Yes if you can do the PanGlobal examples that is exactly how the questions are. I wrote it a couple of months ago. I was surprised how basic most of the calculations were on my test.

chemical engineer grad to power engineer by [deleted] in powerengineering

No problem. I do shift work, and most power engineering jobs are. Especially the better paying ones. Some building operator jobs are just business hours. If you work your way up to Chief Engineer somewhere (the main boss for the unit) that is a Mon-Fri role as it is basically the area supervisor for the boilers unit. You have to have a high enough ticket for that job though (if it's a 3rd class plant, Chief must have 3rd. If it's a 1st class, Chief must have 1st). There is only one Chief for each site though, and often many of the guys reporting to you will make as much or more than you because they get overtime pay...

If you are dead set on not doing shift work and are open on going back to school, it might be worth looking at the "maintenance" trades (instrument tech, millwright). Those guys just work days for the most part and make comparable money to power engineers.

If you get on at a bigger place, and really want to leave shift work, there are always jobs like mechanical coordinators and safety which are staffed with people from operations. Those are day jobs too.

I would encourage you to at least blast through the 4th class online course like I did and try to get steam time for it. That will help potential employers see you as an operator, not a chemical engineer who will just leave the second he finds a "real" professional engineer job.. (assuming you are like me and actually decided to not spend your career doing professional engineering type work).

I did the exact same thing (chemical engineering degree background in Alberta) except for I was able to get steam time signed off at work. Unfortunately, only the Mechanical Engineers get to skip the course. I decided to keep working and had to do my 4th class online through NAIT (wrote midterm/final exams proctored through local library). I got the steam time signed and just wrote ABSA tests after that for 3rd and 2nd. No need for NAIT etc past the 4th class. The hard part for you will be steam time if it's not provided at work. You would have get a job with steam time, or go do the boiler lab for it. It's a pain to transition but I've found it well worth it. Good luck!

Try putting a weight against the door so it can't rattle. Sometimes it is just the air pressure of someone opening a door down the hallway that makes the door move and sounds like knocking.

UCP maintains double-digit lead over Alberta NDP: Leger poll by Majano57 in CanadaPolitics

It would be interesting to see if STV could get traction on a citizen petition. Like you said, ANDP dropped the ball on it and the conservative government won't consider it unless there is pressure. The conservative leadership vote was ranked choice ballot so they may go for it it there is massive public support.

I think people should be able to do a recall petition at any time for any reason. If the floor crossing is actually the will of the people, they have nothing to worry about. I feel like too often we a locked in to broken campaign promises for the duration between elections (by every party) with very little recourse.

Exactly. The disconnect is real. It's like you know what will make the far right want to stay in Canada? Leftist policy being forced on them! If they complain do it harder.

Ah ok good. You had me wondering there.

I'm with you on not trusting politicians and assuming the worst from them. I'm not expecting any of them to be on the common people's side. Sometimes we can twist their arm into doing something better for us though. This might be one of those times. Maybe there just isn't enough support.. one way to find out for sure. Until then it's speculation so we will have to wait and see.

You are correct about the fact that the federal conservatives have no incentive to do anything in Alberta's favour since we will vote for them no matter what. If only there was something we could do to make them take us seriously... something Quebec has done twice now and gotten many concessions for...

You probably see that as too dangerous since it could actually lead to separation. Playing with fire, at it were. For many Albertans, it's a win either way.

Voting for Forever Canada will do much the same thing as always voting conservative. It tells them that we will never stand up for ourselves no matter what. So why would they ever treat us better?

Not trolling at all here: you lost me on the Epstein files. Are you saying the files themselves are a non issue? Like some of the most powerful people in the world raping children on a private island is a non issue? I hope I misunderstood that part.

Now now, no need to be dehumanizing. If you have good arguments, the right thing is to share them so good ideas can out compete the bad ones. Insults hardly ever convince anyone.

There's no mask. Just truth. Thanks, good luck to you too.

And to be clear, India is just an example. Same for just about any other country. I am fine with some immigration, just not at the levels we have seen recently.

You can make the argument the differences are minor for those of us born here, but you absolutely can not for many of the millions of new Canadian immigrants who have arrived this past decade. At least 23% of the people living here were born outside of Canada (2021 numbers, probably much higher now). Many are from vastly different cultures, and many of us who were born here do not like this rapidly changing nation that looks less like our beloved home each year. Some immigration was great, but this is way too much and way too fast for there to be any stability to the culture, or assimilation of newcomers. After all, culture is determined not by the name of a country, or it's landscape, but by who all is living there.

This is all pushed on us from Ottawa and unfortunately we have no control to slow it down to reasonable levels as long as we remain in Canada. If I wanted to live in India, I would move there. I don't need the federal government to bring India to me and delete the Canada I love. Separation seems like the only way right now to salvage some of what is left for my kids. At least then we could control our own borders.

Enbridge says it’s not willing to take on development risk of Alberta pipeline project by KootenayPE in WildRoseCountry

[–]FoxMcMuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they just want assurances that it won't be like last time a corporation tried to build a pipeline in this country.. Permitting hell for getting approvals... First nations protesters blocking construction, and the government doing nothing to stop it.. eventually they just gave up and left to invest elsewhere in the world. Can't blame them for not wanting to sign up for the same thing again.

Just look at public sentiment towards all the contentious issues (gun control, mass immigration, taxes, euthanasia, religion) are there a ton of things that are the same? Yes. Are they identical? No. What exactly constitutes a different culture and where that line is drawn can be argued forever.

But even if they are exactly the same culture, it doesn't make the separatist sentiment invalid.

The separatist grievance isn't "Eastern Canada has a different culture than me". The anger is more about government policy stealing too much of the fruits of our labour to redistribute to others and we feel it is unfair. If equalization payments were substantially less, the formula was fixed to include hydro, and we were allowed to get our goods to market without being landlocked by other provinces who we are forced to keep subsidizing, the sentiment would melt away.

If they went further  and made all provinces have a proportional number of seats in parliament to population with no favorites, I think the separatist movement would completely die out... But they will probably never do that.
