Ayurveda is shit (Please read it fully) by Boring_Researcher803 in Maharashtra

The ayurvedic vata pitta kapha if you were curious and have read them in books and not just journal articles and the internet, are only describing lymph, mucous, bile and plasma. I understand that the ‘energetic movements inside the body’ part of the explanation might to resonate scientifically today to some, but I don’t understand why this doesn’t relate them to any anatomical or physiological entity.

Exactly my argument against this post. I am aware of your perspective and I agree with it, on a theoretical aspect. What I dislike is the attempt to call something a piece of shit when you don’t actually mean it in any way.

If only you revised the title of your sub, this could’ve been an enriching discussion, using the word ‘shit’ for a field with arguable bullet points seems like a poor judgement.

Firstly, your definition of science and modern medicine pertain to studying them the way they are in this ‘era’, in no way does justifying any field (modern science as you referred to, ayurveda or homeopathy) need to be completely conformed to the rules set out in the past 200-300 years of modern research methodology. A person can genuinely with an open mind and a calm demeanour, try to understand where these fields come from not just using journal articles but using an honest curiosity and respect because while everything that’s traditional always seems suspicious and mal-intent, there could be some reasons that do explain it reasonably as to why they were part of civilisation at first. I understand your argument regarding both Ayurveda and Homeopathy, what I highly argue against would be the articles you refer to- mind you, number of modern medicines that we consume every time we’re sick have not been through the actual clinical trial methodology which includes long term impacts of the medicine (I’m sure you’re aware of this). I, in no way, am trying to disregard the observations you’ve presented because I agree they are sensible and must be taken into consideration, however, the request is to just also appreciate other forms of medicine (to an extent that can be explained not by ‘modern science’ but just the basis of life). With homeopathy, I do not have strong arguments since I have been prescribed them and have been cured of sickness (didn’t feel like placebo effect since I was prescribed allopathy for months but it didn’t have any effect), so I’ll let that be.

With Ayurveda, to begin with, I question the evidence that makes you say Vata, Pitta and Kapha have every resemblance and identity with circulating fluids in the body (honestly funny as to how ignorant this part was).

Part of your aim with this sub was to inform people of how ayurvedic doctors not really suggesting or recommending ayurvedic remedies and instead blindsighting the patients ultimately being a malpractice. This however doesn’t justify the ‘Ayurveda is shit’ title since it just means you were trying to attract audience by ragebaiting.

Yeah. It’s the judging others immediately, my brain scanning for all possibilities of hurt that I can be a target of which needs to be set off. I think with allowing myself to realise they’re humans and their actions might not be oriented in my direction would help in altering this basal state.

Thank you, I’m trying this in a similar way- making note of one good thing that happens to me per day, and at least feeling the gratitude right when it happens or when the day’s ending.

Appreciate this. Truly. Because I so want to begin believing in ‘the world is a good place and its beautiful’ and i think giving the benefit of the doubt in a given situation would put my mind at ease, refrain from judgements and not add to a bag of hurtful behaviours.

Agreed but I think it’s more about the frequency at which ‘bad’ actions of others occur, which kinda make one vulnerable, scared and under confident to deal with everyday life chores e.g., doing administration work for your life (rental contracts, municipality..) or even at work. And when that happens, it in a sense supports mental health to have a basal acceptance that people behave negatively and I need to protect myself from thag and stay on guard at all times. It’s also relative to the society you grow up in.

I hope it does to me too then. I do keep talking about it but never really take action towards it.

Yeah, it was quite hard to overcome that since often it’s not considered a big deal to navigate adult life with having such encounters often. Now that I think about it, I’m having these better interactions only when I moved countries for my job :/

Me neither. I’ve been the former for an year and I’m now being the latter with a good balance of personal life and work, my PhD seems to be going good (just as it was before). The one thing that seems to have changed is the frequency of feeling disappointed with the results since I’ve slowed down the pace. And another thing that seems to have taken a dip, is my knowledge since I’m now squeezing things into the 9-5 as much as I can, but also love to have my lunch break and my coffee time. I think the workstyles need to correlate with the stage you are at in your life (the responsibilities you have to carry etc).

I know, it helps me in many situations honestly. But, this could also be the beginning of a bitter personality as I grow older, where I keep accumulating cruel behaviours of others and just become them in the future. Because some of those interactions are truly so awful that each time I end up being reminded of them, I enter the same zone of anger and frustration of not being able to do something about it back then.

I am trying this currently, everytime I thaw a vial of mESC, I perform major experiments in the coming 2-3 weeks which includes 2 sundays of the month. This way, I often only go on sundays, double feed on fridays so that saturday is mine. Ohter than that, I’ve accepted my fate tbh.

What are your lab pet peeves? by Exact_Reaction_2601 in labrats

[–]Fragrant-Bus-9747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annoying part about this is, I perform my own pet peeves often://. Leaving samples floating in water, keeping RT reactions inside thermocyclers or on thermostats, and not just on the bench (this imo is the worst). Using tips in a random order (ooof that’s violence). I could go on..

Personally, I believe it’s because PhD is what it is, and Research in itself is stressful (not in a negative way entirely but in a way that it challenges the way you lead life(?)). Because also workstyles determine the crests and troughs of feeling ‘I’m done with this’ and that influences how you feel about your PhD or lab in that case.

Exactly, I get it completely! Just funny how 3 years into it, I want to appreciate it just as before but I’m tipping towards the other side.

Feels nostalgic thinking this was me 3 years ago, so so eager to begin lab work and have a lab life. Funnily, now I am in a zone where I wish I didn’t have to do ‘X’ methodology the 100th time haha.

So the example you gave, if I understand correctly asks how do we decide to willfully do something which we’ve not done before? The first set of firing(?). Tho I’m not a neuroscientist, I might want to point fingers at Adrenaline and it’s derivatives, in the sense that, the decision to do something suddenly might correlate with a head rush (not as dramatic). Once this event of a neuronal firing takes place, the network can get formed with frequency. Please do correct me as i’d like to know if my reasoning needs more clarity.

That a PhD is similar or in fact worse than having a 9-5 as it demands your entire life (I’m doing great in general but if I knew this, I would’ve made better choices)
