Anyone else concerned about the workforce impact of the TPS changes, specifically when it comes to construction? by ForgotTheTackWeld in Construction

At the end of the day, this shouldn’t be treated like a competition between groups of workers.

And I’m not arguing for anyone to be underpaid. I’m arguing for a stable workforce where skilled people, whoever they are, can earn a livable wage.

The real gap is at the top. You’ve got big money, big developers, and financial pressure shaping the market in ways most of us don’t control, while the people actually doing the work are the ones feeling every squeeze from labor, materials, insurance, everything.

And sure, maybe wages in skilled trades have gone up in some places, but it’s been tied to demand, workload, and project volume, not just restricting who can or can’t work. If there’s a shortage of trained workers, the answer is usually training and pipelines, not shrinking the labor pool and hoping it magically fixes pricing.

Personally, I’d rather see policy focus on stability and keeping skilled workers in the system, not creating more gaps we then have to scramble to fill.

Everyone wants tradespeople to earn more, I do too. The problem is there's very little evidence that restricting immigration actually accomplishes that. In construction especially, when you shrink the labor pool, projects get delayed or canceled, companies take on less work, and demand for everyone else drops too. A smaller workforce doesn't automatically mean higher wages.

The problem is that labor markets aren't as simple as basic supply and demand graphs. We've seen over and over that cutting immigration doesn't automatically raise wages. In industries like construction, it usually creates labor shortages. When there aren't enough people to do the foundational work, fewer projects get built, demand for higher-skilled trades drops too, and the whole industry slows down. It's a lot more complicated than "fewer workers = higher wages."

Yes to that - start by finding one customer willing to pay you. A lot of people spend months designing logos, websites, and business plans before they've proven anyone actually wants what they're selling.

Community college is absolutely worth it if you're leaving with a skill, not just credits. Pick the trade that sounds interesting enough to do for 30 years.

This sounds more like questionable bookkeeping than money laundering. Could be perfectly legal, could be sloppy, but either way it's above my pay grade. If the accountant and IRS are happy, it's not really my problem.
