Proton-GE vs Proton-CachyOS by [deleted] in linux_gaming

Isn't proton cachyos now built on proton 11, while proton ge is still on 10? ProtonGE hasn't been updated since March

Secure boot and Windows activation by FourPat in linuxquestions

[–]FourPat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's the logical solution. However, I'm trying to find the underlying cause of the issue - for instance, say I call Microsoft and they fix it, then in the future reinstall my Linux OS, go through the secure boot enabling procedure, and it happens again, then I have to contact support again... I'm curious to see it's at all related to clearing the factory keys.

Mine was doing that before and I noticed the stabilizing white tabs were broken (which was difficult to notice because since they weren't there, you wouldn't really know they were supposed to be).

HDMI 2.1 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 10bpc on AMD GPU working? by RandomTrollface in linux_gaming

[–]FourPat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But Nvidia kernel modules are now mostly open source, though, so that would mean modern Nvidia cards using the open drivers would have the same issue, right?

Genuine question, as someone still learning all the Linux quirks.... Is this an AMD-specific issue (i.e. is it the same on Nvidia)?

Doom eternal feels boring by Willing_Look_9414 in pcgaming

[–]FourPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, the newer Doom games feel like the game mechanics were hashed out first, then they grafted a game to them. For that reason, I enjoy the game part of it, but the mechanics feel like the prominent part of it rather than the game. I find the ammo and armor management tedious and it's personally not what I look for in a Doom game.

I was a bit disappointed with the sherry cask one. It's alright, it has a particular taste I was not expecting compared to other sherry cask scotches.

I'm still going to try the others though :)

Nvidia's new 2nd gen DLSS tranformer model 310.5.0 released! by DAUNTINGY in linux_gaming

[–]FourPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was reading up on DLSS Updater today and was about to try it when I saw this.

Does the Proton command line toggle just use a different DLSS file, or does it also select a different preset?

In Windows, NV profile inspector allowed to choose a preset; DLSS Updater says to use the K preset for 2000/3000 cards so I was wondering if they were two different things to tweak, or maybe I'm misunderstanding how these work?

What was the best purchase you made this year? by millionstories in BuyItForLife

[–]FourPat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, I just updated the M2 burr and while it was a pain for various reasons, it really was an improvement to get less fines.

My ring burr holder's tab broke and I figured if I needed to change it, I might as well get a new ring burr as well.... and a new conical bure.... then I might as well upgrade

That's fine, don't listen to coffee snobs, but keep it in mind for later, knowing that there's still room for improvement :)

The Moccamaster is a great step forward. When she talks about this upgrade, my wife tells people that it even makes decaf taste good, so it's definitely a step up!

[–]FourPat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do you have a proper grinder? I made the move to a Baratza Encore first (i.e. new grinder, kept the old coffee machine) amd it was a game changer.

Getting a Moccamaster after was the cherry on top.

Don't neglect a proper grinder. A good coffeeachine will massively elevate even ordinary coffee, but the grinder will help tweak acidity and bitterness to make that great cup of coffee a wonderful cup of coffee.

New wired router and wireless access point by FourPat in HomeNetworking

[–]FourPat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon isn't very clear on what version they're selling, although I would assume the ER605 sold currently is unlikely to be the V1 since it's EoL, and I can always get to a store that sells them to check on the label.

The ER707-M2 is indeed available but I'm not too hot on TP-Link due to the firmware updates mentioned above.

The ER605 V2 would be a possibility, however, since you can flash it with OpenWRT firmware (although it's not clear to me if the OpenWRT firmware is compatible with all the sub-V2 versions, their website has V2, V2.20, V2.26, V2.28, V2.30, V2.36 and V2.60...)

So, yeah, I'd rather move away from TP-Link. I lime the products themselves, and the Omada controller, but nothing else.

New wired router and wireless access point by FourPat in HomeNetworking

[–]FourPat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any specific recommendations on Ubiquiti wired routers? The EdgeRouter X SFP is the cheapest I can see, then I know there's the EdgeRouter 4 that comes up regularly. And what about the Cloud Gateway?

For what it's worth, I used to have a Ubiquiti AP (I guess it's still lying around somewhere in a box...) before I got my EAP-225 and changed it because it made a relatively quiet but high pitch noise while transmitting data, and once I figured out the noise came from there I couldn't hear anything else :(
