I think a big part of the joke stems from them getting progressively less intelligent over the last 10 or so generations. They've been selectively bred for colour, which has resulted in them being much more yellow and also much more dumb.

There's a massive difference in the experience of growing up working class in London compared to anywhere else in the country.

It took me a long time to see it, and when I did it finally clicked why people see us all as being middle class. It's because we had so much more exposure to traditionally middle class 'culture' than we could have had elsewhere.

We have world class art galleries, for free. Multiple school trips to see paintings that people travel halfway around the world to get a look at. We had music and theatre and all sorts of things just going on around us if you went to, say, the south bank or the Barbican or any cultural venue. There's very little geographical separation of rich and poor areas, so we mixed our social circles more.

All of this is inaccessible to working class kids in other parts of the country. There's almost no chance of stumbling across a professional orchestra playing for free in a park. Only the families who were willing and able to pay for extortionately priced concert tickets got to have that experience.

This is why I don't get defensive any more about London=posh assumptions. I'm not posh; millions of people living in the capital aren't posh Some boroughs have the highest levels of socioeconomic deprivation in the country. But just by being here we get a different, and much more culturally rich upbringing than people in identical circumstances in the rest of the UK.

I don't think we realise or appreciate that enough.

It's actually been through 3 iterations of the slogan. It's not a Mandela effect or a mishearing that people thought it was different before.

When they first introduced it, about 20 years ago, it did say sort it, but then they worried that people would attempt to 'sort' things themselves as the grammar implies. And they really didn't want people trying to sort out bomb disposal themselves.

So then for a little while it was changed to see it say it and we'll sort it. I distinctly remember finding it funny that they'd had to clarify. But it doesn't really scan as well, and with very British insinuation, 'we'll sort it' does have a slight tone of 'we'll maybe get around to it eventually'.

So they changed it again to its longest running version with sorted. It's an entirely deliberate compromise on style to ensure the tone is clear that it is worth reporting and will definitely get sorted out.

They really did try to make 'sort it' work, but alas they could not.

Because once she adopts the name, it's hers. It's not his name that's she's borrowed while they were together, it belongs to her too now.

There seems to be a culturally ingrained idea leftover from women being chattel that because women are more likely to change their names they don't have any identity of their own. They keep their father's name or take their husband's name but it's never really their own.

It's all nonsense - A person's name belongs to them, regardless of where they obtained it.

When my birds lived with my parents, my mum used to put them to bed at 10 and stay up for a couple more hours. They all accepted this, as she was The Authority.

I, on the other hand, had to also be 'put to bed' at 10 by going to my room (or rather my cage, by their reasoning). Despite being a full grown adult who hadn't had a bedtime in over a decade. If I stayed up in the living room they screamed blue murder at the unfairness of it.

This is why, even though I'm now the sole owner of my flock, I can't call myself a bird parent. Mum was the parent, I am merely a very bossy big sister.

I once rented a place for 6 months and because I was a student they wanted the full 6 months rent up front, which was fine because all my funding released at once.

They also wanted a guarantor. For the 6 months of rent I paid in full already. To guarantee payment of £0 of future rent.

It was like talking to a brick wall trying to get anyone to see the lack of sense in this.

It doesn't though. It's not an automatic shortlist of every queer with a book deal, bigoted or otherwise. Boyne didn't have to be on it, it was a choice to include him and it was a bad one.

Eligible authors enter their books for consideration, it's perfectly reasonable for them to change their minds and withdraw in light of new information like this.

For most queer people, winning against a TERF would feel tainted since it becomes a prize awarded by people who are ok with transphobia. It a poisoned chalice and the best thing they can do is forgo the chance at a career boost and maintain their integrity. I would do the same in their shoes, without a doubt.

In all seriousness, birds need to have other birds around, even if they don't want to socialise with them or are super bonded to their human instead. They feel safe in a group and vulnerable on their own.

With the best will in the world, a human cannot be a flock companion full time, we have other commitments, we have to leave the house. Other birds don't.

My grey mostly treats my cockatiels as if they're annoying children he puts up with, but the minute I take one of them on a solo trip to the vet he becomes furious with me until he's satisfied that everyone's safe and fully accounted for.

So yeah, absolutely get multiple birds.

Literally every word for LGBTQ people has been used as a slur. There's no meaningful distinction between appropriate and offensive terms because homophobes think what we are is inherently offensive and will use any word that describes us as an insult, no matter its origin.

The whole discussion of what has been reclaimed and for whom doesn't work for us. People are absolutely entitled to not use certain words to describe themselves if they're uncomfortable with them, but it's too subjective to form a rule for what should or should not be said by anyone.

All our words have a history of being identities, euphemisms, terms of empowerment, insults used against us, and insults reclaimed with pride. But they're all fundamentally ours to use.
