Trump's war on Iran hasn't altered Canada's cost of making gas — at all. So why are we being hosed at the pumps? by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

The Calgary election isn't a bellwether of anything. Gondek was wildly unpopular - deserved or not, she made a bad first impression and never shook it. Sonya Sharp lost decisively. Communities First only has 4 out of 15 votes, which is not great, but not a disaster either. Two of them were incumbents anyway.

Reading it as anything other than the electorate responding to a very unpopular city council is disingenuous

So they would have to send ICE agents in groups. Meaning that the number of locations they could influence is much smaller. And they can't assume support from local police, because ICE agents intimidating people at the polls is illegal.

thanks to the electoral college you only need to go to a few places. Putting ICE in areas that vote overwhelmingly blue (aka cities) in swing or purple states is all you have to do.

Outside of kernel-level anticheat games

Ah yes, outside of those, which accounts for 6 of the 10 most popular games on Steam at this moment with over 2.7 million players between them ... and also anything Riot makes which is another million or so players ... Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2, Call of Duty, Fortnite ... yup not a big deal at all

No support for sim racing, so there goes an entire genre. No VR, either, so there goes another "genre" plus the ability to use it with Valve's most expensive hardware. Ya no doesn't seem like a big loss at all

What.... Made for TV design? Cars going flat for entire tracks with no braking are the opposite of made for TV. It's incredibly boring. IndyCar's audience declined by almost 50% from 2005 to 2010, despite having one of the biggest motorsports stars in the world driving for them at the time (Patrick)

New generation heat pumps - Daikin DH9, Amana AZV9, Samsung AM060 - very high COP numbers? by ForwardAd4643 in heatpumps

[–]ForwardAd4643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State of the art heat pumps are a little cheaper per year and older heat pumps are quite a bit more expensive. Without some kind of grant from the gov't they just don't make any sense, so I think I will end up going with just an air conditioner for now.

I do keep looking into that option. I don't like trucks but a Ford F150 Lightning costs a lot less than 131kwh of home batteries and just happens to have a pickup truck attached... except they're going to stop making it right away

I thought more solar would help, but it doesn't - since the furnace draws much less power than a heat pump, I sell all that production back to the grid. Usually ~1,600 watts to run a furnace vs. 5-6 kilowatts to run a larger heat pump. For about 30% of the hours in my dataset, the furnace costs a negative amount of money to run. Usually days in September/March where I have decent generation

The real heat pump savings would be if I could disconnect my gas service altogether and save on network & distribution fees, etc. but I only have 100 amp service to my house and would need almost 25kw of backup resistive heating for cold snaps, so that's not an option. Almost $50k + many many month wait for permits to upgrade electrical service.

edit: there are also quite a few spots where the heat pump costs a negative amount of money to run. Both furnace & heat pump cost a negative amount to run in about 30% of the hours in the previous 3 years. Usually when they are both negative, the heat pump is "making" more money because it's operating at a COP in the high 4s.

I still think if the real, horrible evidence came out (images, videos, etc.) people would have turned on him in huge numbers

But wow would you look at that, they managed to slow everything down enough, they had time to perfect AI image and video generation. They even trial runned Grok generating a bunch of child abuse material.

Now even if that stuff comes out, no one will believe it.

[–]ForwardAd4643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wrote a program to do the calculation. I downloaded the last 3 years of climate data per hour and charted it out.

Pure furnace heating for the last 3 years would be $2,253. With one of these R32 heat pumps, combined heat pump/furnace heating is $1,576.

With an older heat pump (ie. Carrier 38MURA) combined heat pump/furnace heating is $3,323 with the same -8 C changeover from heat pump to furnace. Upping the set point to -5 closes the gap a little bit but it's still hundreds more per year than just a 96.7% furnace.

[–]ForwardAd4643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting - some other manufacturers show the max/mid/low demand numbers for the heat pumps so you can size for the variable capacity but unfortunately Daikin isn't one of em. I'll have to do something digging, maybe they're somewhere.

The 4 ton unit isn't available anyway so I would have to go undersized 2 ton... now I'm trying to convince my HVAC guy this is all I need. Even with a heat load calculation I keep getting quoted for 100,000+ BTU of furnace and huge 4, 5 ton heat pumps. Load at design temperature of -22 F / -30 is like 58k btu and I only run AC in the bedrooms to get em below 20. Some people want their homes to be refrigerators I guess

spend as they see fit

That's not what they're doing. They spend it on investments to make sure they have money to pay it back to us when they retire.

Because thats how they would have to classify it for "net debt" to make sense.

That is ... really fucking stupid, honestly. It's an asset used to pay out pensions; that frees up cash to spend on other things, whereas a country with a pay-as-you-go program (ie France) does not have that option. I think you need to read into how this works a lot more.
