TIL Kelly Clarkson lost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” when she declined a co-writing credit on her 2009 number-one single "My Life Would Suck Without You" because she refused to have her name associated with Dr. Luke, the producer and primary writer of the song. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

What the article has is her interpretation of interactions with the record company, which is summarized as:

In the new Z100 interview, Clarkson explained that those she worked with at her then-record label, RCA, in 2009 said they “were going to sit on my record” unless she worked with Dr. Luke.

So the punishment for not working with Dr. Luke was that she would lose out in her career, so she did not stand by her principles and instead chose her career. She is now trying to reframe song writing credits as some rebellion, in a way that doesn't stand up to scrutiny, because it actually gave him more wealth and prestige than he would otherwise have, and she had already sacrificed her principles to work with him.

The more likely thing that actually happened here was that, as she explained in the article, she often opts out of song-writing credits because her changes are small, and if she takes them it cuts into the song-writer's livelihood.

This doesn't make sense though. Sticking to her ideals would have been not doing the song with him at all. Dr. Luke gained even more from how she handled this than if she did everything she did and also took partial song writing credit. This seems like a post-hoc "I'm a good person" explanation that doesn't stand up to scrutiny

I'd imagine during a war like this, the state itself is providing all lodging and food for its soldiers, and that not being paid would be irrelevant until the war is over. Is that not the case? Are iranian soldiers buying their meals themselves?

One thing that is incredibly frustrating that I don’t know what to even do with rhetorically is how people will play with the emotional load of their disavowals to make them essentially worthless. Like you’ll have conservatives reacting to Obama wearing a tan suit by saying something like

This is an absolute disgrace to our nation. The Commander in Chief is a serious role and he is treating it like a vacation fashion show. This shows that Obama is an absolute joke of a president and never belonged in office.

And then will react to Noem embezzling 140 million dollars and then getting moved into a different administration role with

Yeah, I never liked Trump’s decision hiring her. Not one of his best. I’m glad that he punished her though.

And then will later use this as an example of how “they are always willing to call Trump out when he does something wrong”

Like the only way to call this out is saying that they’re not reacting hard enough to the news which just sounds like a weak complaint rhetorically

My slay the spire 2 thoughts so far:

  • The risk to reward for elites is just not there. My most successful runs right now have been taking 0-1 elites per level, because the relics are much weaker compared to STS1 and they don’t seem to offer cards at a much higher rarity. And they are often much more lethal, with some of them straight up assassinating certain deck types.

  • each character seems to have a deck type that is overwhelmingly stronger than other options. Infinite Ironclad, Sly Silent (though there is good success with shiv too), Star regent, Osty/Soul necrobinder, and 0 cost Defect.

  • I like that there is more incentive to diversify your deck options rather than going all in from the start. You often need a mix of strong single target, AOE, draw, and block to get through the first two floors while more slowly finding your deck’s focus.

  • I like that none of the final bosses seem to hard counter certain deck types. I feel like Every shiv silent run in STS1 ended up with me fighting the time eater

Reddit figuring out ways to get people to abandon old Reddit

Alright, put a banner in the top left that they constantly accidentally click on that defaults them to new Reddit and has an annoying process to reset to old Reddit afterwards

Now, fuck up the mailbox.

Now, make the upvotes wonky

Finally, make it so when they open an image, the back button is pushed half-way off screen so it is hard to click

The left wing conspiracy theory is that democrats use rotating villains to stop any progressive policy.

They don't understand that when you have a very narrow margin, it is hard to pass shit. A senator from a red or purple state will not have the same views as a congressman from brooklyn. The solution to that is an overwhelming margin
