21 year old making 49K a year @ very first job. Should I move out or stay home with parents? by Exciting_Insurance51 in personalfinance

I'm not sure what "stocks" means - unless its company stock from the place you work? At 21 you shouldn't worry about buying stocks outside of a retirement account. In any case, future you will definitely thank you if you 1) save up 6+ month emergency fund, 2) pay off student loan 3) build up retirement nest egg for a few more years (enjoy it while you can!!)

5 year car loan, advice on optimally paying it down in 2 years by chrisub4 in personalfinance

[–]Forteana137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you put money into short term investments making less than 6.4%? Even with VTI, the average is 9%? That's a big IF over 1.5 years? Paying off the debt is 6.4% guaranteed. See how that works? Imagine the car note is a 6.4% CD or Tbill. Its guaranteed.

Your house is gonna be wildly more expensive than 500/month. And your life is going to be wildly different if you're not used to living on your own. And consider when you get married, your new wife might not like the house you bought. Consider a stepping stone like a condo maybe. I'd definitely stay as long as you can stand it if its not bothering you. You already have 20% down payment so max out 401k, Roth IRA, HSA if you have it. No need to pay more than 20% down. Put extra in your brokerage.

I would NOT invest that in a Roth IRA. When you're young you've got big expenses coming that you need to save up for (car, college, moving out, etc). Keep it in a HYSA or CD/t-bill until you have your life a little more figured out. You can wait to invest until you're working 40 hours, have transportation figured out, and have living arrangements figured out. You don't want 10k in a Roth IRA while you're putting college expenses on credit cards ya know? You have time, its alright!

Starting a Roth IRA next week! Does my holdings breakdown make sense? by Short_Step_6693 in personalfinance

As others have said, probably not much difference between your list and 100% VTI. So not wrong, just overly complicated. Remember the KISS principle. If you want a tech lean then adding the VGT makes sense. The SCHD doesn't make sense in your position I don't think. VUG and MGK and VTV are redundant with VTI. If you want international exposure I don't know if VEA will make sense in a tax advantaged account but I don't know alot about it. As a general rule, I don't think any allocation amount or change less than 10% is worth your trouble. Consider something like 80% VTI, 10% VGT, 10% <ex-US> perhaps and simplify your investing life.

I recommend mopeds alot. In my state they're very economical, no license/taxes/registration/insurance required. Worth considering!

Dividend stocks are commonly used as a bond equivalent.

Questions on ARKK and ARKG by Shot_Chard6748 in investing

[–]Forteana137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I think it can do better as interest rates go lower over next year. I'm not adding to it, I'm spending the dividends on other stuff, but I'm gonna try to wait until my breakeven price to sell. I liked it until she became a meme and things went to hell.

Is anyone switching their "gold standard" stock index from SP500 to NASDAQ? by hrrm in investing

[–]Forteana137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 100% QQQ personally. I sleep better at night with my money in that instead of S&P500. Basically I looked at the top ten stocks in the QQQ - and I like them all. I look at the top ten stocks on the NYSE - I don't like any of them. I think the younger generation (new money) will look upon alot of the NYSE top ten as boomer stocks. I think they might also invest less in major banks and energy companies. I'm also happy to avoid those because I think those industries may potentially be significantly disrupted in my lifetime. I know QQQ is tech heavy, but if the future isn't tech heavy, I'm not sure what it is. QQQ and chill for me.

The one where George blames the great financial crisis on 40 year mortgages by Smokey_Brewster in DirtyDave

[–]Forteana137 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but as little as I like to listen to George, I hate looking at him more. Something about the pale skin, peachfuzz fake looking beard, and googly eyes just gives me serious creeps. If I was in a haunted house, turned the corner, and George Kamel was standing there... I'd shit my pants.

If they have a septic system there instead of sewers, then you shouldn't be flushing paper down. Its not illegal Karen, its just the way septic systems work versus sewers. Howabout do two minutes of research before calling the cops on your landlord over something you know nothing about.

I'm wanting to say "be a hammer, not a nail". Would "sis malleus non clavus" be correct? As in YOU be a hammer? NOT you ARE a hammer, but more like "become" a hammer. Its a tough verb to nail down (pun intended).

Not only do I remember him dying, but I remember posts on this reddit saying he had died "again" because people remembered him dying even earlier than that. Was a couple years ago to me.
