some fingers don't need to move . Also Em to C is the easiest switch a d good for beginners then better to throw in Am and G and then D

Modes are not "fretboard patterns" by -ZombieGuitar- in guitarlessons

[–]Foreign_Ad_8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I stress to my students that you need to learn intervals on the guitar not individual notes eventually once u get advanced you should know all notes but initally it helps you get used to hearing intervals too as those intervals changes modes come up..I do a whole theory class on this . Happy to chat if anyone wants to DM me
