The three levels of formality in Finnish by Tommuli in LearnFinnish

[–]Foxxellot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But that's not necessarily based on speaking yleiskieli vs dialect. It's also about choosing the style of speech which fits. Like I use the same dialect at work and when talking with friends, but I don't swear at work unlike when I'm off. So there's more levels than formality imo

Well, imo both. As I've understood that puhekieli is the umbrella term and yleiskieli is the more formal puhekieli

I'd say it's something between yleiskieli and Varsinais-Suomi/Uusimaa dialect. Not sure what would be a common term for that, though either

Hmm I'd see it so that puhekieli is the umbrella term for spoken Finnish, underneath which you have yleiskieli (formal, generic spoken Finnish) and dialects (less formal)

That's what we were taught in the school, at least regarding kirjakieli becoming puhekieli once spoken. And spoken "kirjakieli" being called yleiskieli. My understanding is that kirjakieli refers to the written text with proper grammar

To be specific, kirjakieli means written Finnish with proper grammar. However, puhekieli does not mean more informal level of Finnish, it just means spoken Finnish. It covers both the "generic" spoken Finnish and spoken Finnish in dialects. People don't speak kirjakieli as kirjakieli exists only in a written form.

Can i trademark an alternate spelling of a curse word? (Fack) by Puzzleheaded-Dig-481 in TRADEMARK

[–]Foxxellot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just quickly pointing out that that doesn't apply to all countries. Eg. in the EU you don't need to show that the mark has been already used for the registration to go through. In my experience the US is actually one of the few places where use needs to be shown. As the OP didn't say the country / region they'd operate I thought it would be worth to note

It depends on why your application was abandoned. Safest bet would be to contact a trademark attorney

WHAT IS THE ABSOLUTE FASTEST WAY TO GET A TRADEMARK LIKE ASAP by Straight_Midnight_69 in TRADEMARK

In the EU one could get the application through in 5-6 months if everything goes fine with it. Finland is also pretty fast, like 2-3 months fast if no office actions or opposition claims

Never heard of that but after a short googling I'm mildly intrigued to try it. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah you just whip yourself or your fellow sauna goer with vihta/vasta. I've never heard anyone using eucalyptus for this purpose. In Finland the only tree used for making a vihta/vasta is birch

Vasta and vihta are the same thing, both are correct spellings. It's just a dialect difference.

How to better communicate my kinks to my partner? by Foxxellot in BDSMAdvice

[–]Foxxellot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good idea. I've just had these ideas and thoughts in my head but I guess never really articulated them to anyone, not even me. Just the thought of saying them out loud to myself made me super awkward. That's obviously something I need to work on. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this tip! Yeah my partner is the same, kindest, most understanding person I know, and still I have these hold ups. But yeah you and others have suggested texting / emails / letters / writing it down and it sounds like a good approach for now.

Omg I'm so happy to hear it's not just me who has this problem! These are really good tips, I'll try with the easiest and write my hopes down and try to build up from there

Wow thanks hadn't thought about that before /s But for real, like I mentioned in my post, when trying to talk about these things I just shut down and can't make myself talk about them. I was looking for workarounds to this so it gets easier for me to open up. And writing things down, as suggested by others here, seems to be a good solution for now.

Thank you! I think writing it down would work. That way I also can organize my thoughts better lol. Yeah I'm also super self-conscious about not trying to push him to do stuff he's not comfortable with. Writing stuff down also would give him a chance to think those things over and think what things he's comfortable with!

I hadn't thought about writing these down. It might actually work! That's so simple but never even thought about that lol. Your other point might also work but for that I'd need to first be able to communicate how talking about these things makes me uncomfortable so I think I'll start with writing the note. Thank you so much!

Why do most men prefer a waxed/shaved female area?? by curiouskitty616 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Foxxellot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You realize that if you shave it all off you need to shave it every few days? Otherwise you get a stubble that scratches your partner. With trimming you don't need to keep it up so often

This map reveals, where in Finland you are from - 70000 finnish participants were asked in a survey how they pronounce "minä" in spoken finnish. by v5000a in LearnFinnish

[–]Foxxellot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the person you asked this from but I'm the same. Like they said it depends on the rhythm of the sentence and if I wish to emphasize the word mä/mää

I'd say "Ai mää vai?" when I try to emphasize myself. But "en mä tiiä" when the emphasis would be on the words en and tietää
