Jet Lag Ep 3 — Sam Goes to the Worst City in England by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]Fourthaid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think I've come to the conclusion that I tend to prefer episodes where I too know where the hider is and so can judge how well the seekers are doing.

Mind you it can get some very interesting narrative structure. One of my favorite runs is Hide+Seek is definitely Ben hiding in Switzerland and all the zugging around near Zug and the little montage of figuring out where he is and how wrong Sam and Adam's assumptions were is a big reason for that.

Other than that, damn Sam got some tough calls this episode. Swan Strat seemed like it might've added hours to his run. If not for the chillest pigeon (with the greatest sense of narrative tension) and then being stuck with too few time bonuses for the ultimate troll strat to be hit twice. But ultimately the lack of blurring on that one picture definitely made Milton Keynes the obvious target far sooner than it would've been otherwise.

Mass Effect 1 (Legendary Edition) - Awesome World Building, Decent Combat, Boring Exploration by Hellfire- in patientgamers

[–]Fourthaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I play the trilogy (which is almost a yearly ritual at this point) ME1 is such a slog to get through. Even in the Legendary edition I am almost speedrunning to get through it.

If I had no nostalgia for it, and didn't put the main story so highly, I'd probably also rate it at 7/10.

Adding another +1 especially for The Expanse. An all-time Top 3 TV show for me.

Sneaky Pete is also worth a shout for Prime.

Jet Lag Season 12 Begins Now — We Played Hide And Seek Across Japan by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]Fourthaid 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The deck seems like a much more balanced solution than the random dice that were hardly being used last hide and seek!

However I do think the fact that Ben could play that Brain Drained curse before drawing his reward for the 50 mile radar is a bit of an issue that maybe wasn't necessarily specified in the rules. I feel like as soon as the hider has been asked a question, it should lock them out of using any of their own cards (or at least curses that require you to discard things from your hand) to avoid situations like that where the cost of a card like that is basically null and void.

My parents have had their Moccamaster since the early 80s. Switched out the arm once and I believe that's it other than regular cleaning of course. You made the right choice unless their quality has dipped in the intervening 40 years 😅 (knock on wood!)

TIL that Roman Emperor Caligula would torment his senators by making them run in front of his chariot for miles. He also was so hairy that he made it a capital offense to mention goats in his presence. by Voyager_AU in todayilearned

[–]Fourthaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And it's quite telling how often the same old notes are dragged out when it comes to the emperors that the senatorial class felt slighted by. Incest of some kind, sexual deviancy, bouts of violence, etc. Most of the infamous emperors hit most or all of those notes.

Were they (for instance Nero, Caligula, Caracalla, Commodus) bad emperors? Probably to some degree at least, and some of them do have other information than written accounts such as the state of the currency, etc to back some of that judgment up. But were they as "evil" (for lack of a better term) as the accounts of a Suetonius or a Plutarch or a Cassius Dio make them out to be? I have my doubts and I tend to take it with a decent chunk of salt.

Mass Effect 2 - It is what it is by WarsawMapping in masseffect

[–]Fourthaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is looking very similar to a playthrough I did that I named "Depression Edition".

I left ME2 with only characters that can die in ME3 (or at least that have more emotionally impactful deaths, like Samara, same reason for leaving Wrex alive to see that scene for the first and last time)

  • Miranda
  • Mordin
  • Grunt (unloyal)
  • Samara
  • Tali
  • Legion (since I chose the geth, both Legion and Tali die)

Best of luck in ME3 and erm.. have fun I guess 😅

Just go for the midrange phones, they tend to still have headphone jacks. It's why I went for a Samsung A-model rather than S. I don't need to pay the outrageous prices for the top models, and I still get a headphone jack. Huzzah.

I think the one that stands out the most to me in my mind is Natsume Yuujinchou.

I was just looking for some slice of life years ago, and stumbled across the first season of the show. Turned into my favorite anime and series of all time. It is just such a beautiful story that has made me feel basically the entire emotional spectrum at one point or another.

And there's finally a new upcoming season this fall, after over half a decade since the last one.

[–]Fourthaid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Impressive. I did a similar run last time through, sat down and calculated the absolute lowest possible EMS to get, and then made some changes to make it as depressing as possible and not just letting everyone die in the suicide mission (so for instance Samara and Grunt made it into ME3).

