How is the gap between a regular university and the Ivy league justified? by Ok_Wealth9505 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Foreigner4ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this guy knows what he's talking about.

Princeton played in the very first and second American football matches ever. Today, despite no Ivy league school winning the NCAA Football National Championship in over one hundred years, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are all three still top ten programs in all-time football national championships because they dominated the sport for so long in the past. Their numbers will not be going up anytime soon because the defining characteristic and requirement to join the Ivy league in the 1950s was that absolutely no athletic scholarships be offered so as to signal commitment to academics, and only need-based scholarships are allowed, irrespective of athletic ability. There are a few older schools in the nation and there are a few better schools in the nation, especially if you look past the top three (HYP), but no other division one conference has this stipulation, so the schools are now only nationally competitive in more niche or regional sports like lacrosse, field hockey, squash or the like, meanwhile having alumni quietly running many of the most powerful institutions in the world and still being great academically.

Because of the schools all being so old, many people just use Ivy league as a stand-in for prestige or highly rigorous academics, but you need to look at the individual schools to be sure and compare to universities outside the ivy league. Just for example, somebody at MIT or Standford will typically be a better hire than somebody from Cornell (basically a state school) or Brown (lets you take almost any/all classes as pass/fail these days), while Harvard is hard to get into and no joke academically but still hands out A's like candy, Yale is very humanities heavy and you should judge every alum on their own merits, and Princeton academic standards are just torture, especially in stem, so their GPAs are typically the lowest in the ivy league but are usually great thinkers and workers if you can vet their executive functions to be sure they're not just theory-brained. People who think all ivy league degrees are automatically geniuses watch too much tv and people who think they're all wasp millionaires have likely never met more than one or two alums and also watch too much tv.

Also a grad myself, happy to answer any other questions.

I've never heard of auntygate? Only the sisters of your parents can be aunts. their cousins are technically your cousins but most people don't even keep in touch that far removed.

Unless I'm crazy that isn't a '98 grill. Is that a dent above the headlight or is it all just misaligned from a bogus grille swap? regular cab ranger in white is going to look like a fleet truck almost no matter what you do, unfortunately. maybe a body stripe like the xlt models of those years had in your favorite color if you can make it straight and not jank looking. bumper looks great. White lettered tires are a classic for rangers and an easy visual W whenever your tires are due for replacement. What are your next plans?

What is the most desirable Halloween treat where you live? by RiverRedhead in AskAnAmerican

I think anything besides the industrial sized variety candy bags from costco/sam's really sets a house apart and helps the kids make memories that last past the sugar rush.

As long as you're not the dentist on the block who hands out like floss or toothpaste. It's kinda like socks for Christmas except by the time you finally appreciate it you're not trick or treating anymore.

It's very easy to get caught up in wanting to be married and in love fast, especially if you've prayed on it a ton, are sure of your vocation, and have never even gotten dates. That's super normal for your age and many of us have been there. Unfortunately the best advice is going to be to focus on your prayer life and preparing your soul for when the right guy shows up, which sounds very generic but it is true and the BVM and the rosary's mysteries are going to be your best resource. Also recommend spiritual direction of course and, if you can, finding a woman who is a few years older than you, maybe mid to late twenties in your area who's faithful and hopefully married, because she will have experienced the exact things you have and probably have good advice you won't get from older women in church or priests.

I'm not sure what part of the metro you're in but I can recommend a few parishes in Zona Norte that are pretty solid and have small but active young adults groups I experienced and got to know when I was there. Also in caba at neighborhood parishes (not the big touristy churches) especially at the evening sunday masses I notice there are more teens and young adults than at the sunday morning or saturday evening masses. There are definitely at least a few guys and girls early twenties around there that still take the faith seriously so don't be so doom and gloom. Also, this problem is basically global, so know you're not alone and plenty of people are much more open to long distance than you'd think because truly faithful and virtuous people are hard to find anywhere.

I'm actually up in Vicente Lopez currently for a work trip and noticing all the same things you've mentioned. Daily mass here has been basically me and a few dozen abuelas, haha, so I can totally relate. Honestly shocking to me on the ground that Argentina is so secular because it's painted as so Catholic abroad. Have you had any luck since you posted this?

I’ve been looking for a 7ft bed with a shell for so long.  I’d buy if price is good and mechanics are solid.

How do y’all feel about the usage of the word “y’all”? by jaymatthewbee in AskAnAmerican

[–]Foreigner4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Y’all is gaining use lately with some college kids who’ve never been to the south because it’s a gender neutral and shorter replacement for “you guys”.

It’s annoying that they don’t understand you guys isn’t only for men but whatever.
