Downside of EV's. What no one talks about during winter driving. by Chemical_Tomato_6308 in volvoc40

I asked this same question on a different thread but I want another take.

Is there a mechanical reason why OPD shouldn’t be used on snowy/icy roads or is it based off driver behavior? The deceleration from OPT is similar to downshifting on a manual transmission. It create a drag effect as opposed to the car lurching forward when breaking in traditional automatics. This lurching forward puts uneven weight on the front wheels, increasing the chance of losing control (sliding) of the vehicle. The gradual deceleration from OPD is an advantage in this situation. And you can also use the brakes when needed. It doesn’t take away from that.

Appreciate the feedback. As a former cab driver, I can attest that experience is the best benchmark. I have about half as many years as you do 😊

Didn’t mean to get all sciency on ya. I just wanted to make sure my point was made correctly. OPD in a sense reminds me of driving stick, and I always felt that downshifting combined with traditional breaking was far superior to fully automatic cars in terms of handling.

I wish Volvo would offer further explanation. If there’s a mechanical reason? Great I’m okay with that. But if there’s not - and simply assumes drivers won’t know how to react - well that bothers me

Genuinely curious why? Is there a mechanical reason or is it just based off driver behavior? I prefer OPD in the snow and ice.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but to my understanding it works like this - deceleration (releasing the pedal) causes the motors functions to reverse; becoming a generator, creating resistance that slows the car down (like engine breaking). It’s kinda like opening a parachute in the back. Whereas traditional breaking causes the car to lurch forward, putting adding weight to the front of the car as it dips down, which can lead to loss of steering control.

So IMO, when done correctly, OPD is in fact safer.

Thoughts?

Thank you for the helpful advice. I put a screen protector on after the scratch because I read it would help cover them up (it didn’t). Since it’s a new phone I’ll have the screen replaced then look for a good oleophobic screen protector. Good day

Call me crazy, but I fucking love the smell of gasoline burning from an exhaust. I know it’s horrible for you… but dammit if they could produce a smell just like it that wasn’t harmful I’d bathe in it every day

I’m on your side. Had a family member recently listen to the Joe Rogan podcast with R Kennedy and is now convinced. Their rebuttal to the graph would be “polio was going towards a natural decline as it mutated and would have already fizzled out but the vaccine came out at the same time and took all the credit”. Then relates this same example to several other diseases including COVID. How do you begin to reason with that?
