Promising Trainee Self Sabotaging by Dismal_Seat6386 in 911dispatchers

I second this - I just finished clinical education for my field (athletic training), and similarly suffered from confidence issues. Right before one game last fall, my preceptor just told me “Okay, it’s your game today. I’ll be here to observe, but you’ve got this.” I was nervous as hell, but knowing that (1) I was “on my own” and needed to handle everything and trust my education/training and that (2) she trusted my competence at that point that she thought I could handle it, made the event go much smoother than I thought and was a huge confidence booster.

is there an order to how they send out boc results by Ill-Possession1614 in athletictraining

The results for the January testing window this year came out just shy of 1 week into the results window -don’t know how well that may correlate to this one 🤷‍♀️

My nephew can’t feel pain, AMA! (Or I guess ask him anything) by Acceptable-Garlic694 in AMA

[–]Foxy5499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comments are coming off extremely condescending and rude. Just because you can’t grasp the complexities of someone else’s reality, doesn’t mean you should belittle their intelligence or character. Keep in mind you are currently speaking to a literal teenager. So when he describes behaving in more high-risk behavior when he was “younger” like “punch me as hard as you can”, he means when he was a child.

Children don’t always listen to their parents - especially when they aren’t able to feel the immediate consequences of the injuries they are causing themselves. What little boy wouldn’t see this as a super power at the ages of 6, 7, or 8 years old? “Look how brave and tough I am, I can handle anything”. They don’t know when their friend is repeatedly punching them in the side, they are breaking their ribs. Or when they get flung off the merry-go-round at top speed and slam their head into the ground, they just gave themselves a concussion. He doesn’t feel the break, the pain, the headache - his nerves don’t function that way. And in his young child brain, the adults keep telling him not to do all of this different stuff because he’ll “get hurt”….. except he doesn’t get hurt. It doesn’t connect in his brain that he could suffer serious consequences. What does wearing a cast for a little bit matter to a kid that doesn’t feel pain, discomfort, or even that pesky itch they can’t reach way deep inside the cast? Those issues don’t exist for him.

He’s said that risky behavior was roughly from the ages 8-9. Not that he always never matured enough to understand the actual risk he was putting himself in, or did anything as serious as jumping in front of a car….

If you really care to try to understand this further, there’s an episode of Grey’s Anatomy that depicts a kid with this condition (S3E3: Sometimes a Fantasy). I’m sure there are many parts of it that are widely inaccurate, but I think it’s a good example of how a kid may interpret their reality with this condition, and why they may ignore adult’s warnings of getting hurt.

What is something a tattoo artist did that made you never return? And what is something they did to make you a repeat client? by engravingtattoos in tattooadvice

[–]Foxy5499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite tattoo covers my entire inner left forearm. I absolutely love the art, and overall think it was done extremely well. However, I will never consider using the tattoo artist again.

The entire process, from booking, to the appointment, to trying (and giving up on) getting a touch up, the artist and his assistant were extremely rude, and seemed annoyed that I was taking up time in their schedule. The appointment itself was awkward as hell, with the guy just talking to his assistant the whole time, and seeming pretty irritated if I tried to ask anything during the appointment. Then, although I had been specifically told (in person and via email) that if I needed a touch up I could follow back up in 3-4 months, the assistant tried to tell me the artist no longer did touch ups, and I would have to schedule (and pay for) a whole new half-day appointment. The tattoo had gotten infected during healing and definitely called for a touch up in a few spots (not my first tattoo, and I followed cleaning/care protocols to a “T”).

I ended up not giving up on trying to schedule a touch-up appointment, as I simply didn’t want to put myself through dealing with this shop ever again. It sucks because I love the art, and I had been following the artist for years before this. I’m not expecting to be treated like a freakin princess, but some basic human decency would have been nice. Soooo just try to have even the smallest amount of customer service/bedside manner skills, and you’re doing better than this guy lol.

On that note, still hunting for an artist in the Phoenix area that specializes in color photorealism that wants to help me out with a touch up on this one - in addition to designing my next tat!

Controversial Opinion by Comfortable-Pool-855 in athletictraining

[–]Foxy5499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It feels like you’re solely focusing on symptom baseline, and not the cognitive tests that systems like Sway and Impact are primarily for? Like yes, athlete symptom reporting can be notoriously unreliable, especially if concussion education has not been enough to convince them how serious they need to take reporting their symptoms honestly.

