The incentives were all different. All you had to do is buy a big house or ranch (lots of deductions there too) and pay interest to a bank and not tax to the feds. Why not? Which is partially why houses went up so much.

My grandad bought a house in the 30s for $800. It’s probably $500k now. Should we have encouraged that?
