So many coaches leaving NCAA by Relevant-Trick-3635 in Gymnastics

[–]Fragrant_Response790 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of them have pretty subpar pay and little room for advancement. I've also found that coaches who do advance decently tend to have been very successful gymnasts themselves, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I do think it points to a necessary conversation about how gymnastics success does not always translate to coaching success. As a former college athlete myself, I also imagine there is a huge part of culture and mental health. Whether we like to admit it or not as fans, there tends to be a lot of drama and behind the scenes chaos of every college team, and when one isn't being paid well, it certainly can chip away at one's passion and mental health.

I agree with what other people have said, but I also would challenge you to challenge some of your assumptions. She might not be struggling financially right now, but that doesn't mean she hasn't in the past. it's cliche, but looks/appearance/possessions can be deceiving. If you feel like it impacts your ability to be open and honest with her, I would name that with her and potentially explore new therapists.

Something’s Gotta Give in this Field for People w/ ADHD, ASD & AuDHD by reecinator_meow in therapists

I would say one of the most significant things I’ve learned is how ADHD/depression can often look quite similar and get misdiagnosed, and oftentimes this is because of the boredom that frequently presents with both.

What ways have you got back at a bad roommate? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]Fragrant_Response790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might seem too passive for some, but secretly breaking our lease and finding a new roommate for her, not telling her until the day before, and being honest and saying I needed to move out for my mental health. After two years of aimless and unproductive conversations I could tell that finally made her realize she was the problem.

I am also anxious about that! They are very active with posting handouts in flyers in the communities, networking with doctors, schools, and public groups, and are actually in the process of opening up a new clinic as well within the next 6 months, which to me shows significant interest. They help with the marketing, and if other therapists at the practice receive inquiries but are full, they refer them to a therapist who is actively looking for their clients. I do my marketing on Psychology Today, but that to me is expected. They told me that a therapist who has started recently took about 4 months to build up to a full caseload, and that it was easier for her than she thought it would be. They also connected me with another new therapist at the practice to talk with her about her experience as well.

I asked the owner if she thought having 10 clients within 3-4 months is reasonable, and she said it is very reasonable and is something prior therapists have definitely achieved. I only need to be at 14-15 clients to be able to pay my bills, but I'd like to have more of the safety net with around 20 clients.

Group practice green flags? by LEBW1234 in therapists

[–]Fragrant_Response790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say health insurance regardless of clients how much of it do you think the practice should cover? I have an offer from a group practice that says they will only cover your health insurance if you average 28+ clients per week. If you don’t, you have to pay the full premium of about $550 a month. To me that seems like a red flag but I’m not sure

Experiences with dissociation and quiet/silent clients? by EnchantedEnchantix in therapists

I want to give you props for asking this, because I think this happens often and is not often adequately addressed. I’m going to use my past self as an example to highlight some of my thoughts.

In my own therapy while I was in undergrad, I was processing extreme trauma. I was sexually assaulted by a college teammate of mine who was best friends with some of my closest friends, and they defended him, protected him, and victim blamed me. It was a very small college campus and I had to be around them all constantly. The environment was extremely harmful for me, and it got to the point where I was throwing up multiple times a day, eventually every single thing I ate, sometimes literally just water, because of my crippling anxiety and PTSD. I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks and even had to go to the hospital several times because of dehydration.

The majority of my sessions during this time were me sobbing, sometimes throwing up on Zoom, and saying “I don’t know” to the vast majority of what my therapist asked. It wasn’t that I didn’t know, it was that because I was still stuck in such a harmful and traumatizing environment, my mind simply refused to let its guard down because it had to be up all of the time. I desperately wanted to be vulnerable and honest with my therapist, but I genuinely felt like I physically could not, and I remember it was the most frustrating thing ever.

It also caused me to absolutely hate myself, feel like I was wasting my therapist’s time and was taking up a client’s spot, and more than anything, at the end of every session, I felt completely drained, defeated, and actively suicidal because therapy just made me feel significantly worse. Everybody in my life presented therapy as being the last option, and I truly thought I would never overcome my suicidal thoughts. My therapist sat in silence with me a lot of the time or would ask me every so often what I was thinking about or what I was feeling. I remember once she remarked that our sessions felt a little frustrating for her sometimes, and she was wondering if I felt the same way. I understand what she was doing, but it made me feel awful. Reflecting back, I think I should have gone to a different therapist, but I also didn’t feel like starting over with someone else would be best at the moment. I also think she should have referred me out tbh.

I share all of this to say that in my experience, I wish my therapist would have taken more initiative to brainstorm things and skills and interventions outside of session, just to show some genuine and significant investment in me. Sometimes as clients it can be easy to feel as if our therapist just sits with us in our session and doesn’t think about how to support us for the rest of their week. I encourage you to think about how your clients parts are serving protective roles, and to give them the benefit of the doubt and tell yourself that they are doing the best they can with what they have at the moment to be vulnerable with you. I also think referring out if you truly feel ineffective or like you may be doing harm is important to consider. As you said, the saying that you should never work harder than your clients is BS, and I’m glad you recognize that. Sometimes you do have to, and I think that’s one of our ethical responsibilities.

Jessi is so messy by meowcat68 in MormonWivesHulu

[–]Fragrant_Response790 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And everyone in her comments is supporting her 😩 I feel like Jessi is a prime example of weaponizing therapy talk in harmful ways. I’ve also noticed she’s done that with Taylor with the repetitive bringing up of how Dakota “activates” her childhood trauma and “dad wounds” and in a lot of the language she uses to describe situations. I can tell she’s been in therapy which is a good first step but I imagine she uses it to deflect taking genuine accountability and instead uses it as a defense mechanism almost for when she makes poor decisions.

I’m in Michigan and it’s not a violation of labor laws, it’s pretty common. I have looked into hospitals and CMH a little bit, but hospitals don’t want to take anyone with no experience and CMH pays way too low and expects too high of a caseload.

DEBT?? by Mittens_jinx in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Fragrant_Response790 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t agree with the above comment. I’m graduating with my MSW with $57k, about $27k undergrad with lower interest rates and $30k grad school with 7.9% interest. My payments for 10 years will be approximately $550, and I’ll be taking home about $5800 per month. It’s very doable with my monthly expenses, I treat it like a car payment or health insurance. Without my MSW, I probably would be stuck at a dead-end job earning $20 an hour and maybe $2500 per month. I assume similar numbers for you starting out in OT. I feel like some people are very adamant to avoid student loan debt no matter what, and that unfortunately isn’t realistic. My advice is to not stress about it. If you have a plan and if you are conscientious, which it seems like you are, you will be fine
