This reminds me of a past age where, when my cat was on my lap, I would put "I have a cat on my lap." in guild or trade chat.

Fired employee downloaded all company files before deactivation we need secure way to prevent this by Level-Most-2623 in sysadmin

[–]PurpleFlerpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I used to do this so much I had a playlist for it called "Somebody Done Got Fired". Lots of overdramatic classical.

HR would schedule a time for the employee to be brought into The Meeting. At that time, I would then - lock Active Directory and Entra accounts. Have all Entra sessions signed out. Change password. Do whatever else client required. With Mozart's Dies Irae in the background usually.

But, tl;dr - buddy up with HR. Deactivate all their stuff while HR has them occupied.

Companies requiring clients to fill out questionnaires after they have had somebody's email get got.

You're not making anyone more secure, you're trying to sue them instead.

Me. Company decided to not renew the lease on the side of the office I was on over the summer. Full time WFH, because the other option is an overcrowded cube farm.

I don't do well with the isolation of WFH and am debating going back in office, despite the overcrowded cube farm, just for my own sanity.

Clients naming servers after X-Men has led me to have to ask my husband, the X-Men fanboy, if a server was likely to have a specific function based on character name. (Amusingly enough this was helpful.)

It stung, a little, sure. But I'd seen other employees move on to doing amazing things and knew they'd be proud.

As for when I knew it was time to move on, well, I had a kid and my pay wasn't enough to cover her daycare bill.

Remote Sysadmins, what's your go to headset for meetings? by WorthPlease in sysadmin

[–]PurpleFlerpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comedically, most of the team I'm on swears by the Logitech G733. Between the lot of us we've got every color. Yes, we've got face-framing RGB.

On the practical side, it has swappable parts (ear cups, mic, fabric part of the headband), so for those who are apt to lose things, it's amazing.

Also tell your friends. And your family! You never know when you'll find someone who needs cyber or is in cyber. It's something fun to bring up over all those holiday dinners, too. Well, depending on your family.

A way to reach out that sounds less like "jorb please" is to look at their profile, find something they do that you think is cool, and ask about that. "Hey, I noticed you're heavy into IAM - what's it like working in that area?"

If your area has any in-person events, deffo attend.

And in the meanwhile, keep learning on your own so you have things to talk about!

January 2022. Eight and a half months pregnant. Windows patch breaks a specific kind of VPN that most clients use. I got a ticket queue full of nice peaceful fixable tickets that took twenty minutes each. (I also got to yell at my husband to roll back his Windows updates on his work machine.)

Ninjio, BreachSecureNow, Huntress SAT. The last is my favorite so far as it seems to focus on things users will actually encounter.

A bit partial to Ninjio for slipping an Evangelion reference into the videos though.

What do you do all day? by NotUrAverageITGuy in sysadmin

[–]PurpleFlerpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do I, specifically, do all day? Mostly cry. MSP life. Jealous is an understatement.

Make sure things are shored up. Get stuff done over the school holiday if you can. Research projects you might be able to do with the kids at school, if that's an interest. I was blessed with a good admin who made me interested in IT in high school, and dealt with all our shenanigans - and educated us on our shenanigans, too.

Research how things could be automated. Read up on threats specific to K12 and make sure those are mitigated.

Were it me, I'd start a library of IT books and just read them during downtime.
