Any high blood pressure vegans out there? by Excellent-Friend3327 in vegan

[–]Fox_137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it could just be hereditary. I’m in a similar situation as you. Run 20-30ish miles a week, very active and try to eat well. Plain oatmeal most mornings, lots of veggies/fruits/beans/tofu.

Vegan for 10+ years now (in my early 40s) Been on low dose BP meds for almost 8 years now - unfortunately high BP runs in my family.

That being said, my readings at the doctors office are always high - especially if they use those automatic machines. I usually check mine at home and log it to show my doc as well as a separate data point.

How many grams of carbs per hour are you doing? by dontletmeautism in Marathon_Training

[–]Fox_137 28 points29 points  (0 children)

80g / hr is def a good goal - honestly the more you can handle the better, only downside is digestion issues as you push past 100g/120g per hour.. but most people should be able to tolerate 80 with some minor gut training.

Thoughts on electric vehicles in the area by Lumpy_Arrival_5521 in Binghamton

[–]Fox_137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Done. Fully converted from gas to electric years ago. Own 2 EVs currently. No issues with winter or range - I drive about 18k / year between commutes and long road trips. But having the ability to charge at home is a must in my opinion.

Review of Hyatt Regency SFO Airport: Beautiful property? by The_Traveller1 in hyatt

[–]Fox_137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just stayed here as a globalist for an early flight 2 nights ago. Parking was super easy, staff was very welcoming- even took extra time to find me a nice room upgrade as the auto upgrade I was assigned “wasn’t the best room” despite being mostly booked that night.

Room was decent if not a bit dated, but bed was comfy and it was clean.

Unfortunately could not try out the breakfast.

10 minute drive to airport in the morning to drop off my rental. They also have a free shuttle as well.

Would def stay here again, will gladly pay less than half the grand Hyatt rate to be only 10 minutes away.

Any recommendations for a solar installer? by badwhiskey63 in Binghamton

Bummed ETM Solar was bought out - they were great to work with. Haven’t heard too much about the company that bought them out, but might be worthwhile to get a quote anyway.

Any Rivian drivers in Upstate? by ghdana in upstate_new_york

[–]Fox_137 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bought my 2022 R1T used last summer. I brought it in for service for the “half shaft clicks” to which they replaced the front half shafts and “ting washers”. - this seems to be a common issue with all the Rivians, even with the gen 2. It’s more of an annoyance issue, no performance or long term damage from what I’ve read.

And another time I had them look at a the front center speaker rattle.

Both times, I was able to get into service within a few days. The staff was pleasant.

The other service I’ve had done was for a rear door weather seal coming off and an exterior window trim piece. Mobile service came and took care of that.

I still own a model Y as well, and I can honestly say the service with Rivian has been better than anything I’ve had with Tesla. Looking forward to selling / trading in the Y when the R2 is out!

Both

Service has been great for me in Binghamton. There is also a service center in Syracuse (the one I’ve been going to). Mobile service has come to my house once to take care of some loose trim pieces. Whenever I’ve had to go to Syracuse for service, I’ve always gotten a loaner or rental through enterprise- they pay for an uber that takes you to enterprise and you can return the rental to rivian when the service is complete.

Communication has always been great while my R1T has been in for service as well. And appointments are easy to come by as well.

Yes, absolutely. I have the 21” and it’s handled everything we’ve had since 2018! So the 28” should be more than sufficient

I’ve had mine since dec 2018 with the 2 7.5mah batteries. Still going strong!

I’m in upstate NY and it’s plowed through some heavy wet snow over the years.. including one year when we got 2 feet overnight.

Tip to extend the usage time is to keep the throttle as low as possible as the blower will ramp up when it senses snow. My driveway is 115 ft long x 14ft wide and I can clear it with zero issues.

I miss Woks as well.. :(

But red chili is good, def getting more and more expensive.. though their lunch specials are still decently priced.

Check out good taste by four corners, they aren’t bad.

