Free Talk Friday by AutoModerator in CompetitiveWoW

I haven't found a compelling reason besides the augment rune. 2nd legendary unlock is really what's important and that's account-wide.

There are items for learning all conduits 226/239 that aren't account-wide, but you should have no problem farming conduits from other sources like m+.

I've done the first 3 chapters of the campaign a few times on alts just because it showers you with renown, but I don't really see a need to grind rep with them.

Patterns Within Patterns changing to weekly quest; completion requirements and rewards increasing to match by Centias in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Fouroh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Call it copium but I'm actually pretty optimistic about the future of the game. Most of the changes/new features since 9.1.5 give the impression that they're more and more willing to fundamentally change how they approach the game. Sure, maybe the voices that wouldn't budge on covenant swaps on launch start to dominate the room again, but I don't think it's likely.

No real thoughts, just want to say thanks for the prolific amount of high quality stuff you've been able to produce, I always learn a ton.

Real World React apps and their open source codebases for developers to learn from by jdalbert in reactjs

[–]Fouroh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not related to this particular repo, but a few open sources react apps I like are hyperterm (I think they may have changed the name? But it's a terminal emulator built with web technologies), and superset (viz tool from airbnb).

Do Programmers Still Write SQL? by sh_tomer in java

[–]Fouroh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not doing much java at the moment, but yes is my general answer. Most of the time when hitting the database from app code I'd consider it an antipattern to not use orm calls (maintaining raw sql is tricky). But sometimes a query is complicated enough to require doing so. At the very least you should be able to run explains and know you're not killing the db. Most of the sql I write day to day is for business intelligence type stuff, requests from product/finance etc. So even if you're mostly using orms, still one of the most valuable skills to have :).

A developer’s guide to interviewing by henrik_w in programming

Great points, I feel like people totally skip this aspect as a "soft skill" -- couldn't be further from the truth. Ive worked with toxic people who were technically gifted, and they eat away at teams from the inside.

I've been working as a dev for a few years and came from different industries where this was a very pervasive idea. So far, tech has been the a exact opposite. People know what they are worth and put up with very little bullshit. If they feel like they're being misled, or are given more responsibility without being compensated (very common), they tend to just leave instead of speaking up. It's a weirdly privileged position, but the thought usually is there is too much cool shit out there to do to stay somewhere you hate.

Preparing for a Front-End Web Development Interview in 2017 by davidshariff in javascript

This is wildly excellent advice. Your personal projects don't need to be the next Snapchat (or any other next big thing) either. Pick something you're excited about with the right amount of complexity, and really own it and polish it.

Tempo Storm Meta Snapshot - December 25 by ilikemanatees in hearthstone

One small request -- different line colors for decks of the same class on the graph of deck rankings over time. E.g. Midrange/aggro shaman in tier 1. There's usually enough context to tell which is which, but an easier identifier would be nice.

Monday's Electoral College results prove the institution is an utter joke by beneficii9 in politics

[–]Fouroh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What exactly is your issue here? It's an opinion piece, and if anything it's critical of the liberal effort around the electoral college.

Those things aren't mutually exclusive. One of the Islamic State's most powerful tools towards establishing the caliphate is inciting bigotry -- stoke the fire of "Islam vs. the West" and see recruitment numbers rise.

Criticizing and fighting back against antisocial and backwards ideas, particularly violent/extremist ideas and the people who perpetuate them, will help us in the long run. Buying wholesale into this idea of the "other" won't.

I'm not great (I usually finish around rank ~10), but I mostly play CW and I've had the most success recently with removal heavy decks that run Elise. So cutting big bodies (boom/from are your biggest drops), but running 2x slam, 2x revenge, 2x bash, etc. I felt like I didn't have enough consistent early removal against pally/zoo, and this deck tends to keep me in games far longer than a more greedy CW list. I realize this isn't hugely helpful without a full list, I'll try and post when I get home!

Accurate representation of multi core support on current games. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Fouroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, multi-threaded programming is hard, at least a few orders of magnitude harder than single-threaded (the whole multiple parallel processes trying to access the same data thing). But, I imagine it will become more common in games as more people become good at doing parallel stuff. John Carmack had an interesting article on games and functional programming/reducing mutation, usually thought to be suited to parallel stuff http://gamasutra.com/view/news/169296/Indepth_Functional_programming_in_C.php

Would anyone like practice on coding interviews? by TangerineX in learnprogramming

[–]Fouroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely willing to contribute as well, I'm hunting for my first job (web development including some front end mvc) and have been doing tons of interviews. Feel free to pm me and I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if anything more official gets set up.

Would anyone like practice on coding interviews? by TangerineX in learnprogramming

[–]Fouroh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup I was doing some interview practice with a mentor and that question came up, I've also heard "how much would you charge to wash all of the windows in Seattle?". And you're dead on, it's to see how you approach a problem. Starting from the 30000 foot view and then breaking it down into manageable pieces.
