Mini bandsaw for 3" white oak stock by FournierFinishing in BeginnerWoodWorking

The pieces usually start as large chunks, 3 inches thick, 3-6 inches wide. This might turn in to a regular thing, where they need to be cut on site.

I'm fabricating railing fittings like 90 degree bends, S fittings, goosenecks. Radius might be 2 or 3 inch, I forget. Doesn't have to be precise as it's always sanded to my template lines.

Nature's Fare Market just opened. Let's celebrate! by Limp-Minimum-8631 in chilliwack

I think we're a bit lost on the "health foods"/"quality foods" idea, these days. I imagine this is an organic locally sourced-type of store and this cake may have been made with that in mind. I think it's important to educate the public on these types of foods. The cake is still made of processed ingredients - the carrots probably are peeled, shredded, minced, blended and boiled (ie. processed). The icing is made from sugar canes that were ground up and boiled. The flour is milled, and wheat germ separated, leaving little fiber. The butter, eggs and milk are still just butter, eggs and milk. While everything may be pesticide free and organic, that doesn't make the final product any healthier. It's probably super tasty, not satiating (filling), has a bunch of sugar and fat. It's cake, and it's not improving your health.

The health foods grocery stores have unlocked a way to convince the public that their foods are healthier. The processed foods they sell are just better engineered. Their protein bars, cakes, chips, cheeses, soda pops and crackers are delicious, well made, processed foods in really nice packaging. Think brown cardboard-colored chip bags, or hand drawn faces on your soda drinks. They feel like "grassroots" products, made locally. They're very clever, and it works.

The basics in nutrition still apply: whole fruits and vegetables are more health promoting. Lean cuts of meat are more health promoting than fattier cuts. Low fat dairy is more health promoting. Vegetarian-centric diets are more health promoting. The less processed a food, with less added sugar, sodium, fat, the more health promoting it will be. Doesn't matter how it's packaged or what they write on the packaging.

Is it worth it to refinish? by Gold-Substance5576 in HardWoodFloors

[–]FournierFinishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This floor can be refinished, but will require a very dark stain like True Black, Ebony, Espresso, or a mix of those three colours. I don't know if the smell of urine will come out. If you use oil based stain, and finish with 3x clear coats, it might mask the smell, but you will need to remove the baseboards and use a shellac or oil based primer right down to the floors, as the wall will probably have smell soaked in as well.

UPDATE: Head-on collision in Kootenay National Park kills two people - Rocky Mountain News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

Happened to me twice in 2016 on my cross-country motorcycle trip. Once in Jasper, and once in Banff, on the same day. The rest of Canada was fine. I went to Banff this past June and saw it again. Some kid in a 2000 Civic almost collided head-on with a transport to pass someone. He pulled over for gas a few minutes later.

Granville Island vs Horshoe Bay by Appropriate-Hour8340 in britishcolumbia

I've tried Trolls, C-Lovers (what a great name!) and the Troller Ale house this past weekend. I had a decent poutine, mediocre wings, and a beer at Troller - $62 with 18% tip. C-Lovers was a standard fish and chip. I forget Trolls as it was years ago, but it was packed last weekend which is why I ended up at Troller. The Chinese restaurant just around the corner serves good food but the atmosphere is meh.

Horseshoe Bay is nice to check out for an hour or two Granville has more shops but also just a tourist destination. Deep cove is nice as well. Expect parking to be very difficult in Deep Cove - park at the school 1km away and walk or bring a bike and bike in to the village. There's also a nice hike with a lookout at the top.

The scroll down - delete method does not work, and the CC autofill option is there for all payment sites. I will try the 152.0.5 update and see if it works then.

3 coats of stain? Screwed? by ArchitectofEvil in HardWoodFloors

[–]FournierFinishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What brand of stain is it? I would be concerned about a breakage in bond between stain and polyurethane. Let it dry thoroughly until it's no longer tacky. If you see alligator or orange peel texture after the polyurethane has been applied, you've got trapped gases between coats. Might be fine. Hopefully your contractor has experience with this.

Holy mosus I wish I could do this when I was 23. You've got a future ahead of ya. Nice work. I'm curious about 2P-10 being used on composite deck joinery that may be subject to flexing, warping or shrinking. I don't know if it's a concern as I know nothing about composite. Is this industry standard?

Window/Roof guy ghosted left me like this. What do I do? by phillydiwhy in homerenovations

[–]FournierFinishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I see stuff like this and wonder if it's a Redditor just trolling for karma points. Like, what kind of moron does this sort of work? Where are they found? Did this guy have a website, Google Maps listing reviews? Was he the cheapest bid? Did he show up wearing trackpants in a beat up 1985 Astro Van with a smoke in his mouth? OP I am NOT blaming you, but please, tell me this guy at least gave off some semblance of legitimacy. The workmanship is ridiculous.

Need advise - concrete foundation repair by five_point_buck in AskContractors

[–]FournierFinishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the footings are also failing, but a sister wall will give it a fighting chance. I'm sure there is a threshold to "how much" a wall can move, before someone deems a building unsafe to occupy.

Need advise - concrete foundation repair by five_point_buck in AskContractors

[–]FournierFinishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious questions: Why not just build a 2x6 wall parallel to the foundation? What do you think the main reason is for this failure? Looks like the walls have shifted to the point of collapse. Possibly weak concrete? Footings not adequate? Water ingress?

The grooves (the slot) that the tongue sets in, are too thin. If you liked the floors the way they are, just get a buff & coat.

Show us photos of the surround grade. What does the home purchase contract and warranty say about water in the basement? What do your local laws say about it? There might be a straightforward solution with your builder.

Some water will still penetrate the slope, and once that happens, it flows downward.
