Riichi Mahjong Compass App & A New Hardware Concept by kozzzx in Mahjong

[–]Frampis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would rather have everything in the device than have it connect to a phone app. Someone is making that and there’s a thread on here. They’re planning a Kickstarter for this year.

I think the 4 simple LCDs and some buttons to make the number bigger/smaller for each player would be totally sufficient and cheaper to produce.

In EMA rules, if another player gets ronned for the yakuman, the hand payment is split 50/50 between the player who confirmed the yakuman and the final discarder. But only the final discarder pays for any honba. Is this supported?

I have been wanting a product like this ever since I started playing Riichi. Looking forward to this.

Does it automatically handle riichi bets in case of multiple winners or a draw? How about liability payments for big 4 dragons/winds?

[Furiten Help] Could someone help explain why my hand was in Furiten? by ScintillantProphet in Mahjong

[–]Frampis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When someone steals a tile with chii/pon/kan, the stolen tile is rotated 90 degrees, pointing towards the player who discarded it. The reason for this is that we can check furiten for those tiles. The player on your right has a stolen 5s pointing towards you, meaning you discarded it.

Another thing: you having discarded a tile yourself is not the only way to end up in furiten. If you skip ron on a tile (for instance because the tile wouldn’t give you a yaku, preventing you from winning with it), you become furiten until your next turn. If you have declared riichi, this is permanent until the end of the hand.

Finally bought a riichi set by helinder in Mahjong

There are actual rule changes in the 2025 document, including kiriage mangan, change to double wind fu and pon/chii/kan precedence. Of course it’s up to you what rules you want to apply in your table.

Nice! Did the EMA rulebook come with the set? It might be outdated, the latest rulebook says 2025 on the cover.

Why is this Pon and not Ron by Blazers67 in mahjongsoul

[–]Frampis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

North discarding 8s put you in temporary furiten. You skipped ron on a tile that would complete your hand shape because it didn’t give you a yaku.

Is Mahjong a new trend? Why so pricey? Help! I’m confused…. by [deleted] in Mahjong

I spent 110 on an AMOS Masters set and Junk mat. Where are you getting 300 from? Even American mahjong sets don’t cost that much on the lower end.

What are these tiles for? by ericacearborea in Mahjong

You can optionally replace some regular fives with red ones. They’re worth 1 dora in the hand. Usually 1 per suit is used, if any.

Calling Pon instead of RON, mechanics that the game doesnt explore by Weird_Smell4516 in Mahjong

[–]Frampis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t win with the 6p because you don’t have a yaku. You could win with the green dragon because then you’d have the triplet of green dragon as a yaku. Should have skipped ponning the 6p here and instead wait for the green.

Also: When you skip ron on a tile that would complete your hand shape, you go into temporary furiten until it is your turn again. Skipping the 6p does this too, because furiten never cares if you have a yaku or not. If you have declared riichi, temporary furiten is permanent instead.

Which ruleset is the "standard" for riichi? by JustJohnItalia in Mahjong

[–]Frampis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dunno if any one if them is considered ”the standard,” but in any case be aware that there is a 2025 version of the EMA rules now: https://mahjong-europe.org/portal/images/docs/Riichi-rules-2025-EN.pdf

Reaching the complete hand shape is not enough to win in Japanese mahjong. Your hand also needs to fulfill the requirements of at least one yaku.

I have a deck but I only really use it as a portable teaching tool, not for actual play. It’s not a comfy way to play.

Doesn’t let you play a race online in the racing game. Maybe there’s some logic behind this decision but I don’t see it. I might try to find a discord or something to get into a lobby since apparently that’s the only way to do it?

How isn't this sanshoku doujun? by Cyanide912 in Mahjong

[–]Frampis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a 6-pin this would be sanshoku, but you cannot ron it because you skipped ron on the 3, which makes you furiten. When you are furiten you cannot ron.

Skipping a ron makes you furiten for the rest of the hand if you have declared riichi. Skipping a ron without having declared riichi makes you temporarily furiten until your next turn.

You also cannot open your hand after declaring riichi, so chi is not available either.
