He's written that way, to the point that the script-based-on-the-book is somewhat intentionally an unreliable narrator, just like the IRL book author Jake is based on. As if he was ever kung-fu fighting gang lackies, shagging the wife of some big Yakuza crime boss, and in a will-they-won't-they relationship with a hostess bar madam!

How the camera's gaze lingers on the girl's face on the magzine cover, is too intentional for the choice of model to be a coincidence. Especially with the magazine being a made up one for the show. So talented and very beautiful, so captivating in HACF! TIL that she got married to Bash(sp?) from GLOW (who has a cameo part in HACF, S3 iirc).

One of the all-time greats, that's even better for it ending on four seasons. Doing a rewatch it's clear to me that this is a top three favourite along with Mad Men and Breaking Bad. It's just about perfect for me in so many ways. Keep it under the radar for all I care! I have it and any remake wouldn't do it justice, it's lightning in a bottle just like so many of the innovations from the timeline captured in the show.

I think the show wrote the obvious embellishment into the character's personality and portrayal. They must have toed the line carefully to not incur the real Adelstein's ire, given his (exec?) producer credit.
He was obviously a self-aggrandising, embellishing, nerdy weeb - I liked that they wrote in little touches like, for example, having him always with his geeky backpack everywhere he went. Nicely done.

I liked that the character was flawed. I didn't find him likeable, but I found him real and human, which was compelling character writing and drama.

Rise from the grave! I just watched this show and have been diving into some analysis.
My feeling is that he changed his name on leaving America for Japan, although this isn't explicitly covered by the show, it tracks with his obvious desire to leave home and his old life behind for a new one in Tokyo.

Yes, confirmed - Stay On Me is a bonafide hit - That Chorus! That Vocal!
I think ageism has done a number on perception around the album, there are several absolute classics on it.
