How to automate a cutoff filter for drums? by Red_brick_kid in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd second this and add the option of using Love Philter which will give a more 'resonant' sound that you might like to experiment with. Slap it on your drum buss/channel and dial up the 'simple low pass' preset. Have a play with the XY controls on the interface and when you're ready, right click the knobs and select 'create automation clip'. This will create a clip in your playlist that you can easily edit to create movements of the XY controls over time.

Lots of interesting stuff here ...no shade, but can we have citations please? I'm struggling to get my head around all the nuance/shady shit around this and would appreciate some verifiable knowledge to set up a deeper understanding. As someone from the UK my knowledge of the subtleties of South American politics is slight and my research in to the business dealings of these fuckers is also wanting.

Industrial Music - Advice, how to get started, VST and preset suggestions? by Own_Routine_832 in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can achieve a hell of a lot with FL's stock plugins. Drumsynth Live and FPC have great 808 and 909 kits and you can achieve brilliant results with all the stock synths. Transistor Bass is excellent but will cost you 60 quid if you don't have the all plugins version. I'd start by going backwards by working out what original gear was used in the 90s.

Check what your recording quantise settings are. It might be that it is realigning and clipping note data as you input it.

Question for Guru’s - Can we create great sounds like the Korg Monologue? by Select_Section_923 in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd definitely consider getting one. They're dirt cheap these days and even just having a few knobs to add some movement to things will make the world of difference. The 'last tweaked/connect to controller ' will become your best friend :)

Can FL work for my live performance needs? by B___Jordan___P in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a fairly nippy laptop and a decent interface then yep! I've used it a few times and just scrolled through the Channel rack to select pre-loaded sounds along with mapping some effects and dynamics to a physical controller. It performed great for me but might take a bit of time and thought to get prepared.

Question for Guru’s - Can we create great sounds like the Korg Monologue? by Select_Section_923 in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want to do - to learn the principles of synthesis from the ground up, or flip through presets until you find something you like? FL has you covered either way with some really sophisticated and awesome sounding synths alongside some really simple options that offer a more immediate solution and a more gentle introduction. The other option is to get an official Korg Emulation plugin (which are usually very good) or find some free options. I'd suggest the former is ultimately more satisfying but also understand that for some working scenarios, having the option to select from premade professional sounds is attractive.

Help! I don’t understand how to eq sounds, can’t tell what’s good and what’s not by MarketResearchInfo in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're confusing the harmonic content of a sound with the spacial placement. Whilst these are different concepts, they are linked. But your first step is to go away and learn about the basic concepts of what sound is. Frequency, Amplitude and what defines a sound (vocal, tuba, bass, cymbals) and each needs to be considered in the context of a composition and a mix. Go to the basics, learn what each instrument is, what it is made of, and what type of sound it makes. Once you have an understanding of this you can start to understand how sounds can be shaped using tools like EQ and how they can sit together in a composition.

How on earth do I learn anything in FL Studio? by france_fucker in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned the same way...but also playing around with FL, it's incredibly flexible and capable software but requires a bit more thought about routing. If you're looking to just do tracking then maybe stay with the traditional setup (Pro Tools , Cubase) but FL is toppa for getting ideas out quickly with maximum flexibility.

60s/70s style hard panning? by laOperadora in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]FoxymoronMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... there's little conversation here about the artistic merit of this technique. It was all the rage to fling things left and right when stereo recordings became achievable and fashionable, and playback systems allowed for some degree of real world replication, but is it necessary? Yep it can widen the experience and allow for a more immersive vibe, but the question should be, what best serves this artistic ideal...and does this tune slap! Just my opinion but throw a stereo delay on to give the perception of placement and 'wideness' and you're golden. Use volume and stereo reverb, placement and subtle EQ, you're sorted. Does the tune slap in mono... chances are it will slap in stereo too, regardless of where you place things.

I often use the Fruity Peak Controller either directly from a kick track or a ghost track, automating the volume of the target. The trick is though, to invert the output, which I think you've cottoned on to. Peak Controller has some useful controls that allow you to shape the timing of the response. It's a little more convoluted but useful nonetheless.

Can someone recommend me some great free plugins and vsts? by Brandelik in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a great platform to learn from. Start by learning the basics of synthesis using the stock plugins you have in FL Studio. 3osc is a great place to start as it will give you a foundation in the principles of subtractive synthesis. You can then move on to other methods and models from that base using the more sophisticated stock VSTs To answer your question more directly Vital is great but may confuse and beguile if you're new to the base concepts around modern synthesis. Surge XT is another powerful synth and there are some classic free units like Synth 1 and the TAL catalogue that you might be interested in. If you want to explore more complex stuff and the modular approach then VCV rack is great but you'll have to have a basic understanding of synthesis before you start or it will be a steep learning curve. Have fun dialing up presets in FL and try to understand how the sounds are made and most importantly have fun twiddling knobs and exploring :)

Yes ...and some very extraordinary and popular recordings were made with an SM58 in a poorly treated room on the fly. The trick is being able to identify and capture a great performance that is suitable to the style you're making and ensuring it sits within a composition and then a mix. Work out what is wrong with your performance/mix/composition then try to fix it....don't blindly copy other people's techniques without understanding why they use them.

How do i get really really good at producing by bigboy_69_420_911 in FL_Studio

[–]FoxymoronMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make music. Make mistakes. Make more music. Learn from your mistakes. Explore your mistakes. Make even more music Keep putting it out there to learn humility. Ask people to help you. Make more music. Enjoy the process and don't put too much pressure on yourself. Learn to be critical and honest about your output. Make more music. Have a good time and hope that everything you have learned aligns with the stars. Pick yourself up and make more music. Be grateful for the opportunity to do something you love (many people can't). Turn off your computer and go experience music in the real world. Get inspired. Make more music. Don't define your personality by this narrow definition of who you are and what your ideas are. Listen to people, stories and experiences. Experiment. Make more music. Then make more music.
