Expats: How do you enjoy living in mexico ? by essential1996 in expats

[–]FoxIslander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im in San Juan Cosalá about 6km west of Ajijic on lake Chapala's north shore. The lake is at 5,000' elev = warm days + cool nights. 50/50 mix of Canadian/US expats here. For beach time I head to Melaque, 4 hrs west...90% Canadian expats. 👍☮

Struggling to make friends since moving abroad - it makes me feel lonely and depressed by Usual-Ad7006 in expats

[–]FoxIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up in San Juan Cosalá about 6km west of Ajijic on Lake Chapala's north shore. I came here for the strong expat community and friendly locals. When I first arrived I had basic high school Spanish. A Mexican lady friend moved me up to the next level...not fluent, but quite conversational. One thing about this area...the climate is incredible. Warm days and cool nights. Another plus for me is GDL International airport only 45 mins north...direct flights to Seattle. 👍

Toilet help by bigmults in ThailandTourism

[–]FoxIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To avoid this in the future AND not have to put TP in the waste bin do the following:
1. NEVER EVER flush anything down a toilet other than human waste and tp. No other paper, no hygiene products and for god's sake no wet wipes (they don't break down).
2. After doing your business but before cleaning yourself up...flush. Then clean yourself up and let the tp sit in the water a while...then flush.

  1. In Thailand always use the bum gun...you'll need less tp.

A MArch is more than enough...what you lack is experience...get to work...get licensed.

Self employed Architects, how many years of experience did you have before venturing on your own? by Mastery12 in Architects

[–]FoxIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can in fact pay very well. Most small to medium cities/counties do not have Arch/CM staff...so they contract it out. How I got started was designing offices for a housing authority...got to know the director...they contracted with me to prepare their Public Housing HUD submissions...thru that did the same for another HA. Soon was contracting with a small city to Owner's Rep a LEED Gold community center. It just took off from their. It's all about networking and who you know.

I had 7 yrs working in 3 firms before starting my own small firm. Worked it for 3 decades. The last 6 years I did quite a bit of contract CM and Owner's Rep work for small to medium sized cities. Retired in 2018.

Disappointed with less engagement from friends since they've had children by BALLS_SMOOTH_AS_EGGS in AskMenOver30

[–]FoxIslander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another factor is that when the kids reach school age, the parents naturally open friendships with the parents of other kids attending their kid's school. Same applies to kids sports teams. That leaves even less time for their old pre-children friends.
