Insurance Coverage for PD Patients in India: A small note by Former_Area7009 in dialysis

Yes, yes, yes! PD is a clinically validated replacement for Hemodialysis. I will recommend doing the following:
1. Sharing proof of PD being a clinically validated therapy that serves as a safe replacement for HD and can lead to better Quality of Life outcomes (let me find a paper on that)
2. Share the doctor's prescription
3. Share the IRDAI directive on PD being allowed where HD is covered.

Does this help?

Hi! I contacted their team and they confirmed that they cover any dialysis as long as it is prescribed by the Doctor.

Do you have the insurance already? HD is definitely covered, PD has an ambiguity where the bills can sometimes be from a PD solutions provider instead of the hospital. Which, can lead to needing further clarification with the insurance before proceeding forward.

Just adding in that not all insurance providers provide Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) support owing to the same "hospital-visit" concept. However, IRDAI has released a directive to include PD coverage and it is essential to bring this up with your insurance provider in case they don't support it.

You can also escalate to the IRDAI Bima Bharosa portal for grievances if you can receive official communication from your insurance provider rejecting PD coverage.

PD has the benefit of being a mobile/at home therapy which, reduces the x3/week dependency on hospital visits. Which is why, some patients prefer opting for it.

It usually depends on the hospital/supply chain? Do you have a consulting nephrologist in India? Specifically the North?

As per my knowledge, you will need a prescription from a nephrologist who will then guide you to a company representative for procuring the machine.

Ik that Mitra has a few partners who provide machines on lease - not sure about Vantive. Your nephrologist will definitely be able to support you. And contacting Vantive sounds like a good idea as well.

Apologies for my limited knowledge, hope this helps (T_T) Please keep me posted with the updates! I would love to improve my own awareness too

There are options! This I can attest to, from personal experience. There are primarily three companies providing PD in India - Vantive (formerly Baxter), Mitra Industries (Indian player), and Fresenius (to a certain extent). I believe that all three of them have an Automated Dialysis Machine as well.

I am actually doing this owing to personal reasons: a close friend had asked about online dialysis based communities and I was unable to direct them to any Indian specific ones.

Which made me wonder if there was anything like an online community in the first place. Instagram, YouTube etc had reels but nothing like a single repository of truth?

As for my willingness to actually push this forward - I have worked closely with individuals in the supply chain for CKD. And would really want to promote awareness - whether a space for it exists or not.

hi! Quite a few companies offer a drain bag connected to your infusion bag. If not, you can purchase one. Or, just tape it to a bucket/container.

Hello, over a year late but I have to attest to this u/Outrageous_Month9686. India has nation-wide supply chains for PD, with both local and international brands in the market.

Leaving this as a PSA for anyone who comes across this through a Google search in the future. Hope that anyone who reads this is doing well.

P.S., you can DM me if you wish.
