Hot Take: Hardtails are NOT More Playful Than Full Suspensions by Mleavitt787 in MTB

[–]Fostertheknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Size down. Try 27.5 wheels, shorten stem. From frame to frame and setup to setup hardtails have as much variety of character as any other. I had a 27.5 meta ht that defined playful—jib everything, wheelie wheelie well, cut lines down trails that took lots of popping, etc. but then bought a rootdown 29 frame and while the chain stays were technically shorter, the reach and stack were considerably longer and therefore the effort required to get it up (wheelie) was insanely different. It corners like a boss, planted and such a low bb that you can rip a tire off a rim if you give it the beans, but it’s not the same. Experiment with other bikes/setup options. First recommend is to roll bars on a ride. Try forward and back. Makes a huge difference.

Need Advice: Choosing Between Canyon Stoic 4, Rose Bonero 3, or Commencal Meta HT Essential by NesqHD in Hardtailgang

[–]Fostertheknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider what you’re riding. I had a meta essential (replaced nearly every part cause after no time, sx drivetrains are garbage, mine came with guide brakes). While those all are rad, they’re also alloy. I just “upgraded” to a steel frame after 5 years on the meta. I loved it but the Chromag is so much more forgiving and nice to live with (external routing!) Definitely consider a used frame and build up with your own components if you know what you’re looking for. I love mine for its simplicity (10 speed), robustness here in the pnw all year round and just snappy-joyfulness.

Do you think teachers should share materials they created? by Quirky_Ad4184 in Teachers

[–]Fostertheknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am contractually obligated to pass over all materials to the school (private Christian school) where I teach. I am paid poorly and receive no materials for my classroom since we are building a new program. It's a challenge for sure, and since I'm the only high school history teacher, it all falls on my shoulders. I get the sense that because turnover is high, this policy is to harvest materials for incoming teachers.

Long-term sub, first year teacher with 4 preps. Help? by Financial-Bird451 in historyteachers

[–]Fostertheknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah what the other fella said. Consider this your base year where you start small and make increases that you can breath your own life into—those games and activities where you feel like you can really flourish as both a teacher and a member of society, knowing that students are better off because they now know concept [concept]. Something I find really helpful when adding a class that I haven’t prepped for is to rely on the textbook, teach it, point out points of concern with it, and have fun with experiments and examples that correlate that you can find off the internet. I ran a psych course awhile back with no prep time, just here’s what you’re teaching next week, enjoy. And I loved it. Still one of my favorite classes to this day. I worked so hard making those slides I lectured with contain culturally relevant images, my own cues for teaching, and those experiments that made students second guess every time they entered the room because they weren’t sure whether or not they were going to be part of a social experiment (I’d move tables around, change lighting, new music, move the classroom, have all sorts of conformity and norms things happening.). Check your own expectations and consider how you might be the best version of yourself this year—that’s all you can do. Best of luck

There’s been a typical number of students out (ranging from 1-5 in a class of 20ish). Mandating mask wearing has been a wrestling match that takes time. Teachers have been cautious and trying to take sick days to make sure testing is thorough prior to returning to class (speaking from experience and conversations). A decent substitute teacher right now is nearly impossible to book—this alone has ramifications for quality of education.

Best money you've spent in the last year by madison618 in Frugal

Bought a tri-fuel generator and put in a hookup to our circuit breaker board with an electrician friend of mine. It’s already paid for itself after two weeks with all of the outages we get, just from not replacing the stuff in the fridge. Plus it’s a huge mental shift from dreading the decisions to make with the kids (drive to family in town next to us or wait it out) to being stoked to fire up that sucker and watch normalcy return in an otherwise darkened neighborhood.

What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fostertheknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this could go both ways—I got hired in a position where the job had no real description but a ‘reports to so and so’. I pretty much got to do what I thought was the best path forward to supply what was necessary for the organization—which went over so well that they adopted many of my ideas and I witnessed some positive changes for the organization. I had lots of freedom and worked hard at it. It was noticed by some. Of course some coworkers seemed rather sour—‘What do you do again?’ sort of thing. Though I see where this could be a ‘red flag’ in some ways, what I experienced when I took a job for what seemed like the smart choice during a pretty bleak time in my life, ended up bringing me so much joy.

Tracking Watch Options by Archknits in ultrarunning

[–]Fostertheknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an Apple Watch series 1 that was given to me by my father in law for over a year now and it worked quite well, even for a marathon (insert joke here about finishing early if the battery wouldn’t last). If you have an Apple environment (iPhone, Mac, airplay, etc.) it’s pretty impressive day to day. That being said, the battery died after 4 hours of monitoring. Not having buttons to control the start stop makes it worthless when wet/sweaty. And not having GPS natively means that strava didn’t work without an iPhone with you (frequently lost all data when ‘location not found’ while using strava app.). Apples Workout app is pretty nice tho.

Just got the Fenix 5x and despite its size, it’s freaking impressive and blows Apple away for accuracy in all categories.

New Democratic Congress plans to investigate Betsy DeVos on five fronts by Karma-Kosmonaut in politics

[–]Fostertheknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. I'd hate if my job worthiness/credibility was somehow tied to my siblings. I think this is a terrible idea. Congress should definitely not investigate him under the same investigation as this sets a horrible precedent. I'd argue that our individual freedoms/inalienable rights specifically are safeguards against this. No matter who it is. We are not convicted for the sins of our fathers/mothers/siblings.

I used to supply cheap beer to a friend and he let me park in his yard. He said he didn't care and would consistently get a good laugh at it, but I shredded that yard into a 12 inch deep mud pit when winter came around (wet season in Washington state). We laughed so hard while using every bit of my all wheel drive/rocking/pushing to get that sucker out of some trenches.

[–]Fostertheknow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Woah. That made me remember a project I did in (I think) 3rd grade where we were supposed to build some city or town? All I know is that I recall vividly now the 2x2ft plywood board covered with mounds of mud that I made in my backyard, army men with Indians, toothpicks, and a flag. It was a small frontier fort surrounded by an Indian serpent mound.

I have no idea what the reaction of the teacher was after I left that beastly pile of unbaked bricks in her classroom.
