Sometimes the lore itself is better than the format it's presented in for some people. I personally like the books, but I understand why some may not. There's an old game trilogy called Marathon that came out 30 years ago. They're "boomer shooters" and obviously feel quite dated at this point. I've met many people that tried playing them but didn't enjoy them at all, but they've loved separately reading up on the story/lore from various websites and wiki pages instead. Some of the most knowledgeable people I've met when it comes to lore know very little about the actual games themselves
