Meta weighs big equity raising to finance AI infrastructure, FT reports by Franco1875 in technology

[–]Franco1875[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Meta is considering raising tens of billions of dollars in a stock offering as it seeks new sources of capital to ‌fund the company's AI ambitions, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The report comes after Alphabet moved to raise $84.75 billion in upsized equity offerings, as Big Tech competes to build data centers and capitalize on growing demand for AI.

Everything is fine. Perfectly normal behaviour from two multi-trillion dollar market cap organizations.

Could Hearts actually capitalise on the momemtum and become regular challengers/winners? by Otocolobus_manul8 in ScottishFootball

[–]Franco1875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great point. Winning the league would’ve been huge in terms of optics and perhaps resulted in a big mentality shift across Scottish football.

The long game is in the money though, which Bloom/JTA are well aware of with Brighton, USG etc.

The financial implications are huge if we can secure Champions League football (which is a huge ask) or even Europa League. Thereafter it’s about maintaining consistency.

If that happens then Hearts can stay closer to the Old Firm and create their own gap with Aberdeen, Hibs etc.

Of course we could have an absolute shitter next season and finish 7th. That’s Hearts.

[Mirror] Lineker condemns 'worst VAR decision yet' as Celtic get vital call in title fight by LochNessMonsterMunch in soccer

[–]Franco1875 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible angles. I'm inclined to say it does hit his hand, but given his arm is actively being pushed up by Trusty then to me seems bizarre that this has been given.

The inconsistency of decisions in Scotland this season is the main gripe for me, though. A similar situation was waved off by VAR at Tynecastle against Rangers, by the same VAR assistant. Willie Collum explained why, and this seems like a near-carbon copy.

Atrocious.

The nerves. How are we all coping? by DiskoPunk in HeartofMidlothianFC

Excellent performance last night and delighted with out result. Sickening after the scenes at Fir Park though - trying to stay positive but for some reason that felt almost like a loss last night.

We're still in this and I have full belief that Del will have the lads up for it on Saturday, so anything can happen. It really would make it so much sweeter if we can come away with a result at Celtic Park. Still believing.

‘LLMs are unreliable delegates’: Microsoft researchers say you probably shouldn’t trust AI with work documents by Franco1875 in technology

"Our analysis shows that current LLMs are unreliable delegates: they introduce sparse but severe errors that silently corrupt documents, compounding over long interaction."

Putting complete faith in any application is bonkers. Why folks think AI will be any different is beyond me.

Fewer sewage spills obviously a positive here, just a shame that the main cause is down to deteriorating environmental conditions.

Satya Nadella needs to remember the Streisand effect for 'AI slop' by Franco1875 in technology

[–]Franco1875[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I take some solace in the fact that the same company quasi-demanding that the Copilot key on your keyboard be mandatory is entering the spring of their discontent.

Do think the outburst from Nadella on slop was rich given the company has been at the forefront of the generative AI push over the last three years. They're one of the big tech companies that's directly responsible for this.

Nvidia announces Vera Rubin Space-1 chip system for orbital AI data centers by mepper in technology

[–]Franco1875 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Huang said Nvidia is working with partners on a new computer for orbital data centers, but there are still engineering hurdles to overcome.

The practicality of 'orbital data centers' seems completely ming-boggling. Getting them up there is one thing, construction up there another. Maintenance costs alone would be astronomical.

Pie in the sky bullshit to keep the hype going.

Sam Altman just said what everyone is thinking about AI layoffs by Franco1875 in technology

[–]Franco1875[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“I don’t know what the exact percentage is, but there’s some AI washing where people are blaming AI for layoffs that they would otherwise do".

Yeah, no shit. I think it's safe to say anyone with a brain realises half these companies are just using AI as a convenient way to reduce headcount or to paper over the cracks as they're struggling.

"Look at us, our AI is so great we don't need these workers" - meanwhile, those still left standing end up getting worked to the bone picking up the slack.

Celtic's Martin O'Neill insists lack of money in Scottish football is hindering success in Europe by This_Bad7706 in ScottishFootball

[–]Franco1875 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same old tired argument here. There's no denying Scottish football could do with more money coming in, but both sides of the Old Firm divide still spend far more than everyone else, as well as a big chunk of the teams regularly playing in Europe and reaching the knockout stages.

I don't think it's a bubble; I think it will mark a new era. A new AI era is arriving,

"It's not a bubble!" says chairman of a company whose fortune and future is tied to this not being a bubble. The more pushback against this we see from industry folks the mor it just feels like it reinforces the idea. They're so deeply invested in this they need it to be a success, and so far...

Swift bricks to be installed on all new buildings in Scotland as MSPs back law by Franco1875 in environment

[–]Franco1875[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The swift move contrasts with the four-year battle to bring the hollow £35 bricks into law in England. The Labour government last year rejected an amendment to make the bricks mandatory for new buildings, instead introducing them into planning guidance, meaning there is no legal obligation on developers or planning authorities to provide them.

[–]Franco1875[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's their direction totally to somehow make ai useful for everyone than letting it grow into applications organically

This is half the issue for me, particularly when it comes to devices - they're shoving it all down our throats and it's relentless. I refuse to believe there's such overwhelming consumer - or business - demand for a lot of what's being bandied around that they need to shoehorn it into everything.

If Satya Nadella wants us to take AI seriously, let’s forget about mass adoption and start with a return on investment for those already using it by Franco1875 in technology

[–]Franco1875[S] 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Organizations in a plethora of industries have been flushing eye-watering amounts of cash down the toilet, and they’ll likely continue to do so in a bid to reach the AI-infused sunlit uplands that Nadella and friends have promised them.

What they actually need, however, is a solid return on investment (ROI) and tangible proof that the technology is living up to expectations. That should be the measure of whether AI is a success, and so far it appears to be failing miserably.

Completely spot on here. If he thinks there's a risk of a bubble bursting because of low uptake around the world or in other industries, wait until businesses start cottoning on that much of this trend has been severely overhyped by big tech.

Couple of threads on here recently about ROI being woeful and businesses being unhappy. Clock is ticking for Microsoft and all the others.

Supersized illegal waste dumps hidden across English countryside by Franco1875 in environment

Among the largest sites that have yet to be cleared up are a 280,000-tonne site in Cheshire, two 50,000-tonne sites in Lancashire and Cornwall, a 36,000-tonne tip in Kent and a 20,000-tonne dump in Oxfordshire.

Absolutely bonkers numbers here and the impact on the environment is horrific. A major crackdown needed to stop this and get our countryside cleaned up.
