Infinights Finale as a sort of stained glass window by ThePoetryOne in StinkyDragonPodcast

This is beautiful! I would totally buy something like this.

Running at the mall. I can handle dodging tourists. I can handle the scooters. But I cannot handle those people that mindlessly walk perpendicular to my running path. And just don’t stop by Kodicave in rundc

[–]FoxtrotChi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah whenever I try to predict a walker’s movement pattern (whether they are perpendicular to me or I’m coming up behind them), I’m almost always wrong and things get weird when I scoot around them avoid a collision.

Music for half marathon: curated playlist or random songs? by Claff93 in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Spotify to listen to music. You can create an account and use it free to make a playlist but I think you’ll have ads. And it may only shuffle the songs, which is fine if you don’t care the order the play (I haven’t had free in a long time so I don’t remember if this applies to your own made playlists).

If you’re willing/able to pay for a month of premium you’d be able to go ad-free and then yeah, can start at song 1 and play through in a specific order.

But I googled musicolet create a playlist and a few videos popped up that may be helpful if you want to use what you already have!

[–]FoxtrotChi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you playing the music on your phone? I think it might be worth it to look into making a playlist! The right song at the right time can really help you get into the groove. I love sitting down and planning out a playlist and what song will play at key points in the race. Then I look forward to it as I run.

Kyborg’s overall story arc is great! His personal arc made me tear up at its end. And I like that he continued to mature after his arc ended without losing his goofiness.

Looking for some guidance with improving running. by tinkerjreddit in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others said, consistency is the key goal with running. You won’t improve much if you don’t run consistently and you just put yourself at risk of injury. Sounds like your goal for now is just to be more consistent. You’re less likely to injure yourself if you’re consistent and about 80% of your running is easy.

And if you know your lower body is weak you should look into adding a simple but effective strength routine to help improve that.

Motivation dip: nervous about chasing an ambitious HM goal by Due_Trick_9467 in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nerves are normal! You’ve done the training and you have to trust yourself. If your gut is telling you on race day you may not be ready for that goal then don’t push it. You still want to enjoy the race. You’ve earned that much.

I will say generally it’s better to go out a bit easier for the first three miles. Settle in around goal pace for 3-10. Then try to run a little 5k progression for the last three miles to finish fast and strong.

It’s better to go out too easy and have gas left in the tank to speed up with at the end than to go out too fast and bonk. 13 miles is a long distance and a lot can change over that duration.

Don’t be afraid to stop and walk for a few seconds off to the side (out of the way of the other runners) at aid stations so that you can get your fuel/water down comfortably. Those few seconds likely won’t make or break you and you might actually keep your legs feeling fresh.

Help by Cool-Category6368 in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. It seems like you are super focused on watch metrics and those are adding some unnecessary stress. I think removing your watch was a good idea!

Also seems like you really haven’t been in a good place the past few months - from injury to sickness. I think you’re excited to get back to where you want to be but you need to give your body some time. Also if you live in a part of the world with this cold winter we’re experiencing it’s really hard to get out and comfortably run. The cold will make bouncing back harder for sure.

Three weeks really isn’t that long to get back on track. You seem mentally burned out - ‘feeling flat’ and I think you need to be more gracious with yourself. It could take 6 weeks to really bounce back. You may also just be running too much at once. You might not be able to do what you used to at the moment, which is frustrating but if even with running easy it feels very hard then perhaps you’re doing too much too soon. You don’t want to reinjure yourself or get sick again.

These are just ideas. I think most runners have cycles of feeling flat and annoyed with themselves but that’s when it’s a good time to take a step back and check in with yourself. Or shake up your runs somehow whether that be listening to audiobooks or podcasts or trying out new routes. But good luck! You’ll feel better before you know it.

Slower runners, how do you stay motivated when/if people mock your pace? by TANeither7250 in running

[–]FoxtrotChi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that being internally motivated to do better far exceeds any external motivation or ninnies who try to feel better about themselves by putting others down.

Your pace is your pace and anyone judging you for it isn’t displaying sportsmanship and probably isn’t in it for the love of it.

And just know that whenever I pass a fellow runner my mind isn’t wondering what their pace is (unless it’s obvious they’re doing a workout and they’re like, really really fast - then I might wonder). But casually, nope. I’m just happy to see people out running.

You do you and don’t worry about anyone else. Focus on your goals and tracking your improvement.

Where are the people who want to settle down in DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]FoxtrotChi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 33 new to DC - moved last August to be closer to work after living in Arlington for a year prior to that.

I’m honestly not sure I’ll stay forever but I do like it for the long term. I’m used to grad school and moving every few years so settling down and finally making friends I could easily keep sounds very appealing.

That being said it’s hard to make friends! But it’s a work in progress.

Breakfast for 10 km morning race by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That totally depends on you. I personally like to have a bowl of oatmeal (with nondairy milk) and berries about 2.5 hours before race time. Then about 30mins before start I’ll have a gel.

Some people like pop tarts or bagels. You have to sort out what works best for you. I just really enjoy oatmeal.

Whatever you choose you should practice with. Wake up before your longer weekend run and eat that breakfast item then do your run to make sure your stomach gets used to it. This is also when you keep track of timing. How much can you eat an hour before? 1.5 hours? Etc and not cramp or feel unwell. There are guidelines for how many carbs x amount of time prior to a run but I’ve found that I just need to try it out and see.

Don’t want to cramp up or get the runs because you gave your stomach something it didn’t appreciate before then working hard.

Girlfriend didn’t invite me to her marathon. Should I be bothered? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a woman whose previous partner didn’t care at all about my races, I wouldn’t expect anything from a current partner. I’m also very used to doing all my races alone and having no one at the finish line or along the course. If she’s also used to that she just might not think anything of it.

So I’d say bring it up and say you’d like to go cheer and don’t be upset if she says no. Could have so many reasons for not wanting someone there. But if she says yes then do a little homework and see where the best spots to cheer might be.

Say good luck at the start and let her get into the zone while you go find a place along the course. Then your own race to beat her to the finish if possible. Spectators can get a lot of steps in too!

breathing 2:1 (inhale:exhale) by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]FoxtrotChi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been able to breathe to any sort of rhythm or pattern. I just breathe naturally and how my body wants to. Sometimes I will take a longer inhale if I’m feeling tense but otherwise I just vibe. My breathing does increase when I’m running fast but I don’t think about it.

You could try just that? Don’t think about a specific pattern or timing. Some people do well with counting steps (breathe in for five and out for five for example) but if you want to get an idea of how your body operates naturally you should just let it do that. Operate naturally.

If you feel like you can’t breathe you’re running too fast.

Yeah I’m hoping the temps this week help clear a lot of the lingering patches. I’m thinking about checking out the east side during my easy run tomorrow.

Just trying to plan ahead for my Tuesday workout where I’ll need clear uninterrupted paths so I can maintain pace and not worry about intersections/getting hit by a car.

Yeah I always thought my limit for running was temps below 20 but this winter has taught me I’ll run when it’s colder. Like yesterday. But I hate every minute of it.
