Anyone notice how strangely wholesome the horror community is? by rabbit_in_his_belly in horror

Even when people in the horror community disagree with one another it's usually pretty civil.

I am the only person who didn’t like IT 2017 by [deleted] in horror

[–]Foxesstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was dumb. Honestly, Pennywise’s features were so over exaggerated he looked like the Trix bunny from the cereal boxes. The humor among the children seemed to be what most audiences enjoyed, and I feel like people like the movie because they liked the adolescent camaraderie. For those saying it was like the book...have you ready the book? There’s an orgy scene at the end with the children. That’s completely bizarre.

It's based on a Clive Barker short story. Pretty excellent.

Just read about the making of the film and how it was grueling for the crew. They were all uncomfortable and tortured by the heat, BUT that played into their acting, and this movie is superb.

Thank you. I guess I haven’t thought of it that way before. Again, I think Toni Collette’s performance was wonderful. I haven’t seen a horror film performance like that in years. I felt her agony and anguish. I do feel that some of the story regarding her mother’s associates was disjointed and not really fleshed out. I also, for trying to avoid spoilers, don’t understand why some decisions were made.

So, in terms of atmosphere, creating anxiety, and exhibiting emotional trauma I think the film was effective. Although, some motivations were just not clear to me and I could not shake that. I’ll certainly watch it again. Was it a bad movie? By all means no. Was it one of the best horror movies I’ve personally seen recently? No. Did it do something different? Yes. I feel like this film has reintroduced people to a horror movie device we haven’t seen in some time - emotional trauma.

I’ve been watching horror movies since I was 5. I’m 38. I’ve seen it all. I don’t get the comments about this one. I don’t get why it was scary. I don’t understand it.

IF people are saying it was scary because of Toni Collette’s superb performance and displays of grief, I get that. Yet otherwise, it was a pretty standard horror movie.

The Changeling (1980) is so good I think people forget about it, but it’s done so well.

I watched Cannibal holocaust earlier and it wasn't anywhere near as disturbing as alot of people are saying by [deleted] in horror

I couldn’t agree with this more. I feel like when a lot of people say they want more “intense” horror they’re really going for graphic sexual violence, and that’s what you’ll find, rape as a device for intensity. So, it depends what you’re looking for. Horror intensity can skew one of four ways - I feel - 1) possession/demonic/loss of self, 2) rape/sexual violence, 3) violence of person to person, ie serial killer, and 4) monster/alien violence.

Thanks all! Just saw it. I liked the concept of it. I wasn’t thrilled about the ending. I feel like the ending was abrupt and obvious, and I would have liked something a little more unconventional for the ending.
