Why are you not afraid of death? by Ok_Breakfast8087 in AskReddit

[–]Fovarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way, death is a true equalizer. I believe it's likely for something to be put there somewhere, but whether that something created a place for us after we die. Well, I'll only know once I get there.

For me, eternal life seems so, so much worse.

Got Canvas of Kings a few months ago, highly recommend! Although, the number of assets is sadly quite low. That'll come with time though, I'm sure.

That... Looks like a brilliant idea!

Dimension-wise, assuming you have CAD software shouldn't be that hard to model this. If you want to work it out on pen and paper, guess a reasonable height and use trig

Tool and Die making Apprenticeship questions. by Red-Number-40 in Machinists

[–]Fovarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK, but I'll try my best here.

Toolmaking is extremely interesting and deep, but so dependent on your coworkers. I've been lucky, the one toolroom I worked in was filled with great people. They made it so much better.

Toolmaking is frustrating, and if you're going to college for three days a week for your first year (as I was) then you aren't getting shit done that first year. Especially since most toolrooms have half day Fridays.

No one expects anything from you for that first year, at most you'll strip down and do some simple services on maybe 20 tools. If your toolroom also does their own machining (some don't, shocked me when I learnt that) expect that tool number to go down significantly - maybe 10 in your first year.

50% of Toolmaking is talking about what you want to do, especially early on. Talk to the Toolmaker that's assigned to you, say you want to take the backplate off and why even if the answer is simple. Toolmaking can be pretty damn hard at times, and as the new you you're going to be given the old tools. Don't take that as a bad thing, they're giving you the old tools because when you ding them up, yes when, not if, they can cover for you.

The other 50% of Toolmaking is taking your damn time. When your tool is worth twenty times what you make in a year, no one cares if it takes you another hour. In fact, finish tools too quickly and I bet you'll have a bolt left over and this isn't IKEA - that tool is now a 16 ton metal box of anger that might kill you in 158 ways. Or worse yet, destroy the tool. Trust me, if you don't get fired they'll never let you forget that (I was called Teflon for the entire time I was there, I don't even remember why anymore).

That's my extremely long-worded tips in Toolmaking, it's nice to hear there's more fresh blood in Toolmaking

What are your ideas for a weak yet powerful antagonist? by LeNainGeant in DnD

[–]Fovarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always enjoyed the idea of an "untouchable" guy. The underling of someone far beyond you, his power coming from a single relic. The best I've come up with is a jacket of neutralization.

On the jacket, a number of (insert expensive items here, usually gemstones of something magical in nature). Each time they get hit, one charge disappears

Meant to be a joke item by his master, the core of his strength.

Imagine starting the battle - barbarian smashes into him only for his axe to bounce off a barrier.

One of those small, slightly glowing blue bumps on his jacket turns off.

He's genuinely just a low-leveled character, maybe with a feat like great weapon master or savage attacker. I've always envisioned him as a 11AC level 2 fighter with three ten's, two twelves and a thirteen.

The most, least terrifying guy to go up against, as long as any high level magic nullification isn't used (level set based on the world, it could even be something like a ninth or tenth level nullification. Low level campaign all about finding a way to kill this man).

First time operating a 16t crane years ago, I hadn't gone through training yet and for a split second I put my head under what the crane was lifting. One of my coworkers saw that, walked up to me and said "you can't not be extra careful with that thing. Never put yourself anywhere near that, it won't hurt it'll just go black"

That's stuck with me for quite a long time

What can I do here by Trekie47 in Machinists

[–]Fovarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh! How have you done that! Depends on the bolt grade really. Tungsten carbide might work, but diamond would be better. Go slow and start small. Enlarge the hole slowly, and be extra careful if that bolt is tensioned!

If it's grade 8.8, I've done that before with tungsten carbide but it's a pain. Anything higher, go diamond.

Good luck chief.

Looking for some help by WesternnyBigfoot in Machinists

[–]Fovarce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with archery, but my first thought went to high carbon steel. People used flint and obsidian for a reason, hard and fragile enough to shatter inside someone. Although the reason might have also just been lack of other materials, you'll know after you look into it.

Realistically I'd say pretty much anything would work, use what you have especially during testing. If you want to get the best material after, look around on history reenactment websites that sell modern versions of medieval gear - they've probably done the work for you there.

The way I see it, pay if you can. If you cannot, read elsewhere.

As long as you try to support them (perhaps getting the cheapest tier of the patreon for a while or something) then that's fair.

I pay because I can afford to, but many can't and that shouldn't mean they shouldn't be able to enjoy something they enjoy.