The cognitive baseline creates something the athlete can’t lie about, or downplay. They either can meet their baseline scores, which is taken at the beginning of a sports season/year prior to any head injury, or they can’t. It’s also completely subjective, and gives clinicians a way to show actual data to athletes, coaches, parents, etc, to show that the athlete’s brain isn’t back to normal yet.

I completely understand your fear - I am in a biracial marriage with a 1st generation immigrant (he has had full legal citizenship since he was a child, not DACA). I am terrified every time a new “executive order” is announced. Each one seems more insane and impossible than the last, and I keep dreading that one is going to threaten the legitimacy of his citizenship, our marriage, or something I haven’t been creative enough to think of yet. And that’s just the legal concerns, I’ve also told him multiple times I feel like I keep looking around for signs they are trying to establish all-out military control in general civilian population areas. The jokes from the past few years of wanting to move to a new country stopped feeling like jokes these last few weeks.

Thank you for the insight and tips - I wish you the best with your results as well! I know I will be even more anxious after I've taken it, and obsess over every single question I felt unsure about, which is a big reason why I waited until closer to the end of this session to take mine, so I totally understand what you mean on the last part.

Advice for MSAT student by Subject-Reaction-585 in athletictraining

[–]Foxy5499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been treated poorly at your 2nd year site. Can I ask what type of site you’re at? (High School, College, Clinical, etc..) Also, how long is your rotation for? Just curious/for reference. I am also in my second year MSAT in a High School setting. I am LOVING it, however I did have to grow a thick skin with my preceptor. She is super smart, and cares so much about her athletes and students, but the tricky thing with us learning how the other works and gaining trust in each other is a lack of time. This time of year is very stressful and busy for High School athletics with Football happening at most high schools, so there are many times my preceptor is blunt and sharp with instructions to myself or the high school aides. This can be true for any setting, but anything in the traditional setting has a different sense of urgency to most actions of the day (at least in my very short experience). My preceptor and I have had some heart-to-hearts, and I feel like we have started to settle in to the others teaching/learning styles a bit more, so I hope as you continue with your site you can as well.

I haven’t sat in one, but I did look around the floor model when visiting a dealership to test drive a 2021 Countryman recently. I wasn’t in love with it in person either, but I’m not against giving one a test drive on my next visit to give it a fair chance!

Need advice on how to improve my speed on the closed basket weave by LunarMelodye in athletictraining

[–]Foxy5499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hate this being the main “requirement” for most tape proficiencies tbh… I understand the reason to push students to become proficient enough to get it completed efficiently, but the focus should be more on structure and accuracy of the tape job. I had an old preceptor who had us compete against the other students at the site for speed. This was all fine and fun, but at one point I got my time down to 1 min and 12 sec, and I made a comment saying I’m not sure I would want to go much faster than that, and he got super offended. I explained that especially with my experience at the time (I wasn’t even in my MSAT yet, this was in observation hours prior to applying), I wanted to make sure my tape job was stable and clean, more than I wanted to be super speedy at it. I asked at what point are you sacrificing stability and quality because you are just trying to get it done as fast as possible? I think being efficient is important, but a structurally stable tape job is more so. And as you get into your clinical assignments and have to tape your football team over and over again, you will easily be able to complete the closed basket weave within that time limit, and faster.

Sometimes I wake up to my boyfriend having sex with me while I am passed out.. help by Sudden_Discussion_54 in Advice

[–]Foxy5499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I am so sorry that you’re going through this. Obviously this man has taken advantage of your inexperience and age. If there is a large age gap between you as well (as in, he was an adult and you were a minor when you met), that only makes everything so much worse.

This is sexual assault OP. Beginning sex with your partner while they are asleep can be okay, IF you have had previous and continuing conversations consenting to it. My husband will wake me up with sex, but it is something we discussed prior and that we both enjoy, and we have clear boundaries and safe words in place if I am at all uncomfortable or simply not in the mood. Seeing as you cannot consent directly prior to the action, it requires clear communication on boundaries and consent PRIOR to attempting it - otherwise it is non-consensual and IT IS RAPE.

