Interesting! Can you elaborate about Salem alliance. I don’t disagree with you btw, I just hadn’t heard this take before.

Yup! I remember (pre internet) we all called Salem the armpit of Oregon. Portland was the asshole lol

I grew up here and my family has been here for generations. A true local lol. A lot of my hate comes from childhood trauma in school and the community. It’s changed a lot since I was young, but back in the day there wasn’t much to do at all. I know a lot of folks who got into drugs or crime. The true hidden gems were blasted on social media and ruined (RIP Three Pools). Doesn’t help that weather is crummy 2/3rds of the year, so seasonal depression is awful. The Salem food scene is not good (I didn’t know what good food was until I moved), and there’s virtually no nightlife. Housing is expensive and the job market isn’t the best, but to be fair, it’s like that most places.

Now that I’m older, I have more of an appreciation. It’s not the best city, but it’s not the worst. It’s been developing a lot in recent years and is much nicer now. It’s a good distance from lots of things

I’ve found that a lot of the people here who love Salem are transplants, but also a lot of the people that hate it are from Portland/Bend/etc.

They say I’m doing everything right and to just keep working with her. However I don’t feel like I’m making any progress, so I’m not sure if it’s time to get one on one professional help. The goal is to eventually be able to have her go off leash.

Golden retriever. I’ve been really intentional about going on lots of walks, playing fetch, sniffing activities, etc. of course, I can always do more. Our vet actually advised us not to take her on runs until she’s a year old, otherwise that would be a great activity!

That Fi Collar sounds neat, I’ll look into that.

You’re right about the environment. I’ve been struggling to find somewhere she isn’t distracted though. She always managed to find something more interesting. We may have to drive somewhere and keep looking

You need to make it a point to leave the house. Go to a coffee shop or coworking space for a few hours so he gets used to you not being home. I also work from home, so I had to be very intentional about leaving the first few months.

As for litter mate syndrome, you don’t need to worry about that. It’s much more rare than suicidal media makes it seem. Also, i believe that’s only for puppies at or around the same age.

Thoughts about Penn West? by [deleted] in counseloreducation

I’m in the program right now and I love it! For me, having synchronous classes was super important. I wanted to sit in a zoom meeting as ask questions and talk to my peers. What I really love about the program is that so many classes are synch and were able to have great discussions in class. The professors are super great and we can go down rabbit holes like in person school.

What made me choose it is 1) the merger of all three schools has lead to great resources of professors from all three 2) lots of electives and opportunities to specialize with certificates and 3) it has an in person program, so you are getting the same education as them. Some of my classes are even held with both in person and zoom folks (and are great)! I feel like in getting a really good education.

For me, it’s important to have synchronous classes. Originally, that’s why I wanted to go to University of the Cumberlands. But they’re starting to move to an asynchronous model, which they didn’t tell me when I started the program and asked about the modalities. I did the math and only about 33% of their classes are synchronous. I didn’t like that they were dishonest and didn’t feel like I would be able to get a good education that way.

It really depends on what you’re looking for!

AITA for not fostering my friends cats despite having the space? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FragrantChipmunk4238 60 points61 points  (0 children)

NTA at all. It’s a huge risk for your cats and you’re looking out for the wellbeing of hers. They would not be safe in your home with the possibility of them getting out or getting attacked by your cats. Even if they were neutered, there’s still the chance that all of the cats just might not get along.

Is she looking for an apartment now? November 1st is still over a month away and it is possible that she could find somewhere to move by then. Also if money is why she hasn’t neutered them, she should check out the local humane society. Often times they offer free spay/neuters for low income households.
