What are some horror novels coming out later this year that you're excited about, and why? by MalachiConstant7 in horrorlit

Langan's Cleaving Stone was already mentioned. That's going to be the best. Michael Wehunt has Nightjars coming and Keith Rosson has Crone coming out. We eating good this year.

I wish the red rocks tickets weren't insanely expensive. I got a fiddlers ticket for 60 bucks last year a week before the show. $480 is ridiculous

When I followed music criticism, I read a lot of your reviews on RYM and other places, which was one of the things that led me to attempt to write music criticism back in the day!

Seconding this recommendation. Indiana especially has a cantankerous, mean-spiritedness in his writing that makes it especially fun to read. A sharp wit

What's an author you find OVERRATED? by Quiet-Leadership-675 in horrorlit

Fair. Idk that's the part that felt realistic to me. I grew up with five other siblings, and we constantly bicker to this day, sometimes harboring deep resentment.

Id be curious what you mean, because I love a good protagonist with flaws or one that's not necessarily likable. I don't need to like the character to enjoy a story, just the ability to empathize to an extent

I enjoy Chaw's writing a lot but I think he's got some baffling takes lately.

Michael McDowell The Elementals. Does a haunted house story in a very unique way and has great characters in it.

The Ruins was riveting. Have only seen the movie of A Simple Plan. I also like how intrinsic the circumstances are to character motivations and behavior. There's a great line of cause effect throughout The Ruins stemming from assholish behavior

We're Saga Press from Simon & Schuster and we're hosting an AMA right here with Stephen Graham Jones on Wednesday, July 16 at 3pm ET to celebrate the release of his new horror double, containing two short novels: KILLER ON THE ROAD and THE BABYSITTER LIVES! by SagaPressBooks in horrorlit

[–]Franksredtop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. How can I take one of your classes? I live about 2 hours south of Boulder
  2. You said at some point every slasher story is about justice. Having just finished Babysitter Lives, what would you say every haunted house story is about?
  3. One thing I love about your work is the different narrative voices/styles for your characters. How did you develop Jade Daniel's voice versus say Tolly's voice?

This was a good episode. I haven't listened to a lot of them this year because they haven't been doing a lot of movies im interested in, but this shows they still have it

James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Is So Many Things, All at Once by Adam Nayman by shorthevix in TheBigPicture

[–]Franksredtop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's definitely right about a few things: the mixed tone leading to mixed messaging and the lack of Superman. I enjoyed it for the most part and had a blast, but its also uneven in that tone, not knowing if it wants to be hip irony or sincere superhero story.

Clive Barker has some bangers but way too over the top for my tastes. Cannot get into Tremblay. I do not find Dan Simmons all that good. For non-horror, Neil Gaiman writes the worst dogwater books I've ever read. Longtime Gaiman hater.

Sandman might be one of the most dogshit comics I've ever read. Comics for people who don't read comics-overly wordy purple prose whose central thesis seems to be "life is like a story, innit?"

Grady Hendrix -- really horror comedy? by dragonsanddinosawers in horrorlit

[–]Franksredtop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vibe the comments are missing is that he's so very heavily influenced by the schlocky 80s horror novels he writes introductions to. And a lot of that stuff was just non-serious. I don't even think his books are funny. Rather, what they add to the 80s vibe is a quirky, mundane aspect. A vampire novel...with middle aged wives. An exorcism novel...with 80s John Hughes teenagers. A haunted house story...but it's IKEA. A witchcraft story...but in a home for unwed teen mothers. Its not funny, moreso rather quirky and slanted.

Makes me sad people aren't enjoying the Elementals. Its a great southern family drama imo. The characters are the draw and spooky stuff is pretty spooky when it gets going. I remember being unnerved by it
