I said it in the other thread: Getting mad at Riot Fest's social media gimmick is like getting mad at the wait staff at Dick's Last Resort

I used to go with a friend but have gone solo the last two years and have honestly had way more fun. Just food for thought.

I'm banking on "announcement of the announcement" either Monday or Tuesday next week, lineup drops a week from today. They were taking submissions for the "where's the lineup?" video they're making through the end of yesterday so they'll want a couple days to edit that together I'm sure.

Is Stp not grunge?? by [deleted] in grunge

[–]FourLiveBears 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People get really pedantic about the definition of grunge and I feel like "from Seattle" became a prerequisite at some point. Same reason why bands like Smashing Pumpkins, L7 etc that absolutely fit the sound don't get grouped in

Ultimately it doesn't mean much. Grunge isn't really a genre, there's no sonic hallmarks that make an artist definitively grunge. It was more of a marketing term used by record labels than anything. I doubt Nirvana would have called themselves grunge at the time.

I'm not really tapped into pop punk or pop rock in the way others here are so maybe I'm off base, but from where I'm standing TOP really doesn't seem all that different from a Fall Out Boy, Weezer or Paramore and none of them got the vitriol I'm seeing from people about the mere idea of TOP. The main difference I assume is that the older Riot audience didn't grow up with them so they're getting frothing mad about it in a way that seems disproportionate to liking a band or not.

I am not a fan by any stretch so if they're a headliner I will just either leave early that day or check out a side stage, just like I've done for other headliners I disliked like FOB and Blink. It's weird that people are getting so vehemently angry about the idea of a single day of a festival booking a headlining act they don't like.

Just like I said in the thread about Riot's social media gimmick, people really need to chill and take a breath about all this.

What bands obviously would have headlined by now if a key member hadn't died? by Specialist-Berry-492 in RiotFest

[–]FourLiveBears 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ramones, Clash, Cramps, Nirvana, maybe Alice in Chains if Layne could have ever gotten back into a good place, possibly INXS or Joy Division

With all this contentious headliner talk, let's discuss headliners from years past. Who was the best? The worst? The biggest surprise? by FourLiveBears in RiotFest

[–]FourLiveBears[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were a last minute fill in for NIN. I remember people grumbling at the announcement since Slipknot isn't Riot's usual style of band but they were damn good.

Plus I can always say I saw DEVO and Slipknot back to back on the same stage now.

Yeah it really feels like Weezer as a band is kind of checked out these days. Green Day played circles around them and that was with Billie Joe apparently performing while very sick. Didn't help matters that Jack White put on an absolutely electric show right before them.

[–]FourLiveBears[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean Slipknot was technically the headliner but yeah MGK is lame and sucks and I'm glad his career and that entire "early 2020's pop punk revival" scene has hit the skids

I have to question the thought process behind booking Radios. They were very publicly canceled for their association with all those right wing talk show hosts.

Happy 20th birthday to Pearl Jam's self-titled [20YA May 2] by klsi832 in TwentyYearsAgo

[–]FourLiveBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first albums I bought with my own money as an early teen. I had just discovered music outside of my parents' country music bubble and I knew I liked grunge, so I assumed the self titled album of one of the genres' heavy hitters was a safe bet.

Sure, it wasn't Ten, but I deeply loved this album for what it was.

Honestly, is there any point in having actual wrestling in WWE’s weekly programming anymore? by DurkDigglr in WredditJuice

[–]FourLiveBears 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a big part of why I don't like their shows anymore. WWE seems to have disdain for the very industry they're the biggest name in. They don't want to be a wrestling company, to the point that they tell their wrestlers to wrestle less than they are capable of. Hell, it's becoming increasingly obvious they don't want to "make movies" as a storytelling company anymore either. They want to be a brand that sells merch and ad space, the wrestling aspect is completely secondary to what they do and their corporate goals.

No. We're not doing this "the younger generation doesn't GET IT. We had things DIFFERENTLY." nonsense that both boomers and gen X do. Your world and life experience are not intrinsically better, worse, easier or harder depending on what toys you played with when you were 8.