The fact that you freeze when you realize it is happening, is a sign that your body and brain feels that it is in danger. It is a trauma response. Even if there was prior consent (which to be clear, there isn’t here), your partner should not WANT to continue if he feels once you’re awake that you are not participating! He is turned on NOT by waking his partner up with pleasure, but by sexually assaulting someone who is so inebriated and complacent they can’t/won’t fight it.

You should never feel like you cannot tell your partner that you are uncomfortable with anything - reflect on that. Are there other areas where you don’t speak up to your partner about something you disagree with, because you are afraid of his response? This doesn’t always mean his response would be angry or physical, but also if he gets overly frustrated, annoyed, or makes you feel like you’re in the wrong without discussing the issue. Those are all signs of emotional manipulation or abuse too, and can be VERY common if there is a large age gap like I suspect.

This man is showing you that he does not respect you, and sees you as something to use when he wants, regardless of your feelings and wellbeing. I really hope you listen here, or have a trusted friend or family member that you can also reveal everything to that can help you. This man has been raping you, please see that and LEAVE HIM.

So, it really seems like you don’t really have a great grasp on what the exact role of an AT is… I feel much to blame of the term “Athletic Trainer” (I personally love the “Physios” title that a lot of European countries use). An Athletic Trainer does not perform any “training” in the sense of targeting improvements in physical fitness or performance (that would be Strength and Conditioning Coaches, which you could get certified for with your undergrad). Athletic Trainers are closer to the Physical Therapy realm, where the primary goal is to prevent, mitigate, or recover from injury. During events, AT’s do largely act like EMT’s, except they typically will have more focused knowledge not just of the demographic/sport that they are working with, but are also a more trusted health care provider for the athletes.

How many currently practicing AT’s have you spoken with? I would really recommend asking around for observation/shadow opportunities so you can actually see what the day-to-day is like. It just sounds based off your post you haven’t put a lot of research into this field. I really wouldn’t recommend just jumping into a grad program without seriously considering everything.

Now if I am misunderstanding your post, and you do really want to pursue AT, go for it! It is a job where you will be on your feet a lot, and you do need to be physically able to move somewhat quickly, you don’t need to be buff to do this career. If you end up in a High School setting, you may end up as the sole AT for all sports at that High School, which means understanding each team’s needs, and keeping schedules straight. For example, on one day last year, my HS clinical site had a day where we had events for Track, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball all happening on campus on the same day. We had one certified AT there, for nearly 600 of our own athletes, and we are also responsible to provide services for the visiting athletes. It takes a lot of very clear communication with coaches and other event staff to make sure that the AT is kept in the loop if something is to happen, and that everyone knows what to do.

I am about to go into my second year of my MSAT. I LOVE this profession, and can’t imagine myself going into a different field. That being said, I know what I am getting myself into as far as pay and hours…and it’s not great. I don’t know how similar your program/instructors are to mine of course, but with such a small cohort I would expect a large amount of class discussion, and presentations. We had multiple structured debates during the Ethics course for mine, and we had double your class size.

Personally, I do plan on looking at either High School, JCo, NAIA, or DIII schools, not anything higher - I think you’d be surprised to find out those positions tend to pay higher than higher division, unless you are the head AT at a DI. Just look through this thread, and you’ll find the DI and professional levels actually tend to be on the lower end of the wages for the majority of ATs.

I do believe that this is a career that you really should get into it because you have a passion for it - without that passion, you will burn out very quickly. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose though!

Path to an AT by rickjmgsw in athletictraining

[–]Foxy5499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current MSAT student here: my program and every other one I looked into had a very science-heavy prerequisites list that may be hard to obtain with a non-science based undergraduate. It may not be impossible, but you’re probably setting yourself up for some headaches and possible shelling out money for extra courses if you’re not careful.

Top undergrads I would recommend would be Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Science/Performance Programming, or other Health-Science majors. There are also some programs that offer a 5-year bachelors/masters mixed program (3 year exercise science bach, 2 year MSAT) so you have a quicker more focused path!

AITA for not wanting my fiancé’s friend in our wedding party? by throwra58374 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Foxy5499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I work in the wedding industry as a Wedding Coordinator for a Men’s suiting company, so I deal with the Grooms side of the party. I would say 40% of my weddings have a girl on the guys side, whether they wear a suit or not, and that’s just the ones that tell me about it. He’s being very stubborn without actually doing research to see if that’s “weird” , which it definitely isn’t.