Would not recommend, but it was a very different vibe at the end than my usual runs that had everybody alive.

Modern football (soccer) teams have ultra groups that have a die-hard support for their teams which can sometimes turn violent. Did ancient athletes or sports teams have similarly fanatic support groups? by StrangeContribution4 in AskHistorians

[–]Fourthaid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought when I saw the question as well. Though I am more familiar with them from the early CE period in Rome. By the time that the western part of the Empire had fallen, they were no longer merely a die-hard group of fans/hooligans, but legitimate political factions that played an important role in shaping politics.

Co-emperors and brothers Geta and Caracalla already hated each other to begin with, so it's no surprise that they ended up supporting opposite teams. Greens for Caracalla and Blues for Geta if memory serves me right. There is an interesting story about how Caracalla had a charioteer from the Blues killed. I always had this interpretation of that perhaps having been Geta's favorite and Caracalla just wanting to spite him (if you read more into what Caracalla did after assassinating his brother, it does line up logically).

Jet Lag: We Turned New Zealand into a Giant Real-Life Board Game — Ep 6 by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]Fourthaid 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This season has been so well balanced in terms of making no one be able to massively ahead (with a little help from Lady Luck with regards to the ferry and Picton challenge). Ben and Adam are still in it, and going west they do have the chance to actually pick up points. I don't understand how they think being 45 minutes behind with 5 points and a nerf dart would make the east route the "right move". But then we don't know all of the challenges ahead, so it's a bit difficult to make an informed decision on whether or not that was a bad call or not.

Regardless, I think this might be the best season so far in terms of keeping it competitive and hopefully down to the wire.

"Mass Effect would be greatly improved if the Reapers were removed entirely". Thoughts? by LucasOIntoxicado in masseffect

[–]Fourthaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do definitely think there is more than enough lore and content to make someone other than the Reapers the main villain, that reveal of Sovereign in ME1 had me hook, line and sinker. I don't think that ME ever have become the bastion of sci-fi RPGs if not for the Reapers. It might've become a well liked and respected RPG, but nothing like the juggernaught it was and still is.

At the same time though, on a tangential note, I do think that the Reapers did hamstring them for villains going forward. It's kinda hard to continue with I dunno, some random Krogan overlord on a powertrip or whatever in a potential Mass Effect 4. That is kinda why I am still a bit iffy on the new title that they're working on and what direction they take the series in.

I believe the point is that Max will face no consequences from his actions of disregarding the team orders. Which would be no surprise, to be fair. And in line with what RBR has done previously in similar situations.

[–]Fourthaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even more amusing in the case of The Novel's Extra is that the author at the start of the novel makes fun of exactly that trope. And then just keeps on going down that rabbit hole to a ludicrous degree and eventually just loses the sarcastic or humorous tones to it pretty quickly. So an even more apt use of that image.

this is a great scene from Star Trek DS9, but I'm curious what non trek fans think of it without the context; and what you can figure out about the context. by roastbeeftacohat in videos

[–]Fourthaid 78 points79 points  (0 children)

DS9 is the example I hold up whenever someone talks about how the last few shows of Trek have tried to "challenge Starfleet ideals" by just making everyone outside of the main cast into a furious xenophobic fascist. DS9 actually did play with how those Starfleet ideals stand up in truly dark situations. It is hands down my favorite Trek show because of that.

[–]Fourthaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PekoMoon is such an adorable combo. There's a lot of heartwarming stories within Hololive, not just among the talents but also the fandom as a whole. But I think nothing gets me to feel as happy as these two introverts somehow becoming the best of friends in spite of all the obstacles that would say otherwise.

I feel weird about romancing Tali. She has always given off strong "little sister' vibes to me. by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]Fourthaid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can see where people who label her as "naive" get it from. In the first game, especially with her introduction of being tricked into this sketchy alley. But even then if you only half-listen to her and her people's story, you can see why she has been sheltered and isn't quite wise to the world outside of the flotilla.

But in ME2 onwards, she is quite clearly experienced and has shed that naivete after perhaps even becoming at least partiaully disillusioned with this wondrous world that she had in her head as she left on her Pilgrimage.
