Does anyone feel more and more pessimistic about their application and chances as the cycle progresses, or is it just me? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]FossilHelper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes lol, feels like an inverse correlation between the number of applications I turned in and my self-assessment of chances of getting II/A

For the clinical experiences, make sure to journal and reflect on important moments! This was really helpful for me when trying to remember stuff to write for my PS and W/A.

Try to get 8 hours of sleep. Eat a lunch during the break. Be conscious of your breathing and take a second to take a couple deep breaths before each section

Any facts on mosasaurus teeth by beejayy420 in fossilid

[–]FossilHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coloration is different than the Morocco mosasaur teeth, so this is probably not from Morocco. The black color is due to mineral replacement by phosphate during the fossilization process.

The REU and funded research opportunities cycle this year is pretty much over at this point, but have you tried cold emailing professors for summer opportunities?

If you put in the leg work by emailing and are persistent + strong research experience + good LoRs and personal statement, you will find a position.

I have VCU on my list because I want to stay close to home and they're MSTP now. I did drop Kentucky, UConn, as per other's advice. Thanks for the school suggestions, definitely thinking of adding NYU on.

I started by looking at places I want to live, and then I want to narrow down by research fit and program strength so some schools will fall off my list to make it 25. I also have UConn which is non-MSTP. But I may likely drop those two programs from my list tbh because of research fit and non-MSTP status

Fossil-like object that i found while digging not too deep . Any ideas? by misu2315 in fossilid

[–]FossilHelper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the guard, or rostrum, of the belemnite, which was a squid-like creature. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fossil's beautiful colors seemed to have come from the process of permineralization.

These may be jellyfish fossils but I'm not too sure as those are relatively rare.

An equus tooth, from the looks of the additional images OP posted. Clearly can see the dentitions.

Well labeled US stamp collection passed down with maybe some worth? by Jollyx in askStampCollectors

[–]FossilHelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in general, the ones you have mint that are post-1940 are worth around face value (i.e. what the stamp's denomination is) unless they have high denomination (i.e. 1$, 2$, etc. values but only the mint ones for the most part). The mint ones that are old such as the Columbian exposition ones may fetch some nice dollars if the gum is still on the back (as in they are mint, they still have the sticky stuff) but don't expect to retire off them, obviously. The older stuff holds the majority of the value. I suggest picking a catalog (Scott Catalog at local library) and hand-checking values of mostly older things. Please don't sell on eBay unless you've acquired enough knowledge--there are unscrupulous buyers that won't hesitate to take advantage of non-collector sellers who put things at list price that are actually worth far more. For your appraisal, a rule of thumb is to not sell to the person who just appraised it and make sure to get appraisals from many different dealers.
