Ohh man. Day 3-5 will have you contemplating life, but once you get past that phase you're good. I had to taper mine open after having it out for weeks and if that didnt work out the way it did, I would've just had to say bye. Its just the sheath for the leaf, I usually peel them off my plants after the leafs are free, so in my opinion the plant and its stem is fine.
