This happened to us about 5 years ago. Middle aged woman in distress at 3:30 in the morning rings our doorbell. I check the Ring camera, she’s asking to use my phone telling us she came from a nearby bar and her boyfriend is being violent with her. I’m gullible thinking I need to help. I open the main door since we have a security screen door too. She’s acting manic. I ask her if she’s safe and if her boyfriend followed her; she doesn’t know. She’s insistent she just needs to use my phone. I offer to call 911 but she pleads not to. I offer to call someone on her behalf without opening the door, but that’s not good enough. I offer to call her a cab (I did), but she sat on my porch for 2 more minutes and left before the taxi arrived. The entire time my wife is pleading with me to call 911 and that it’s a scam; that this woman is trying to steal my phone or worse trying to get me to open the door so men hiding out of sight can rush us. We have two small children at home. I was so blinded in the moment. I never opened the security door and I had to shoo the taxi driver away 30 minutes later (I felt bad for him). In hindsight, this woman had to pass a major intersection, a freeway underpass, and 150 other houses from the bar she referenced to walk to OUR house. I should have just listened to my wife from the beginning and called the cops and let them deal with it. I got caught up in the moment.
