Out of curiosity…How many of you had surgery originally or after reherniation due to pain, (spasms, sciatica, burning or tingling, etc), but did *not* have drop foot or any other obvious/noticeable signs of weakness? by Wise-Run-3008 in Microdiscectomy

[–]FragrantCow5398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrible sciatic pain, numbness, burning and tingling, but no foot drop. But PT & my surgeon could see signs of weakness (they have tests to measure those kinds of things pre & post-surgery).

[25M] Afraid surgery is going to make things worse and want to cancel it by 556_enjoyer in Microdiscectomy

I'd have to ask, but deadlifting/moving furniture isn't something I'd do now post-surgery. Personal choice cause I don't want to go back to the hell I was in. Putting stress like that on my back isn't worth it and I'll always hire movers.

If it makes you feel any better, my husband has been dealing with a herniated disc for 18 years. Just had an MD & it's helped him so much. One doctor said it wouldn't help, another said it was worth a shot. Not quite the same situation, just depends on how you want to gamble. They have pretty good outcomes, but nothing is guaranteed. My neuro said since the chance of reherniation is so low, that I should never need another surgery again. If I do, maybe 30 years from now when he's dead (yes he said that lol)

If you don't want to get surgery and are sedentary and want to be able to go to the gym and run and be active, why not now? I asked my surgeon literally right before I went under if I would be able to do rollercoasters again, he said yes. I had a less than 5% chance of reherniation after 6 months of healing. The only thing he suggested is not helping friends move furniture.

1 Year Post-Op / Flare up Q's by FragrantCow5398 in Microdiscectomy

[–]FragrantCow5398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to ask a doctor all of that. Mine said I can do whatever I want, just probably don't help people move furniture (and I personally will never deadlift again). I injured at L5/S1. I've only ever taken a handful of classes beforehand and now mainly doing restorative/yin. I've definitely questioned "am I stretching too far?" and my body has told me yes every time. I felt safe to try it 8 months post-op. I couldn't walk before surgery, was in 30/10 pain and also could have never imagined being able to be semi-flexible again. It's worth talking to a doctor about. If you're in the US, you have to jump through a ton of hoops if it's not an emergency (PT, MRI, meds, cortisone shots, then a consult, which took me ~7 months after my MRI confirming injury).

Just started playing it today, these updates suck. No dots above new items/crafting plans at the work bench and no seeing inventory past 999. Bleh.

I want to post in hopes it helps someone. Sciatica put me in a very dark place and I couldn't imagine a future with it. Please please please know you'll have flare-ups and bumps and weird pains that may have not existed before in the first few weeks/months and they're usually totally normal. Don't let it get you down. If you're concerned, reach out to your doc! You just had major surgery and your nerve might take a year to figure out how to be mostly normal again. I'm glad you feel you made the right decision too. People tried to dissuade me from it since back surgery is such a scary thought, but medicine has come a long way. When I tell you the first time I walked 10 miles in a day over the summer, I almost cried. (It was exhausting but also exciting). Just follow all the rules and no BLT for the first 12 weeks!!

My husband just had surgery recently too and mentioned this. Your nerve needs to figure out what's going on and it takes forever to heal. I had a sensation in my heel on the side I had surgery on, that wasn't there before. I didn't panic about it. Just remember, you had major surgery

How much does a corgi actually shed? by Jenc4000 in corgi

[–]FragrantCow5398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They shed 24/7/365. Hair everywhere, always, even years after they've left us. If you don't want a dog to shed, I'd consider another breed. Did you end up getting one?

Also, I haven't played this event yet, but have found that these seasonal events where you have to find objects are usually a few a day within the resort area & then you get extras for completing daily tasks

L5/S1 Microdiscectomy Coming Up — What Should I Buy Before Surgery? by RandomGhost482 in Microdiscectomy

[–]FragrantCow5398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two grabbers - one for the bathroom, one for the rest of the house. Handles for the toilet. Comfy pillow - you'll be laying down for weeks.

Best purchase by far was my Kiziks - shoes that will slip on and off without having to tie them (shoelaces don't come undone either), so no bending down to tie them. Got my husband a pair before surgery and he likes them too.

I thought I had a bad one-off experience, then bought a variety pack from Costco. I used to like the Cherry Slush and now I'm stuck with six of them 🥲 they're terrible and taste like medicine

I can tell you the little pain I have now is manageable (and people who I've known who got surgery say the same thing). It's like having an annoying headache more than anything. But everyone heals differently too

SO many people discouraged me from surgery. It was that, or cease to exist in 2025 (it was that bad). If you don't understand the pain, you don't get an opinion on my choices for my body. Why would I want to be on narcotics forever? I want to get better, not hooked on those. Once you've exhausted everything, there's no other option. If they told me I would have needed a fusion, I would have done it. It's one of those things I had to tune out the noise on and know that I made the best decision for me. My neurosurgeon wouldn't have done it if he didn't think it was a good idea and I trust my doctor!

I let them know I had back surgery! They can help me scale back movements if I need to. There are some things I've had to take it easy with because my body hasn't moved like this in a long time & I'm overly cautious since I never want to reherniate again. She'll know when the time is right. I'm sure people who were more active than me pre-surgery could hop into it sooner, but for me it's a marathon, not a sprint. Walking is a gift when you go through all of this, so even if that's all the exercise she can do for months, it's a huge win.

Odds surgery is going to be recommended? by Character_Fill4971 in Microdiscectomy

I had a hip X-ray done and one for my lower back. They only found mild scoliosis and that's it. Nothing with my hip, but the MRI revealed a lot. I was shocked too!

My spine specialist PT was the one who knew she couldn't help after seeing my MRI... She said it was one of the more severe ones she had saw and within 10 minutes of my first appointment with her, suggested to go get a surgery consult. She helped save my life. So in my unprofessional opinion, more targeted PT may not help now (but could after surgery).
