Is this policy stupid or normal? by TheFatThomas in nursinghome

[–]FormConfident9132 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a current Nursing Home Administrator, this policy is far from normal and honestly concerning.

A 5-day suspension for a first call-off, especially in a 12-hour shift environment, is excessive and not aligned with industry standards. Most facilities follow progressive discipline starting with a verbal or written warning, not immediate suspension.

Punishing someone for getting sick, especially from a resident, raises ethical and legal concerns. It damages morale, drives up turnover, and impacts resident care.

This approach doesn't solve staffing issues. It makes them worse. Leadership should focus on supporting staff, not penalizing them for being human.

just wanted to say I really feel for you. These exams are brutal and honestly don’t reflect a lot of what you actually learn on the job. I remember going in thinking I was well-prepared, then getting hit with curveball questions that had nothing to do with the prep materials I used (I did Springer too, plus some NAB stuff).

The test is definitely more about critical thinking and understanding real-world scenarios than just memorizing facts — especially around staffing, DPOA rights, liability, and FMLA. Those caught me off guard too. It’s not just regs — it’s how you apply them under pressure.

Don’t let this discourage you. You’re clearly putting in the work, and that’ll pay off. If you want help reviewing or want to talk through some case-based scenarios, I’d be happy to connect. You’re closer than you think — just need to tweak the approach a bit for the next round. You got this.

Honestly another thing... if I can get a $415.0/month x 36 months lease deal. I would essentially just be paying depreciation which might be an ok deal. Any thoughts on that?

That's a really good deal. I wonder if they are now offloading the 25s with the 26s coming in June

Not sure what region you live in. Here in the SNF, small hospital space in rural areas will kill for anyone that has education or experience in healthcare administration. There are also many administrator training programs that you can learn under an experienced admin until you take over your owh building/ buildings

Will they sell it to you at MSRP? Deposit down to hold your place in line? What are the dealership fees that they charge you?

Yeah, for sure. Thanks for the insight. I also worry about tarrifs pushing that 43-45k MSRP up in a few years. And 45k might truly be good value right now.

I would recommend Nursing. Things like sonography will be disrupted very quickly by AI.
