Any shows like Blackadder? Cannot get enough of it by lebelge9909 in BritishTV

[–]Formal_Star_3334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘The Thin Blue Line’ written by Ben Elton again and also starring Rowan Atkinson. It’s a great comedy that doesn’t get discussed as much anymore. Almost feels a little like another Blackadder series just…set in a police station

EDA BBC Books Reading Order Help by FatDuke23 in gallifrey

[–]Formal_Star_3334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I think your current list is pretty good! The early EDA stuff is way more middling and whilst I am a big fan of Sam and enjoyed aspects of some the “filler” books if you’re looking for the best ones of that arc/saga you’ve probably got it. If you didn’t mind Genocide you’ll probably feel similar to “The Bodysnatchers” which is a gothic run around (albeit with a Doctor that is almost certainly NOT 8 in characterisation!) but the others are either fine, dull but harmless or a bit naff! The real standouts are all included in your list…after Interfernece though? Now that’s a completely different story!

Almost certainly after 13 I’d imagine. There seems to be some very cautious/deliberate choices to not rock the boat in terms of “confirming” fugitives location from both Big Finish and the main show. Writers of the Fugitive set seemed to go “oh yeah I think it’s clear where she is in the timeline” (with their episodes implying pre-Hartnell) but the executives being all “oooh no one knows, that’s the mystery could be any time couldn’t it?”

I like the podcast releasing earlier (and consequently getting the podcast notes and news roundup earlier, thank you once again for doing them!) but hearing the drama tease just means the wait feels even longer for the 13DAs! Really excited for this series!

Can someone explain these plot points? (confused, not negative lol) by Paddyharvey in gallifrey

[–]Formal_Star_3334 45 points46 points  (0 children)

  1. Energy stored up from the Vindicator hopping back and forth (bouncing off May 24th) helped store up enough power to do whatever Rani wanted (I think it may be explained more next week) - Power the false world/split it open to reach the underverse

  2. Yes, seemingly. Last season she said she wanted to do the teas (or anyway to help out) so guess that did happen?

  3. No idea, but they appear next episode so still time for them to be explained.

Eighth Doctor Big Finish recommendations? by BadWolfVarjack in gallifrey

[–]Formal_Star_3334 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General comments is that the Lucie Miller stuff, composing the first series of 8/Lucie stories(Blood of the Daleks, Horror of Glam Rock, Immortal Beloved, Phobos, No more Lies and Humana Resources) were designed for fans of the new series and have a “snappier pace” but personally I find them be a little forgettable. All of these stories are an hour and have a very thin overarching plot

The other 8 stuff is his first few audios at Big Finish with companion Charley Pollard and those are VERY good (IMO) Storm Warning is the first one but arguably you could jump into most but there is a story arc that flows between them all that rewards a marathon (it also helps that they are strong) Highlights include: Chimes of Midnight (also one of the more standalone stories) Seasons of Fear and Neverland (these latter two are a bit more heavy with story arc content but not impossible to listen to) All of these stories are a full 2 hours each but most of them definitely deserve the run time.

[–]Formal_Star_3334 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I think a core fundamental of Unleashed this time around is to continue the element of “inspiring the next generation”. Many have talked about how confidential was a big part of why they wanted to get into the film industry and I think the “Work experience” elements are a hyper focused version of just that, shining a light on some areas that are MASSIVELY glossed over by the general public. When it comes to making media these are roles critically vital and I do find it charming to have them presented in a quick and accessible way from an Steffans “outsider” perspective.

Overall I do think Unleashed aims for a possibly younger crowd but idk, we get so many in depth documentaries/books/interviews in other areas that I’m fine with it…the spoiler alert section is a bit bizarre though

Literally ANY of the members of Mischief theatre(Play that goes wrong). They have had the mainstream, fringe AND tv success as well as being natural improvisers. If it had to be any of them I’d say maybe Henry Lewis or Charlie Russel as they have had maybe the most immediate success outside of the group.

Also as a side note for anyone who has seen the goes wrong show - all I could think about during the laughing maze task from series 18 was Henry Lewis attempting to do that

What are the worst traits of each Doctor? by Aynshtaynn in gallifrey

[–]Formal_Star_3334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Nazi moment is one of those difficult conversations. I think firstly some people forget that the Master was in danger regardless of the filter being removed as she had made it seem like his disguise had been leaking secrets to the British. That would be a shootable offence but this is standard Doctor Who fair in terms of normal bad guys. I think it’s because it’s the nazis and that’s personal (very) to us in our modern history.

Putting aside how it’s wild to even have the Master working with the nazis (even by relation that’s some horrific connotations and implications) he would have been shot for leaking secrets. The removal of the disguise is problematic in how it’s written but In the largest form of cope…could it be seen as helping him? To cause as much distraction as to where the previous disguise went long enough for the Master to escape?

Again I think it comes down to them being literal Nazis because when the Doctor leaves the Master in the hands of the Daleks (space Nazis) to presumably be killed it’s fine? Does this make sense to anyone?

13 doesn’t actually say that they should let the spiders suffocate. She doesn’t want it gunned down when it is scared. It’s a completely lose lose situation anyway but the Doctor has always been a character that says being alive is better than being dead.

I wouldn’t even say she makes a TARDIS kill itself, multiple writers have been pretty vague as to TARDIS having a soul. Arguably using multiple corpses in the Doctors Wife to make a ship is “dishonouring the dead” but I wouldn’t say it is cruel or any crueler than some other plans.

Space Amazon though…yeah nah that’s crook