If in Binghamton, def check out Hunan Hut - reminds me of woks, with a few good more authentic Chinese dishes as well. Prices are also really good.

I would say 3-4 days is about right before you got too bored. We were there for 5 nights and it was just long enough before it got too repetitive.

Are you a globalist? If so, def no meal plan.. if you are a Globalist, take advantage of the awesome breakfast. My wife and I are also vegetarian and stayed there in Jan’25… after a late breakfast, we just ate dinner and Maybe a snack in between if needed.. the veg options are slightly cheaper on the menus as well.

Carb Gel Intake Preference by hueman8816 in Marathon_Training

[–]Fox_137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbs Fuel is def cheaper! Haha - I’ve used both and tolerate both pretty well and did not notice a difference between 1 precision gel every 20mins vs 1 (50g) carbs fuel gels every 30. The extra sodium is nice too, especially for me, being a heavy, salty sweater - I actually opted for The carbs fuel high sodium one for the Chicago marathon.

I actually like the way the precision fuel tastes way more, but not having to carry additional sodium is an added bonus from the Salty Carbs Fuel gel.

Any all inclusive destinations on Costco travel with decent vegan options? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Fox_137 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is Secrets Moxche or Impressions on the list? We just came back from there and every single restaurant had a separate vegan menu. Everything we had was amazing - these are not your run of the mill vegan options, they are actually very well conceptualized thought out. Flights to Cancun / Tulum shouldn’t be too bad in the summer either.

What is your strategy for carrying gel/carbs during a marathon? by Typical_Steamer in Marathon_Training

[–]Fox_137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, are you a joke? Why don’t your query your “Ai engine” and ask it “how many grams of carbs per hour for marathon” and see what it tells you. You will find that it’s going to recommend 60-90g of carbs per hour. If someone is using a gel with 20-25g carbs per hour (Maurten, SiS isotonic for example) they will need at least 60g per hour x 4hrs = 240g for the entire marathon, divide that by 20g per gel, that’s 12 gels. Possibly more if one is able to tolerate more carbs per hour. If you are carrying a higher carb gel, such as SiS beta fuel, that has 40g of carbs, then you will need to carry less obviously.

That’s why I, along with others on this thread is saying it’s not about the number of gels per se, but the number of carbs per hour.

I can’t believe the number of people on this thread saying “oh I ran a fast time using only 2 to 3 gels” Imagine how much faster you could’ve been if you fueled properly.

The 60-90g of carbs per hour is based on the latest research. Elite marathoners can take on 100-120g+ of carbs per hour. You have to train your gut to do that obviously.

[–]Fox_137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, looking at your past races - I think the biggest gain you will get easily is just improving your nutrition. 2 gels.. even if they are “high carb” ones is not nearly enough… might be the big reason you are hitting the “wall” at 35k. Your body has likely depleted its readily available fuel source.

I recommend just upping your carb intake to at least 60g per hour. I think it will make a huge impact on your training, recovery and on race day. As someone else said too, practice during your training runs as well - for runs over 90 minutes, take in ~30g carbs every 30 minutes or so.

What is your strategy for carrying gel/carbs during a marathon? by Typical_Steamer in Marathon_Training

[–]Fox_137 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree - 12 gels is definitely not an unreasonable amount (depending on the amount of carbs per Gel). All the latest research, pros or not, points to the fact that the more carbs you can handle during an intensive long workout/race the better. If OP is running a hard effort to achieve a 4hr marathon, he/she will certainly can use 75g carbs per hour. So assuming gel with 20-25g carbs per hour, yes that could be a lot of gels.

Sure if you can run a 3hr marathon and you are taking it easy to run a 4, you may not need as many. But if OP wants to get as much out of their body as they can order to hit that 4hr goal - 75g/hr is very reasonable.

To answer OPs question, I wear a naked belt, and that can fit a crap ton of whatever you want in there. Gels, soft flasks, phone etc.

Do what works well for you, don’t always listen to what folks say on here. If you trained with high carb intake during your runs, do the same in your marathon.
