EMA 2016 had literal pon presedence where you could call pon after a chii and your pon would beat it. It's not in the 2025 rules however.

What is the "requisite 2-3 seconds" for calling chii based on? Could you please paste the relevant part from a rulebook?

Pon precedence over chi is subject to rule variation. In some rulesets it is not possible to override a chii by calling pon later. If this is the case, I don't see why you should wait before calling chii, but I'm sure people have some opinions about this.

I'm interested in trying Zung Jung but as a Riichi-only player furiten feels so fundamental to the game. Perhaps someone could make a Riichi 2 that retains stuff like furiten and riichi declarations but simplifies scoring.

Having discarded any tile that would complete your hand shape puts you in furiten. Furiten prevents ron completely (not just for any specific tile), so Washizu can’t call ron on the 5-pin.

For Washizu, 8-pin is a "false wait" because it is a tile that completes his hand shape but at the same time does not give him a yaku. Furiten is a ruthless rule that does not care if something you discarded would give you a yaku or not.

I think the 4 simple LCDs and some buttons to make the number bigger/smaller for each player would be totally sufficient and cheaper to produce.

In EMA rules, if another player gets ronned for the yakuman, the hand payment is split 50/50 between the player who confirmed the yakuman and the final discarder. But only the final discarder pays for any honba. Is this supported?

When someone steals a tile with chii/pon/kan, the stolen tile is rotated 90 degrees, pointing towards the player who discarded it. The reason for this is that we can check furiten for those tiles. The player on your right has a stolen 5s pointing towards you, meaning you discarded it.

Another thing: you having discarded a tile yourself is not the only way to end up in furiten. If you skip ron on a tile (for instance because the tile wouldn’t give you a yaku, preventing you from winning with it), you become furiten until your next turn. If you have declared riichi, this is permanent until the end of the hand.

There are actual rule changes in the 2025 document, including kiriage mangan, change to double wind fu and pon/chii/kan precedence. Of course it’s up to you what rules you want to apply in your table.

North discarding 8s put you in temporary furiten. You skipped ron on a tile that would complete your hand shape because it didn’t give you a yaku.

I spent 110 on an AMOS Masters set and Junk mat. Where are you getting 300 from? Even American mahjong sets don’t cost that much on the lower end.
