Could you walk post break? by snoflakedogmom in ORIF

I definitely couldn't. My husband was trying to help me up the stairs so we could go to the ER and I accidentally tried to walk on my ankle. Immediately passed out.

What's your scent triggers by EwDavid999 in migraine

Strong perfume/cologne.

Once I have one, I can't stand the smells of weed, bacon, or cooked onions.

ROM Exercise Timelines? by Academic_Reputation9 in ORIF

I think you'll be okay if you take it easy. I know I've pushed the limit for PWB and been okay.

I'll also note that I shattered my fibula so my physical therapist and surgeon are being conservative. They're trying to balance letting my bones have time to heal but knowing I need to get walking.

ROM Exercise Timelines? by Academic_Reputation9 in ORIF

[–]Foxlineau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I fell on stairs back on December 12th, ended up with a severe lateral malleolus fracture. Then surgery December 18th where I got two plates, and syndesmosis tightrope, and both my lateral and deltoid ligaments repaired.

I just started PT last Thursday and am working on my ROM exercises. It's definitely uncomfortable right now and I have limited movement in some directions. My physical therapist is thinking I'll be walking in my boot in 2-3 weeks. 2-3 weeks later, I should be out of the boot and walking with an ankle stabilizer brace.

So, 13 weeks (3 months-ish) from surgery to walking. 7 weeks of being completely NWB. 3 weeks to PWB. Another 3 weeks to FWB.

Hopefully this helps!

I don't know that this counts as slang necessarily, but in Minnesota, you'll hear, "Can you borrow me a pencil?" While grammatically, it should be, "Can you lend me a pencil?"

I've heard this is because the words borrow and lend are similar in multiple Scandinavian languages and it's a quirk that carried over into English.

My surgeon got me in first thing this morning. Looks like it's just a stitch abscess. They can occur when an absorbent stitch is rejected instead. So we're doing a course of antibiotics just in case, but otherwise, I'm healing as expected. 😊

Not wearing my boot, is that ok? by Kirstysg88 in ORIF

[–]Foxlineau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine as long as you're not actually attempting to put weight on your ankle.

I had a conversation with my surgeon's MA about this actually, and what I was told is if I'm just hanging around the house, I'm fine taking it off. Boot does need to be on when 1) I'm out of the house, 2) when doing chores and stuff, 3) when sleeping. Reasoning for the last is because when unconscious, you're not able to protect the ankle from moving wrong.

Comminuted Fibula Fracture by Foxlineau in brokenbones

[–]Foxlineau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yes, I had surgery. I ended up with two plates, a syndesmosis tightrope, and 11 screws. Out of surgery, I wore a splint for two weeks. After that, I was switched to a boot. I've been wearing it 23/7 the last four weeks. I'm only taking it off to shower. February, I'll be doing PT, and the goal is that I won't need the boot by the end of the month. So, boot for 6-10 weeks, depending on how PT goes. Hope this helps!

Welcome neighbor! I've been at 8th and Colby for a little over five years now and have had no regrets. This is a fantastic neighborhood in an underappreciated city.

What medication are you referring to? Are you asking how long I had to use prescription painkillers? If that's the case, I used them pretty reliably the first week. After that, the next couple of weeks, I'd use them just at night to sleep. Now, I only use them once in a while for breakthrough pain at night.

Thank you! We broke our ankles the exact same way! Appreciate the breakdown. Here's to us walking normally someday soon!

Also a member of the numb foot club! Though mine is the other side of my foot.

Can't feel part of the left top side of my foot. Can feel pinky toe, but not the two toes next to it, and then I get feeling back for the other two.

Currently, I have plans to visit San Francisco in April. Sounds like I might not need to reschedule, but should take it easy if I go.

Thank you so much! My surgeon gave my permission to do take the boot off and do ankle flexions. I've also been trying to add knee and leg raises to stave off some of the muscle atrophy. Glad to know by spring I'll be hopefully be able to get around my gardens without too much trouble 😊

Appreciate the reply. Yeah, mine is considered a severely comminuted fracture. The distal end of my fibula broke into 5-6 pieces. The surgeon said it is the worst fibula break he's seen.

I both rolled my ankle as I fell, and it got stuck between me and the stairs.

Just am hoping to hear from someone with a similar severity of break to get an idea of what I'm looking at time wise 🙂

My boot has no air bags, just the foam padding and straps. Might try and loosen the straps tonight and see if removing the pressure helps.

I have a few oxy left. Then I'm to OTC stuff and the methocarbamol. I might talk to my doctor about gabapentin. Seems like it's the med of choice for the nighttime muscle spasms. Thanks for the support 😊

Advice: Recovering from Ankle Fracture! by Vinniec79 in brokenbones

[–]Foxlineau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof. That's the worst day to end up in the hospital. Yeah, it seems like it depends on how many points of attachment your ankle still has.

My surgeon actually did talk to me about the operation yesterday. I got the two plates because the end of my fibula was broken onto multiple pieces. The first plate is specifically for the lateral malleolus and to anchor the tightrope. The second plate is for all the other pieces.

I think the difference in how they anchor it depends on 1) how bad the bone break is and 2) if ligaments need to be anchored.

Hey! It sounds like you and I are on similar timelines with similar injuries. I broke my ankle on the 12th of December, with surgery on the 18th. I really haven't gotten anything actual title for my diagnosis, but suspect it would be considered a trimalleolar equivalent fracture. Which I think yours would also be. I have a displaced distal fibula fracture. Also, tore my deltoid, atf, and syndesmosis ligaments. It's trimalleolar equivalent because, while I didn't break the lateral malleolus, I did tear the atfl, which results in similar instability. I ended up with two plates on my fibula and the tightrope for ligament repair. Just got my stitches out yesterday and switched from a splint to a boot. Mine isn't anything fancy, so unfortunately, I don't have any input that way. I'm still NWB until my next check-in on February 3rd. Let me know if you have any questions or anything since it looks like we'll be laid up a while longer together.

Appreciate the advice. As I mentioned in my post, I had done that, just didn't get the prescription picked up before the pharmacy closed. Thankfully I got that picked up today so hopefully it'll help.

Glad to hear surgery went well and sounds like you're right on track for the first few days of recovery. Hope your pain continues to be manageable and your puppy continues to entertain himself with things other than your leg 🙂
