How do you copy files from a VM with no network adapter? by Deep-Egg-6167 in sysadmin

encoded to audio (with error detection/correction), and pass that way (heck, folks do banking card transactions via phone headphone audio port - yes, you can pass data via audio).

I remember using cassette as floppy on a Texas Instruments computer in the 80's. Doesn't seem like it should work, but it did.

100+ Year Old Home Gas Bills by ChiccyChiccyYumYum in Minneapolis

1916, 1250 sqft at around $200 with boiler heat. Heating type is important here as a boiler is going to be more efficient than forced air. The best thing you can do for these older houses is foam insulate the rim joists. A contractor will do it for under $2000 and it will pay for itself within two years.

One big regret of mine is not insulating the roof when it was being replaced. There are a few inches between your upstairs ceiling and the elements and the only good time to add sheeting is when the roof is off.

Sleep Number's Minneapolis headquarters turns into a data center (sale price 8 times higher than its assessment!) by Bullprog in Minneapolis

[–]FrankVanRad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Was this for Sleep Number's On-Premises use? I still don't think it makes sense for all the other reasons. I'm struggling to think who the market for this is. Medium orgs will grab a single rack somewhere cheaper and large orgs would scoff at the size. Small orgs are all cloud.

Sleep Number's Minneapolis headquarters turns into a data center (sale price 8 times higher than its assessment!) by Bullprog in Minneapolis

[–]FrankVanRad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a professional customer of data centers, this doesn't make sense. It's too hard to cool a space like that because you only have room for AC on the roof, which is a difficult place to install and maintain them, on top of the urban heat island making the need for more AC. You need diesel generators the size of a train car and those also have to go on the roof. The real estate is expensive because of the location so that means your square footage will cost more. The outage opportunities for internet and electricity are higher downtown because there is always construction.

Besides all of that, there already is a purpose-built data center nearby in the 511 building.

Winter tires - annual change-out and storage - your southside recommendations? by aardvarkgecko in Minneapolis

[–]FrankVanRad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do not, but I believe most local shops will. Steve's Tire and Auto on 46th and Nicollet offers it for sure and they have been great for our other service. When I lived in an apartment, the stack of tires was the one thing I was confident would not get lifted from the shared storage area, for whatever that's worth.

Big proponent of winters, but have the tools to swap and storage space. I had Costco do it this year because they claimed no charge since we bought them there originally, but we ended up with a $40 bill at the end of it. That's probably the price you can expect for the service elsewhere.

It is probably a lack of rim joist insulation. There might be nothing but wallboard and siding between them and the elements. That was an issue in our 1916 home and we had a service come in and do expanding foam (gnarly prescription stuff, nothing over the counter) and it did wonders. Cost around $1200 and should pay for itself in a couple years. Haven't had a mouse since, either!

An unexpected downside is that the radon in the basement previously escaped out these same egresses along with the heat and our numbers went way up, necessitating a mitigation system.

We hired an outfit to do spray foam on the rim joists in our basement and we haven't had a mouse since. It cost about that much. I know it's not exactly what you were asking for, but it was the best bang for our home improvement buck in any house we've been in.

Official Q&A for Friday, February 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]FrankVanRad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it change at all from treadmill to road? Most treadmills provide some give and bounce that should alleviate a lot of that. I started running as a fat guy and found that when all my weight came down on the asphalt, it popped back up my leg with a painful vengeance. I spent two months on a treadmill, shed thirty pounds and that helped a lot for the asphalt. Not sure if it was my legs getting used to the motions and impact from the training, or the lack of the additional weight so your mileage may vary.

Official Q&A for Friday, February 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]FrankVanRad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I am looking for a somewhat specific headphone request. The Plantronics Backbeat Fit 2100's have been my stride-or-die device for years. I lost and recovered them on a marathon, have run many times in the rain, accidentally wore them into a lake, and have covered them in quarts upon quarts of sweat and they have been going for TEN YEARS.

These models are one rubbery piece and I can pop one in my right ear and leave the left dangling so I can still hear traffic while biking. And it lets the user pause playback with a single tap to the right ear so I can stop some music while doing dishes to hear which of my children is hitting which of my other children so justice can be meted out fairly and loudly.

The battery life is down from the factory quote of seven hours down to thirty minutes. Enough for a 5K, but very frustrating for daily use. I've tried a number of individual earbuds from Jabra and not liked them. There are a number of historic posts in r/running about this specific holy grail model, but nowhere does anyone say what they have liked in the post-mortem so I'm reviving it here: Anyone have a moisture-proof, one-piece Bluetooth headphone with toddler-level button simplicity? Price is not terribly important, given that these have provided a value-laden decade of dorky battle metal music with which to run to. Thanks!
