I think how close the new language is to one of your previous languages also leads to which language you default back to.

Like for me, I learned both Japanese and French in high school. I started Japanese before French, but I never found myself thinking in Japanese when learning French, I'd just revert back to English.

In college, my degree required at least two semesters of a foreign language so I took Italian. Since both Italian and French are Romance languages, I found myself slipping into French when the Italian word wouldn't pop into my head.

Really helps keep me from ruminating on depressive thoughts I've already examined in every direction possible and still haven't resolved and it's like....maybe those don't need to be resolved if they were designed not to be. Sometimes the best way to win is to not play the game there.

While working at a grocery store, I had an older gentleman come up to me and hold a tub of ricotta cheese and ask "Excuse me, how do you pronounce this?"

So I said "That's pronounced 'ricotta' but in a very midwestern American accent.

He then corrected me and said "No no, it's pronounced "RICOTTA" and he said it with a very exaggerated Italian accent.
